Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

I figure I may get this... I don't know much about various steels.. I'd like something wear-resistant, so the tip will hold up... and it needs to be reasonable to weld, and drill a hole thru... so I figured something in a tool steel might be good, just don't know how weldable it is...

I saw they had chrome moly too, but don't know if my mig will weld that ok.....

ok, the decision is this, #1.. followed by #3 when I want to add the inner panel...

it'll work with the handle facing in ok... I'd rather have it out with the inner panel for sexayness, but this will work for initial fab/fitting work..

You can mig weld chromoly no problem. You're just losing strength at the weld which doesnt matter, the rest of the chromo will have the same wear qualities. Why not make the striker out of regular steel and get her glowing with the torch and give it an oil quench a few times?

Im thinking tool steel is going to be difficult to drill.

well some of the other offerings where pretty damn cheap too.. gonna buy 18", as long as it was under $20 I was fine with it.. so I figured maybe step it up in material quality a bit..

obviously I could just get the cheap cold rolled mild steel and I'm sure they'd work fine.. I'd probably be long dead by the time it wears bad.. I did plan on heattreating it...

think I have a pretty good plan/design for the latch deal.. of course it's overly convoluted and complicated...

but hey, we tend to like that around here anyway! :haha:

it's like 7 pieces per side... so it'll be a bunch of quality time with the plasma and grinder tomorrow... :weld::grind:

Yes, yes it is. Even with a drill press and cobalt bit and low speed and oil and swearing

think I'm just gonna do the cold rolled mild and quench the tip...

the "stopper" plate is 3/8"... it actually goes all the way up to the corner behind that tacked in piece... and butts flush with that first piece I put in, so burned in on both sides.. all the other pieces are/will be 1/8"... that tacked one will be ground flush with the tube when done..

tomorrow I'll do the 3 triangular plates... the other side isn't quite this far, but a couple of the pieces are cut out.. it's going pretty quick now, but I figure a solid 2 more days by the time I get the latches done, fitted and everything in primer..

hmmmmmmm.... don't think any of the ones they make today would hold up.... :haha: plus it's the wrong diameter, whatever it is, NEEDS to be 12" across...

I'm thinking taking an hr or 2 and doing something out of lumber is gonna be the way... do a negative mold per se.. push the alum into that with a pos half...

I definitely don't want to, or think I'll need to, heat it...

I length of 12" pipe?

I do wood turning. I can easily make you something on the lathe. How long would it have to be?

This ^^^^^^^ is why even if I had your skill (and I don't) my stuff wouldn't be as bad ass as yours.

Seriously, great work and attention to detail as always :waytogo:.

not long, like a foot.. thanks, your always ready to come thru with the favor, preciate that big time, but don't sweat it for now.. when I get to that hurdle we'll figure it out.. :D I was looking for pipe cuz it would be something I could weld down to a fab table, put some stop posts in, anneal and bend around it..

and honestly, that piece probably won't happen for a couple months.. and at this point I'm kinda leaning toward my original idea of a negative mold in a press or Stomis's skeleton deal..

I'm really not sure how I'm gonna bend this piece around ANY 12" diameter thing, whatever it is.. not like I can load any of these things in a bender to draw the alum around it.. and the idea of putting the alum on the ground, putting a foot on a cylinder and trying to bend the alum around it just doesn't seem very precise..

thanks mang.. it goes to that whole "get an idea in the head" deal.. :doah: :haha:

trust me, when it comes to "fix the DD'er or your not getting to work in the morn, etc" stuff, I'm ALL about just bangin it the flock out and gittin r done..

I could have come up with something MUCH simpler.. a piece of angle iron, another with a hole in it, flat plate for the latch, nuke it all, done.. it would work.. just kinda look a bit hack... I figure fock it, might as well make it nice since I got some time off here.. :doah: :pimp:

the other thing is, my daughter is grown, I have no better 1/2 to answer to, etc... most here have families, etc to take care of.. I can spend hr's in the Lab™ to get a "vision" done...

heck, I can eat cupcakes for dinner and nobodies gonna b*tch at me, other than my cardiologist... :woot: :doah: :pimp: :haha:

I like that!

My truck would be a lot different If I was in the same boat! :haha:
Not complaining... just saying! :D

nope... I know.. that's kinda why I reminded everyone of it... trust me, I'm jealous of all you with great family's and being responsible...

just remember, all my tools, toys and materials eat ALL my money.. I rent a house, have NO savings or equity and will work till the day I die..

so take some solace/satisfaction in that... :doah: :haha:

kinda looking like no work this week... no heat in the boat factory is not conducive to glass work, so... it's giving me time off for this... HOPEFULLY my dies will be showing up tomorrow, so I can segway right from this project into the lower tubes... :grind::weld::saweet:

I hear you Paul!
Do what you do to keep you happy though...we all learn and get inspired by what you do! :thumb:

I've said it before and I`ll say it again you would make a awesome teacher! :waytogo:

just a quick/longwinded sidetrack here since you mentioned the teacher thang..

I've always considered myself pretty good as a mentor when called upon.. my prob has always been finding someone I felt deserving of the hard-earned knowledge.. slackers need not apply, and that % has gotten worse over the yr's....

about 8, 9 yr's ago, I taught this mid-20's, Mexican detailer guy Bree, how to shrinkwrap boats...... the right way... he'd learn some things, master them over a few weeks, move onto the next steps, learn those, master them over the following weeks, rinse, repeat... he was a good kid, super hardworker and wanted to learn the right things.. I bet he's doing good shrinkwrapping to this day..

well, anyway.. after weeks of me training this kid, mostly in this big giant building we stored boats in, an oldtime boat owner, WW2 vet guy, who had been in that building for months everyday working on the bottom of his wood boat, walked up to me one day and says, "ya know, i just want you to know, that you're an outstanding teacher"...

out of the blue, one of the best, most respected, compliments I've ever gotten..

my prob is still finding the right students and having an issue revealing the secrets I've bled for, to people that don't respect/deserve it IMO... I just can't "teach everyone"..thus, why I'm truly not a teacher and more of a mentor, I suppose...

That's a good point Paul.

It took me all day to grind, sand and prep a bumper on Sunday..... Probably because my oldest son requested help tightening the chain on his bike (this turned into adjusting all his friends and my third boys bikes too) the middle boy needed help assembling the interior on his model Nova, the wife wanted the kitchen sink fixed and my daughter NEEDED to play Candy Land.

I am not complaining at all, it just feels weird to get up into the Garage at 9:00 AM and have 2 hours of real work done on the original project at 8:00 PM.:doah::haha:

That might have something to do with my, just get it tight and safe, attitude.

I still LOVE your work no matter what your situation is!:waytogo:
