Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

even with ones that are loud, and I ran a nasty Mallory comp pump and filter set up in the back of my Chevelle, and it was loud, like a Holley blue is...

it doesn't bother me, I'm an old hotrodder, I like that sh*t.. fock mang, I've got gauges on my hood... :haha: once ya light the motor off ya can't hear it anyway.....

that being said, I do have 40 psi inline marine pumps like the carter I posted earlier at work, that are pretty damn quite.. you'd have to have your window down to hear it I would say before starting..

Thats impressive with the carters. Still when you're driving to haul something from hours on end **** that external pump racket...

here's a merc one I had down on the stairs... iirc, this one is 35 lb's and is actually a Bosch not a Carter...

Shoot once your out on the road in an old Chevy it doesn't matter how quite the motor is, your not going to hear the fuel pump just from the wind noise.

That being said I like in tank pumps. I have only had 2 go out on me ever.

Had more external ( brand names like Holley and Carter) go out on me.

My crew is on its 3rd pump. It is getting annoying, changing pumps all the time.

what have you been running Kert? intank or inline? what kinda pressure does that EFI your running like to see?

we actually get damn good service life out of the marine ones, considering the environment they're in... every once in a blue moon we'll have one sh*t the bed...

Crew is carbeurated. It started with a carter, then to a holley black street pump and now a aeromotive. Carter was quiet, holley black was quiet, Aeromotive is not as quiet but not bad. All fed through a regulator running 7-8 psi. EDIT: there was also a holley red in there but I can't fault that it was shot when it was put on, managed to get me from nowhere nebraska to Utah and back.

Blazer is an exteral pump as well. Not much run time on it and I'm having a brain fart as to the brand. It's set at 43psi.

I thought the big advantage for in the tank was to keep it cool so it wouldn't fail so quickily:dunno:

that is generally the advantage... but not always... boats have found a way to make inline pumps work fine for 15+ yrs now...

One of my buddies car (turbo) I have helped build has a Weldon EFI pump, Intercooler water pump, motor water pump, and fan for the intercooler heat exchanger. It's the loudest car you'll ever hear when it's not running. The motor is relatively quiet... everything else, that's another story :-)

Not to derail this further, but are new boats still running external?

A lot of the competition ski /wake boats have gone in-tank in the last few years. They seem to work great, unless you run your tank on empty all the time.....then they don't last.

I've never even seen an intank pump on a boat... lot's of reasons why it's not a great idea.. but i also generally work on 25' and over boats..

some of the early efi packages had fuel canisters for the fuel pumps, in a recirculating efi system.. and there are a few merc packages running a newer version, but the majority of marine efi's are external only pumps...

Since you are taking boat questions .......:D, have they started going to LS based engines ? Just something I've wondered about, since so many seem to be GM based power plants I was curious if companies like Merc still "made" a 350 power plant or if they were now 5.3's or something :dunno:

yup, a few.. they tend to be much more popular in the smaller stuff, like 21 to 27' boats... ski boats, etc.......

we see the 8.1's fairly frequently in the bigger boats, tho I don't think technically that's an LS motor..

the marine biz is generally 10yrs behind cars... when they feel like it... :haha:

most of the motors I play with are 350's, 377's, 454's, 496's and 502's... sometimes the oddball 305, 383, or gasp, a 318! :haha:

Cool , just always wondered :waytogo:

318's :D make me smile, when we were kids (14 or so) 2 of my buddies and I would pull our cash and buy old beaters for field cars at the one guys farm. We had a late 70's dodge van w/a 318, we could not kill that thing, rolled it the first day we had it and cut the back off pick up style, countless hours spent a max possible rpms, no brakes, just jam it in reverse :doah:, didn't jump to well but man that was a tough one, don't think it ever had enough oil in it to reach more then the tip of the stick :haha:

yeah, what one market may be seeing, or even one marina vs another, may be worlds apart in clientele, boats and sizes, power packages, etc... Florida vs Joysey vs Cali, salt vs fresh....

tomorrow, I'l snap some work pics... just did a pair of 454's in one of these Formula's..

and also a new 377 in one of these..

oh, and since I'm giving a boat/work update... after probably 40 or 50 perfect running mills from Jasper, I finally got a bad one a couple weeks ago...

the first 377 for that 34 Sea Ray above ate it's bearings.... spun 5 g's fine for the first couple hrs, than started to lose oil pressure..... they made good, actually, that was a thurs, they got a new long block to me on monday.. installed it and had the boat out the door by friday..

Seeing a good number of 6.0's and 6.2's in watersports boats.

Ok, back to our scheduled program.

Paul, i'll send you a PM regarding your opinion on 25-30' formulas.....

Formula's are alright.. they certainly have their f*ckup's here and there... but they are generally a pretty heavy, solid boat with pretty good fit and finish... and good components for the most part... some of Formula's engineering here and there has been goofy.. but overall they build a pretty good boat.. sometimes a bit better than a sea Ray... and sometimes, not so much....

but that can be said for many manny's... at least someone has been trying at Formula to build a decent boat, unlike some companies that churn out cr@p to make $$$$$$.... coughcruiserscoughbaylinercough
