Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

200 mile roadtrip for the Mutt today.... she ran freakin awesome... it did throw an EGR code, but it never affected it's running... I'll do one early this week, it's one of the few things I hadn't touched/checked yet......

didn't have time to do the back springs this weekend, but it's on the plate for next weekend... She LOVES those long smooth parkway stretches, as opposed to the local/pothole buckboard/dumptruck ride it has...

hopefully it'll be in the exhaust shop tuesday, and inspection weds or thurs...

July 2 will see a nice toy order from Kert and ORD....

thats satisfaction huh?

glad to hear its doing so good after getting some miles under it....

I couldn't believe how well my 76 ran all the way home from Idaho....miles just instills confidence in the ride!
And I actually think my 2wd 76 rides better than my 4wd 99 2500.

it definitely still has some sketchy issues to deal with, but it's hangin in at this point... it goes at 8 AM to the Meineke guy, just having him put a hi-flow cat in and clean up the y-pipe joint... the muffler and other pipes in there are still very solid...

weds I'll be putting in the EGR... thurs it goes for the sniff test...

if by next monday, it's running and sounding good with new back springs and a good inspection sticker, I'll be a happy camper...

than phase 2, x-over and a 4" lift should be about 3 weeks off... I'll do some bilsteins at that point too...

I need to go thru the brakes at some point in the next month too, at least throw pads and shoes at it and clean it up, lube, etc.. they're not bad, but not great either..... I'm sure those drums haven't been off in a while! :haha:

after that it's on to the tubebed.... :woot:

sounds like a pretty ambitious plan...so the K5 is on hold til you get this where you want it then...seems like you mentioned "borrowing" a few parts from the K5?

I'm really anxious to see your vision of a tube bed :waytogo: my bed was actually a fun project, and although it was an interpretation of someone else's design, phase 2 will make it much more "mine". It's definitely cool to fab a purpose built bed :D from just one wheeling trip so far I'm already loving mine :pimp:

With the miles you are going to put on it unless a screaming deal comes along on a cummins ( which are out there) I would probably stay gas.

Though people forget there are other options out there.

6.2 with a turbo, 6.5 with a turbo gives you a great excuse to upgrade the AC stuff to a vintage air type system to clean up the firewall.

Though keeping with the theme of this truck if you were to go diesel I think it would have to be the 6.2 or 6.5 because those are just beyond a motor swap.

yup.. hardcore.. the K5 is total backburner for the next 6 months... I hope to be back playing with that come january... but yes, it will be missing some parts... the x-over and suspension.... but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna do rear links in that and 56's up front now anyway.

I am too!! :haha:

mine takes a few idea's here and there... but I know for a fact I haven't seen one out there that looks like what's in my head... whether that's good or bad, we're gonna find out! :haha:

it'll be a 496 LS base at some point down the road.... just need to come up with a good core... but it'll more than likely get that gen VI roller long block in the spring to tide me over...

for me, I have no desire to build the 6.2 or 6.5... it's a FINE choice for many, just not my cup of tea...

Are you talking a 496 as in the 8100 with the Cathedral style heads and LS style injection or an actual big cubes small block LS?

8.1...... coil packs, distributorless, yada....

I know you dont need me to tell you but.... That motor is the best work horse gasser ever built.

We have one in our 02 dually and with 190,000 miles it pulls like a mother****er.

You gonna run the 5 speed allison?

that 496 really is a pinacle of BBC design from the factory...so I'm thinking that Marine intake your seeking matches up with the cathedral ports of the 496?

no.. that plenum will fit the older 502's and 454's.... we're just starting to see the 6.0's and 8.1's a lot more in the last couple yrs... the marine industry is always a solid 10 yrs behind the car market usually...

I dont think the 4500 ever came behind that motor. Not that thats relevant just saying. I know they came with some sort of 5 speed.

I will however say that that allison 5 speed is a great trans. But if you want a stick I think you shouldnt let the fact that the allison came with the motor and is good persuade you away from going stick.

So I checked. I had a feeling it wasnt the nv4500 that came with the 8.1. It was a ZF 6 speed. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZF_S6-650_transmission)

The ZF is rated at 520ftlb input vs a nv4500 at 420ftlbs.

Obviously thats with no upgrades to the trans, although I dont know what kind of after market the ZF trans has. I think either one will live behind the 8.1 no problem simply because of the torque management. I mean for ****s sake that beast lays down 550hp and 720ftlbs of torque STOCK in full tune.

Good thread to chew on: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/186400-nv4500-zfs6-650-comparisions.html

good info..

I actually went to a marine school where a ZF guy taught some in one of the classes..

we see TONS of ZF stuff in boats... ZF may very well be the biggest gear supplier in the marine biz... merc, volvo, gas, dizzle, yada...
