Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

no need for apologies, it all worked out and Mutt's becoming a fine DD'er... hopefully I can get started on the tubebed later this month... funny thing is, the rig garners a ton of attention daily from the masses thinking it's way cool, etc, and the first response from me apologetically is that the bed is temporary... :haha: wait till they see the tube one... :pimp:

and yeah, I was pretty confident the frame was gonna be fine.... street driven, bit thicker 1 ton, etc.... just got done putting the weld-in in and the Fush kit, painting the frame....

this morn...

60 smoothed, zinc'd and black...

even tho I have the socket setup and the full rebuild kits, I'm leaving the actual kingpin, they're immaculate..

tonight/tomorrow I start assembling it all.... hopefully I'll be doing the back on wed...

That thing didn't have the front shaft, so I knew the axle would be clean:thumbup:

What did you use to smooth the axle out? Your attention to detail is amazing, I can't believe what you can turn something into.

I run a big 4" heavy twist cup brush in my big 7" grinder over it.. gnarly, thing'll hurt ya if it catches ya! :haha:

than some smaller wire wheels in my die grinder, some grinding/smoothing with roloc discs, than I hit everything that can be hit thoroughly with a DA and 80 grit, than a bit by hand.... just zinc and paint... took a few hrs... the sanding is what makes it look good...

obviously it's not as good as blasting the bare housing than giving it the same sanding treatment, but it came out pretty damn good...

worked until about 9 tonight.. that's 12 hrs yesterday, about 14 today.. got the Fush's installed, springs and steering box tonight.... tomorrow I'll do the brake lines, hang the axle, x-over, get the rotors/hubs back together... hopefully finish the front...

That's being 100% thorough...I stopped at pressure washing, wire hand brush and scuff pads...
really makes a difference getting that wire wheel after it and then sanding...whew!
I just didn't have enough gusto to wire wheel it with it still on the truck...

That's a great looking axle and the pumpkin cover looks great! You even blacked your drain plug....

After spending a lot of time cleaning and painting these things...how long will they continue to look clean if driven normally? :dunno:

I've never owned a vehicle this clean to start with...I'm just wondering about street gunk and engine grime and how long before it creeps up and looks like it did before cleaning and painting...if it's 37 years I'm ok...:haha:

depends... glossy paint, what he said ^ waxed, cleans up ok, if ya stay on it and wash it regularly and rewax as needed... the prob lies in the satins and flats, generally your not waxing those finishes, so frequent washing/wiping down is the best option...

you should see the 60 housing for the K5, that thing is smooth as he!!... :eek1: I spent a couple days on that...

all casting flash removed, smoothed everything with rolocs, etc, like I did with the NP205...

Now that it has been a few weeks, have you changed your opinion of the single stage urethane Nason?

Yours looks as good as the bc/cc to me

I'm ok with it... like I said, it's no Glasurit, but I think it'll do fine...

anything with clear has a very different look to it than single stage... and tends to hold up MUCH better to oxidation... tho modern single stages have come a LONG way in UV protection from the older enamel days and such.. single stages use to chalk up pretty quick in those days...

probably wont finish the paint work until the spring at this point...

Whacky question...what would happen if you put clear coat over a single stage?

it's been done many, many times in various ways.... that's how we used to cheat/blend single stages back in the day in the collision shop... clear out your blend panel....

you can also add progressive amounts of clear to single stage as you go thru the coats to get an extra "deep" look to it.. finishing with straight clear...

well, didn't get as far today as I would have liked, but everything in the box area is all buttoned up, heep shaft installed (the old rag joint was HAMMERED! :eek1:) and I got the axle hung... tomorrow I'll do the hubs, arms, drag link, etc, and hopefully have her back on her KM2's....

after the front, the back will be easy peezy.... :haha:

maybe yes, maybe no.... :haha:

I'm running out of "in house" supplies... :doah: I've got maybe a 1/2 rattle can of black kicking around...

I'll see how the next few days go... being I have no wheels while Mutt is down, I may bike down to Autozone and pick some up... I'd love to strip the wheelwells while I have em out, prime and paint em... maybe sat/sun if I can get the suspension work done by friday...
