that said, I hadn't really even contemplated it.... I suppose that could be handy.... not sure it would be worth another $200 in another door, filler and hose tho....

but technically, I could do it... same setup on the other side, moved back maybe 6", and the same hose across the tank deal as the other one...

heck, I could even have a bung welded in for it when they build the tank, and just not use it for awhile. just put a plug in it...
 
I just remember, especially if towing something, it was nice to have the saddle tanks on both sides of my K20. Gave me a lot more options at a gas station.

Unless i was filling both tanks, then it was a bitch. But you don't have that problem. :D
 
I think I'll definitely at least see about putting another bung in the tank... I can always add the other door, etc a couple yr's later or something..

fixed.... it is a dizzle too, so i'll be fine for a 6BT down the road...
 
going at the end of the week for 2 more 4' x 8' sheets of 1/4" alum.... that'll make 5 all together... that's PLENTY to do the doghouse and both hangin boxes...

wish I had figured it out at the beginning and bought it all, would have saved a fair amount... oh well....

also need a 4' x 8' of 1/8" for drawer dividers, front corners and lower mud skins.... at another $600 or so sheckles prolly altogether....

tho that does leave me with TON's of scrap pieces..

I figure, when it's all said and done the bed will have about 450 to 475 or so lb's of alum plate in it...

I'm not one to get a dog and just casually train it, out of respect for the dog, to be the best it can be...... this dog will get full classes and undivided attention... Malachi will be with me 24 hr's a day...

Reminds me of my last shepherd. Been a while.
 
Sorry... going back a little bit. I think dual tank fillers is a great idea! I remember many times being at a busy gas station, with a 24" enclosed trailer/race car behind my truck and having to wait for people to clear out because turning around wasn't an option. Being able to pull up and fill from any side would be a NICE bonus. I may steal that idea for my upcoming crew cab project :-)

I think the reason I had never contemplated it was exactly that, that I haven't been towing with the rig.. just DDing it....

I'm sure with the K5 on a gooseneck, or a boat on a hydro behind me would have me appreciating it hella more!
 
Just got done reading the saga. Hell of a build, looking fwd to reading the K5 build now. She must be getting lonely by now....:doah:

When are you going to start building the 'doghouse' in the back seat area. My old girl's got 2 bad ACL's now and we bring a ramp around for her to get in and out. Love to see what you come up with.

Couple of months ago you mentioned getting photoshop. Adobe will give you a free copy of the older CS2 if you're interested. you have to sign up for their account and then go to download page. did this a couple of months back and no spam from them.

Also wondering in your boxes, if you'd considered putting flip up type lids right on the drawers themselves to help keep your stuff from moving around.​

hey Josh, sorry, I missed this one.... thanks, and yeah, it is quite the novel.... the K5 one is much longer :doah: I suggest just looking at the pics.... :haha: I hope to be back on it over the winter...

the doghouse is actually what I'm calling the box on the tubebed over the fuel tank.. as it reminds me of a "doghouse" cover over the engines in older vans...

the backseat kennel will get started sometime next spring.... it will be quite extensive.. basically I'm removing the whole floor and building a custom flat floor (possibly including the front floor too...), with a compartment under it for the slide-out gangplank to come out on either side when the rear door is open.. that way the dog can run in and out... it will be set up with a bed, water and food bowl holders, etc....

I'm doing a framed expanded steel partition between the front and rear with a framed opening between the 2 buckets for the dog to stick his head thru.. it will also have expanded steel window guards, to keep idjits from messing with him.. and also to keep him from hanging out the windows...

I'll do the gangplank out of alum.. on that note.. I'm digging the spool gun, the spoolmate 100 seems like a decent little unit... no pro tool, but fine for a hobbyist.....

THE one thing I've learned so far is to not try getting hotter by getting closer to the alum like I do with steel.... burnbacks are a real b*tch.. it's happened twice now and disassembling the gun to fix/reload is a pain......but with proper gapping, I'm digging welding the alum.... the doghouse/fuel fill box are gonna be my first real welding project other than plug welds....

the plans to weld all corners inside and out, than round off the outers.... I'll give a more detailed review/pics when I get into that.. which hopefully should be next weekend....
 
Stop by your local PD and ask to check out one of their K9 cars before starting the kennel. The units they use have a couple trick features you might be interested in.

my one concern is what exact kind and size of expanded steel is good... I'm concerned about the pooches claws/pads... I really think it needs to be something that's round... like a chain link fence kinda deal, but with a bit smaller openings and definitely a bit thicker for rigidity..


expanded steel isn't probably the right term I'm looking for... :dunno:
 
There is the rubber coated expanded steel. I'm not sure where you can find it but I think that would work perfect.

I can't wait to see this part come together. The transformation of this truck is amazing:waytogo:
 
hmmmmm, maybe that's not the best solution...... vertical square/round tube might be a better choice..... seeing a few setups designed with that instead too.... definitely seems like it would be safer for the pooch to not get a paw hung up......
