Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

it's certainly stronger than flat/strip steel of the same thickness and width...

Yep, I dont like angle or C channel if your gonna be pulling off it. It takes a while but eventually it deforms just needs a bit of bracing.

That is really what I was referring to. If you dont have that 4th leg you really gotta brace it up

this yr tax return bandsaw purchase? killing it already! love it, cut the 3/8 frames plates with it both directions... noice... :woot:

The build is looking great Paul, looks very functional and useful.

Saw something I thought I would mention since you got a bandsaw.

I recently got one of those portaband saws (Milwaukee) and use it way more than I thought I would, especially since I bought this for it:

If you don't have one already, I highly recommend it. Only thing I have to do is bolt it down because it would work even better then. The saw comes off with a simply thumb screw for other uses, but it is very handy on the table to cut tube or plate or bolts or whatever if you need a straight clean cut, regardless of angle. It's not quite as fast as a dry cut saw but you don't have to have the piece clamped so tight so you have more versatility with this. I still use the plasma for anything curved or too large to fit in there. They have different versions depending on what model saw you have, you'll be glad you bought it.

it will get a bit of triangulation on the bottom when I tie the hitch into it too... it will have 45's that come off the center and go further up the frame.. plus some more bracing as it ties into the lower rail at the sides, but I need to wait on the new inboard flip to see how that part is going to work out..

and also it will be more used for pulling rigs/boats onto trailers than extracting stuck rigs... hopefully... :haha:

thanks Heath, I've heard good things about those..... what I'm really digging is the fact I went with a larger 7 x12 saw... you can do some healthy length cuts in the clamped horo position... set the descent, and walk away... :woot:

I've yet to use it in vertical..

Looks beefy as hell. Nice job! What sawzall blades do you use? :D

thanks... I was just using the generic bi-metal blades we had kicking around for the sawzall at the marina... I forget the TPI of em, might have been Irwins.. cuts that frame steel like nothing.... thicker stuff? might be worth a bit finer tooth blade...

Oh, fancy! nevermind with the piddly portaband then, I'll just keeping watching the fab.

yeah, sawzall on the frame... but this on all the other fabby stuff... :woot:

:pimp:

gonna start cutting bed mounts tonight after work....

the beginning of the coffin...

ignore the extra length out the back.. needs to be trimmed down to 2" behind that back cross tube.. that's where the tailgate will sit...

100_1145_zpsd66e17ba.jpg

rear mounts, 3/8 plate, 1/2" bolts......

100_1146_zps3e7d0305.jpg

front section....

100_1143_zpsd828be9c.jpg

the front 3/8 mounts will get some side to side aid next week.. i'll be adding these plates to em, and 2 additional 1/2" bolts into the side of the frame...

100_1147_zpsa179e6c4.jpg

next week I'll do the angled tubes in the back and the upper coffin tubes... after that it will be the main 2" upper tubes that go out above the toolboxes and tires..

here's a shot from today with 2" blue tape showing where that main tube will run right below the bodyline.....

100_1140_zpsc50674cd.jpg

that lower tape mark shows where that lower coffin section sits I did today... it is also where the 1.5 tube below the toolboxes will be above the tires...

mang, I missed playing with tube.... :grind::weld:

the bandsaw just killed it today... luv that thang... :hack: :woot:

that's going to look nice and be super usable too...

do those brackets get bolted and welded to the frame or are bolts enough?

just bolted... I want/need it removable... I figure 12 1/2" grade 8's should be plenty...

Paul don't you find the yellow zinc don't cover no where near as good as the green?

yeah, I always prefer the green, but I use the yellow in a pinch when they're out of green... tho I think it may be a bit deceiving, your trying to go to a lighter color, so it may be that a bit more, than a difference in the primers..

* reminder to me, order zinc for the weekend...

look ma, a coffin! :haha:

you can just make out the holes at the ends here where I'll be slugging in the outer upper tubes... was originally gonna do it in the middle, but this worked out better and will be 1000x's easier...

done with lunch, back at it...

Yeah....I think your going a little heavy on the yellow...a p*ss coat is all it takes...:D Just kiddin'....seems I heard that somewhere before :haha:

It just ain't right not to be usin' Ryoken Green though....but in a pinch...

thanks.. :D

I figured out the back angle pieces and cut em, next week I'll cut the 4 long ones and get that set..

originally, I was just thinking in my head they would automatically be 45's... but as soon as I mocked that up, it was too much...

so than I hemmed and hawed on 30 or 35 degrees and ended up with 35 at the tailgate.... I always have the potential for doing a slightly different angle out behind the toolboxes too. but it'll more than likely be 35 too.....
