Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

:haha:

eh, ya never know.. the picture in my brain coulda turned to sh*t on a stick in reality... :doah:

thanks mang... till they call me in to the boat factory, I'm gonna pound full days on it and really try bang some stuff out...

Funny guy.....
I thought your work set the "cool expectations".
Keep it up, I continue to be awed by your junk:thumb::bow:.

No kidding. Paul, Greg, and Kert set the "cool" at levels a lot of us will never reach.

Looking really good Paul.

tomorrow I'll burn it in, sandblast the joints and get it in prime.... :weld: :pimp:

Madness absolute madness! The concept, visualization and reality of this build. Brings the :bow:bow:. I'm sure you get the often "There it is moment". When your thinking and all of a sudden boom! " That will work". Nice be able to visualize a finished project and bring it to life:waytogo:. Did I mention it looks killer:thumb:

thanks bud.. :o it's funny, I get the general idea in my head of how I want it to look overall... but you never know how that's gonna look in reality...

or MORE importantly how you're gonna achieve it.. :doah:

I usually have a good idea on how I'm gonna do most of the work, but there's always about 25% of it that's kinda up in the air, the details... how I'm gonna do the lower trailer receiver being one I still don't know exactly what I'm gonna do when I get to it...

but I must be making the tubegods happy with my offering tho :haha:, the tubegate gave me a couple pleasant surprises yesterday, a couple "situations" resolved themselves... as I had posted earlier the vid of the tubegate removal, you pushed it forward and removed.. needing some sort of removable stop...

well, don't need it now.. the design of the hinge allows the gate to also be removable when it's about 1/2 way in the down position, wasn't sure if it would work that way, but now I know it works fine, and SAVES me from having to do a removable stop/striker.. I can do a permanent weld-in deal...

also the gate hung down into that lower opening nicely when in the open position, but I was concerned about it swinging forward when I step on it.. not that it would have moved far, the winch plate being a few inches in front of it, but still...

well, that handrail makes an absolute POIFECT stop for it.. :saweet:

just realized this morn, I probably don't have enough zinc to shoot all that, think I'm down to a 1/2 can.. have to get more for tues..

hopefully the spare tire stuff shows up this week and that can be my next fab work... than the 1.5 work the following week..

that's the thing that, IMO, that marks a good fabricator. Being able to see the end result in your head and know what needs to be done to get you to that point. Of course, that takes alot of things into consideration. Like what equipment you have at your disposal, what materials you have, what is and what isn't practical and maybe most importantly, being able to visualize things that may interfere that have not even been designed yet.

For instance, designing your tube bed and being aware that the hitch has to fit in there and not building yourself into a corner to where you have to then change the tube bed to get the hitch in place.

reaching that vision was much more difficult in the days of a rock driveway, a pair of vise grips and a drill... :haha:

ah, gotta love sandblasting inside the Lab™, looks like the Sahara down there now.. :doah:

You sandblasted inside? :eek1: I wouldn't even try to do that when not using the cabinet. That's funny. It probably truly looks like an old dungeon now.

Have you ever noticed when you work a long day with the garage door open, then you close the door, and the outside of the door now has black abrasive and metal dust all over it and looks like crap. That stuff gets everywhere, but sandblasting is multiple times worse!

:haha:

yeah, I'm always amazed when I'm washing the driveway off and hit the doors and all this black cr@p comes off... :doah:

yeah, just super quick spotblasting of the joints.. I like to get all the nooks and crannies clean before primer... it's actually not THAT bad, I do it super quick and only hit the joints.. think I went thru a 1/2 bag of sand...

they came out good, but I'm actually smoothing them a bit with the die grinder.. I'm fine with fullsize tube welds showing, but the handrail gig looks soooooo much better with a smooth radius in the corners.. I'm about 1/4 of the way done.. should be finished tomorrow when my primer gets here...

and, the reason I came in the thread today...

PRO TOOLS FREAKIN ROCKS!!!!  :woot: :waytogo: :waytogo:

just got off the phone with em, got my 2 for 1 deal... didn't even have to ask, the girl offered it before I could even say something about them being closed last week.. or that the die I wanted wasn't even part of the deal.. bought a 1.75 x 6 and got the needed 1.5 x 6 for free.... :woot:

wont be here till sometime next week, it'll ship by Friday.. but I'm STOKED on getting that, great way to start the year!...

My wife notices... :doah:

She has made me paint the white garage doors twice already, and in the Spring I'm going to have to paint them again.

I thought there must be some kind of way to build a sort of "skirt" that hangs from the shop ceiling around the three sides of the rolled up door to keep the debris from landing up there in the first place.

Or maybe I just need my own detached workshop?..... Yeah, that's probably the best way to keep the garage doors clean... :haha:

Might As Well™

....except for the whole "My-Truck-Build-Is-Put-On-Hold-For-Two-Years-While-The-New-Shop-Gets-Built" thing.

I'd love a new shop, but the time penalty involved is just not worth it now.

do you have the land and zoning?

just picked up my primer from work and the Lab™ is warming up currently...

Our house is on 3 acres, so I'm sure we can easily do an "outbuilding" on the property. Construction costs are high, property taxes are high and time is valuable right now.... it just seems like the wrong place to spend effort and money right now with the kind of deadline I've set for myself.

In a perfect world, sure. I'd love a new shop. But just like you, I have a shop that is very functional (albeit somewhat space limited) and I can bang out the work I need to do.

Unfortunately, a detached shop isn't going to solve the problem, but move it. You now have two buildings on your property. One with clean garage door, and one with dirty garage door. Your wife will make paint that door to make everything look the same. Although a detach shop will solve other issues, but a clean door isn't one of then.

so.... thought I'd post this stuff up again, as it's kinda coming up when I pull that bank job next month...

so.... I felt funny, and still do, about calling for a price on these... without moollah to buy em.. :doah: kinda wanted a couple grand sitting around so I can actually put the order in, or at least the down payment to get them started...

but I'm so commited at this point to getting what I need, I think I'll nut up, call a sales guy this week, and try to get a ballpark price on what each of the 4 units will cost.. so I'm prepared (sticker shocked)

if that goes simple, I may check on a rough price for the underhanging boxes on each side.. but honestly, if the main 4 boxes blows me out of the water, I wont even ask on those.... and wait for that lotto ticket... :pimp:

oh, work... :doah: the rail is pretty damn smooth... bs'd all afternoon about KM2's and such , but should have that stuff primed morrow..
