btw.... just a tidbit of build info....

as you can see, those panels will sit 1/2 way down that perimeter tube...

the alum panel will have a dress bead of black silicone caulk around it's perimeter for a clean look once installed, make up for any gapping, etc, etc...

but as some would imagine, that leaves the potentiality for pooling water, up to an inch deep.. the front and rear "inner" corners will be drain holes that aren't caulked..

I may be getting a 4 day weekend here, we'll see.. I'd kind of like that, to bang thru a bunch of this panel work.. now that I'm in that mode...

Thought of your build and taillight discussion yesterday when I saw a flatbed with late model Dodge Charger taillight assembly recessed into the back of it. I've always thought the Charger's have a cool taillight.

funny you bring that up...

today, I was at a light and behind a newer mustang, and for the first time noticed the sequence taillights of them... I know, I must be sheltered or something.. not sure if I've been behind a new challenger or not...

but I think if I do the planned 4 reds, with sequence turns, it could be pretty cool...


should be buying the lights very soon after I order my toolboxes...

The Chargers don't have the sequential lights, but the taillight has perimeter light around the entire outside.

Yes, those Mustang tail lights are cool. I wasn't sure if the sequential thing was factory or an add-on by the owner of the car I saw.

I also like the turn signal arrows I've seen on 18-wheeler trailers. The light consists of a row of arrow points that flash sequentially.

wow, never seen that perimeter gig.. that's pretty neat.... I'd actually like to try something like that WAY down the road if I start working on an LED edge-lit panel like I was originally thinking of doing.. maybe someday when I make an extra set of al panels for back there...


I'm not into the arrow deal... it's just a bit too much of the "special bus" kinda feel about it to me.....

I'm figuring I'll do the 4 red/1 white per side deal.. and either initially, or after the fact, add the 4 bulb sequencer to it...

gonna see about banging out it's mirrored panel tomorrow.. than sunday I'll start on the coffin panels...

That looks beautiful man! What is your plan for scratch protection going forward? If you're going to be walking on it and tossing gear on it it seems like it'll get scratched up pretty quickly.

just resanding/scuffing it as needed here and there... it's not like it's gonna be getting chains and such tossed up on there...

I thought it was looking like the aluminum would sit below the top of the tube. Why not make it flush w/ the top to prevent the standing water problem?

because flush doesn't look nearly as good.. kind of the reasoning behind this whole build, was that exposed tube look... it also helps "retain" anything that may be on the deck that could roll off while on a job site, marker, pencil, etc...

and flush isn't actually flush, the thickness of the panel is above the tube.. it would have not looked good up there where the handrail is... .. potential knuckle scraper/basher too...

but I am doing flushmount on the coffin floor, in that case, it should work well because of the sidewalls it can butt up to...

as I mentioned, drainage is easily remedied, kinda like a mini scupper on a boat......... it's not something I'm concerned about, just mentioned it cuz I didn't think it was anything anyone other than me would have thought of.... and besides, it's not like I live in Seattle or something....



also, tho the alum will be nice for drawing/writing under, I also plan to have a rectangle of one of those thin, rubber, grippy mat things rolled up in one of the drawers that I can lay on the alum for a non-slip kinda of a work surface for putting things on.....

on a sidenote... I'm trying to sneak funding in for a gallon of Ryoken red, so I can get the back wall of the cab painted before I throw the bed back on...

since I'm liking the black countersinks, and the 1" length has worked out well, it's time to order the other 50 from McBible... already ran out..




Brown Santa showed up Friday too with 25' of 1/4" brakeline for the one I need to make up for the rear frame section...


also got some 1/4" chafe guard to go over the last few feet as it runs thru the gooseneck plate and bends out to the center hangar...
