Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

It's different. It's old. Hell, it's a vintage survivor. It looks like it will roll over a Prius while hauling a ton of shingles without breaking a sweat and towing a boat trailer too boot.

I miss that about Big Ugly and The Blazer. People found them fascinating just because they existed and were different. A relic from a past when trucks were trucks and not cars with 4wd and a bed.

I've been eyeballing an international scout that a guy has down the street...hasn't moved in over 10 years...actually he has two...one is a parts truck....looks like one of these:

I've always liked those things...but it looks like too much work...

other than getting the exterior paint/ work done on Mutt, which I should get most done in July, hopefully fully painted by sept 1, the next big project for Mutt will more than likely be the custom back Kennel area in prep for Malachi's arrival...

tentative on next summer for the tubebed, but I have to see how the K5 progresses....

They're horrible rust traps. My buddy in Michigan has a '69 or so 800A like that. It's got parts of three 800A bodies in it and one was from Arizona and "was in good shape".

Neat stuff though. Boxed frame even back in the day.

that's exactly it.... I know people see that front clip, the grill, and associated hood paraphernalia , and go "wow, those where cool looking!"

There's never been a truck made that has the "stance" that a squarebody of any generation has....I look at mine and go "whoa boy...eazy..." :eek1:

funny thing is, that certainly isn't it's purpose.. it's meant to be amusing to me, that's all...

Yeah. Especially when I had Big Ugly, living in Northern Michigan where the road salt and 7 month winters ate these old trucks alive over a decade ago, I can't tell you how many times I had people want to talk to me about it. Just share stories, tell me about the one/couple/family full of them they had.

Hell, I'd even have Dodge and Ford guys tell me stories about their favorite trucks.

I'm not sad I sold mine off because my life now wouldn't be conducive to owning them or keeping them up. I was barely doing that before.
However I do miss owning them and the experience of it.

I'd still like to get a camera on a flatbed in front of mutt and have you chase the camera over some roads...get that distorted wide angle closeup of the duck while the engine is revving high...

Remake DUEL...but this time with Mutt and Dennis Weaver in a Prius....I'm sure we could get Dennis...he isn't doing much these days...:haha:

it was the absolute best frivolous purchase I've ever made..... :D

I get it from everybody, from old guys my age at the deli picking up a coffee, to little kids in the supermarket parking lot..."mom! look at the cool duck!!!" :haha:

For some reason.

I get people that honk, wave and give thumbs up to me too when I drive mine.

I even had a guy make an offer/try to buy it one Sunday driving down the road.

June 20th...Jaws 38th anniversary...not gonna have my rig back by then....

how long till you get back to yours?

Ryoken's Lab only showing re-runs this week? :dunno:

what's the latest on your tests?

funny, you brought this thread up tonight.. Mutt died today in the marina.. :doah: ignition sh*t the bed this afternoon, crappy/no spark.. gotta bike into work in the morn.. :woot::doah:

not sure if it's the module, coil or what.. gonna be pretty PO'd tho, that's all brand new MSD stuff about 14, 15 monthes ago...

hopefully i can get it back up and running in a day or so... been super reliable up to this point..

it annoys me.. I'm gonna fix it on company time, and probably charge any parts to them.. had to put a water pump in it saturday too.. free fuel since Sandy hasn't been worth the "start and stop 3,000 times a day, idling around the marina" abuse it has been going thru.. now my DD'er is down, I'm pissed, and my bosses are gonna know it...

first response from them? order a golf cart for me, gonna be 5 weeks... shoulda done that 3 yr's ago! they're gonna pay now.. fixing Mutt on THEIR time tomorrow...

My dad has has the same thing happen a few times as he owns 3 tbi trucks, fuel pump, ignition module, and the module inside the distributer

yeah, not a fuel issue.. the injectors are firing away... but it has super weak spark... it's been backfiring out the tbi the last few weeks too... hopefully i'll figure it out tomorrow, amidst the boat madness...

1 yr old MSD Blaster coil was the culprit....

new stiock one, runs like a scalded dog now... new cap/rotor too.. I was not happy with how much that Blaster was nuking the center electrode of the cap either, it was hammered with carbon buildup... whether that happened while it was sh*ttin the bed, or inherent, can't say...

kinda funny that it was failing over a month period or so.. usually coils just sh*t the bed...
