Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

dubble-like...... ;)

I'd like to have these done and everything else coated before i go back to work... i did all the doors the other day... i "think" i go back to work next monday... the 19th...

gonna have to start bugging Kert about my tabs.... it's a pain in the arse dicky non money maker kind of order, but I'm really gonna need them in a week or 2 to get going on the bellypans...

I absolutely admire your skills. The work you produce is really top notch. I say to do what you feel makes you happy and the least amount of stress in life. To me its always a work life balance, I have many hobbies so my trucks rotate in through the mix. Nice job on your build like always.

thanks man.. :)

it's just sometimes the amount of labor i need to put in to get things close to what my brain wants...... becomes daunting..... i spend more time on a couple bed panels, than guys do on an LS swap.. :doah: :haha:

as the other post implied, it's kind of like a marathon where your ready to die at mile 14, yet still have a long way to go... :doah: :haha:

it does make the end result somewhat satisfying (tho it always seems I fall a tad short in my anal brain) ... but I'm kind of stoked on where i think the rig could be at the end of the summer.... no, it wont have the 6BT in it, it may not even have the tank done.. but it will have progressed and improved, and i'm thinking some folks will dig it....

i really want to put it out there for the masses to see, done or not... englishtown, maybe a few other shows... i feel it's different enough that it may make a bunch of folks smile.. no, it's not show car perfect (heck, under the hood is pretty plain jane stock) but I think it's "vision" helps make up for that..

To me driving them and chatting with people is great motivation on a build. I am always one to make sure I dont have a truck down for a while because it becomes too much, but I would definitely bring it down to a show and chat with people, it fires you right up.

It's funny... in the right environment, like a car show maybe, I love to talk gearhead stuff.. i can do that all day with like-minded people... one of you guys comes to The LAB™, I'll yack all day.... but the average everyday encounter in a parking lot or sumfin is kind of awkward/embarrassing to me for some reason... :screwy:

i really don't even want it for motivation, or acknowledgement that I'm on the right path or something... if I didn't think it was neat, I wouldn't have built it.. the motivation comes from the very small increments I make towards my final pic, however small they may be.. or more importantly, getting a bit of coin to get it closer to that...

it's really about giving people something different to check out than the normal stuff everyone sees all the time... the standard hotrod, truck stuff everyone builds.. like i said, a 12 yr old kids smile would mean more to me than anything... pointing a finger, "Dad, Dad, check this out!"

and they don't know an LS from a rotary... :haha:

1 big panel down, 1 to go....

something I determined on my ride out to mom's today for my birfday din din, was that the next time Mutt comes out and is fancied up and ready to show/go, is to document the rig a bit better....

I get a lot of requests about specific things on the rig... and while I do have a ton of pics, a good portion as everyone here knows, are "in progress" ones.... I find myself scrambling to find good pics of various mods, yada.... so when it's back, out looking good, i want to actually go thru the trouble to spend a day somewhere where i can get some real good pics and really document the different aspects of the build.. including some vid, maybe a walkthru and such...

hmmmm, i wonder if i actually know someone who is a photographer..... or someone with more than a $75 camera... :doah: :haha:

I've always sucked at photography unfortunately... I learned that as a skater.. i knew what looked good, just had trouble getting the end result...

slight different approach for Mutt the next few months... I'm not gonna drive myself crazy getting the rig back "out" for april 1st or similar... I'm just gonna leave the taillights in it for emergency use... and continue to get ALL the panels redone and coated... right now I'm about to start doing the coffin plates, and tubegate ones... as you can see, I still need to pull the front corner and lower box ones off...

also.. just a note to anyone running my style extinguisher mounts.. make sure you exercise and lube them... I just had a hella time getting mine off.. they hadn't been off in probably 9, 10 months... had to get a hammer/screwdriver... that would of sucked in an emergency..

anyone have any good articles/links about fuel tank baffling?

I know, Dave, Kert, Greg, etc have all made tanks.... I know i want to have some kind of a sump box around the pump/pickup... but i would also like to add another baffle or 2 that extend out to the sidewalls to help with rigidity, especially across the bottom... and just the sheer force of 50, 60 gals moving around... but I don't know how far up these things should go, etc....

obviously I'll be seeking my tank builders advice on this, as they do tons.. but i just want to inform myself a bit, and maybe have some additional drawings on paper to bring with me....

here's a quickie of some general outside dimensions of the tank.....

I know you want have the baffle to go at leasthalf way up for when the level is half or less you never starve the pickup.
But you are better all the way up for limiting the movement of the big volume of fuel to eliminate the ram effect.
You also need to have the bottom open to let the fuel slowly move around, so either hole or gaps at the bottom

thanks.... yeah, i seem to remember seeing people holesawing the bottom corners out of sump walls.. 1/4 of a circle at each corner.. heck, an angle cut would prolly work fine too....

i really want to get some "wall to wall" stuff across the bottom.. obviously having openings for flow.. even if they only go up 1/2 way... i really think that will help with the structure of the tank bottom.. as opposed to just some 1' x 1' box around the pickup.. to help with any "oil canning" that could happen.... considering the tank will have 350 to 400 lb's in it when full..

think i'll play around in paint tonight...

Yeah 50-60 GAL I would go wall to wall and all the way up to keep the fuel from ramming you

When I built saddle tanks for my 70’ Chevy pickup out of 304 stainless 1/8 in sheetmetal I baffled all the way up but left gaps for fuel to move at the bottom. That worked great. I should have never sold that truck or those tanks. Live & learn

me thinks that 6BT may be headed my way much sooner than I thought...... drove by the dude's house last night, and see a big new truck in the other driveway.... if he bought a new rig, parking is at a premium over there for him... he really only has 2 1/2 spots.. new challenger in the garage, and the dodge outside.

i may be getting a knock on my door soon.... ;) need to stash $500 somewhere in the house for that deposit.. ;)

the kick in the nads being, I'm already 20 g's in CC debt currently, and yesterday the fridge died.... there's $700 i didn't have...

Damn brother that sucks, but I know that pain my self. I feel for ya big time, debt sucks assssss

got an $800 scratch/dent for $400.... :)

thanks Rob... i just need to nut up and pay huge amounts off on the CC bills.. i wanna get it 1/2 way down by x-mas..... which means i need to put in the hr's...

but that also means really curtailing spending... a 3g Cummins is not curtailing.. ;) but i will HAVE to find a way to do that.. an 85,000 mile mill like that isn't gonna fall in my lap again..
