Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

the only storage I'm considering for back there is some sort of drawer/compartment for toys, leashes, etc...

and POSSIBLY one for food, possibly... I'm not certain that's a good idea or not tho.. don't want to drive the dog crazy with food in there behind a metal door..

I do plan to have the whole back area usable for the dog... definitely not small and cage-ish like that one... tho the partition will be a bit behind the B-pillar due to going to buckets... I'll be doing the same PRP color config as the K5 ones, but I'll do the daily driver's, as opposed to the comps that are in the K5.. not as deep..

the bed area will be in the middle and bare floor by the doors, more than likely snap-in indoor/outdoor carpet so it's washable... the benefits of being a boat guy I have a couple good friends who do it for a living...

Also wondering in your boxes, if you'd considered putting flip up type lids right on the drawers themselves to help keep your stuff from moving around.

forgot this one too... instead of flip up lids, the outer box/frame is getting a lid welded to it.. the drawer is about 1/16" below that.. you can kinda see how it is here..

should be perfect.... if I tried to put a hinged panel on the drawers themselves, they would p[rolly only open like 60, 70 degrees due to the drawers being slightly recessed under the top tube....

Some bar stock may be cheaper and may fit the profile of the truck - tube bed and all.

I'm thinking maybe some 1" tube........ like .090 wall... framed with strip steel top and bottom, and around the center head access/console/treat feeding/head patting hole...

eh, it should be under 9 g's I figure.... :haha:

I figure 1".090 wall is pretty light.. but yeah, it does all add up.... wait till it get's the 6BT! :doah: :haha:

just ballparked it, a partition made like that should be about 60 lb's or so..

hmmmmm, maybe that's not the best solution...... vertical square/round tube might be a better choice..... seeing a few setups designed with that instead too.... definitely seems like it would be safer for the pooch to not get a paw hung up......

Just seeing some of those cages for the dogs should scare off would be bad guys. Makes you think "imagine the beast that needs that to contain it!" :eek1: :D

:haha: no doubt!

Ryokan, I was referring to the entire rig. Even with the flat bed, you've put a lot of tube and metal:saweet::saweet::saweet: on it. I was really being sarcastic but as far as outweighing a tank when it comes to the coolness factor. Yeah it outweighs a tank by eleventy!:thumb:

she's gonna be a hefty girl no doubt... :pimp:  :haha:

actually now that this came up, I'll have to find a reason to go to the recycling center and get it on the scales...

it's neat, but I don't know, anything with a ma deuce on it is pretty freakin cool.... :weapon39: :haha:

thanks.... :waytogo:

hmmm, maybe I should look to do the partition in alum now that I have the capability... would look cool, be lighter, wouldn't have to worry about the dog scratching off paint and such...

plus it would carry some of that alum theme to the cab interior..

I had actually already thought about an alum center console for when I go buckets...

I think aluminum on the partition is a great idea. Easy to clean. Easy to touch up ( I assume you will just scotchbrite it) No rust worries.

I really really really need to get a spool gun :D

This is the style our guys use. You're going to want solid sheet metal for the bottom w/ a rubber matt for traction and cushioning (plus easily cleaned). Most have sheetmetal on the bottom half of the partition wall and expanded steel on top where this one has bars. Ours even have a fan filling the space between the edge of the cage and door to help get ac to the rear. They can also have a built in cooler in the floor to help keep the dogs cool. You could easily leave a slot in the side under the floor for a ramp to slide in/ out. They also have a sliding door so the dog can pass into the front between the seats.

thanks for the input.... :waytogo:

I had thought about solid sheet on the lower 1/2 after seeing a bunch of pics..... couple reasons in my thinking... one, I don't want the dog sticking paws thru the bars up under the seats trying to get to things.. second, I'll have a nice new pair of PRP's that I wont want getting all ripped up by a dog claw...

a sliding door between the seats is intriguing, but with a center console, not sure how feasible...

over the winter I'll start drawing up some plans...

the mesh has the best looks and wont rip doggies claws off like they could if they get into the pinch point of expanded metal ... plus probably a LOT less work than the tubing... tubing would be cool looking too and just as safe though.

yeah, that mesh is definitely better than the diamond-y shape of expanded.... I'm still leaning towards the vertical tube deal.. think that could look really really trick... and Malachi deserves trick... :pimp:

I'll get more into this design in the fall...

well, going at 7 am in the morn for more alum... 2 4' x 8' of 1/4", and one of 1/8....

should be lot's o' chips flying around the LAB™ this weekend! :saweet:

I haven't been through this build in a while. I just skimmed it, glad to see how far you have come with it.

Love the truck Paul, you do crazy good work. Make friends with that kid, he may become a trainee for ya!

love the Mutt:bow:

The brainstorming in this thread is one of my favorite parts of this build. It's a virtual version of dudes standing around bsing about different fun ideas and such. I dig it.

one of the funnest things I've ever done was Daves Iron maiden build party. bunch of dudes ACTUALLY standing around conversing about ideas and then DOING them:waytogo: wish there were more of them I could get into.

this is the next best thing though:D
