Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

Bahahaha, I use that shit on my lawn mower deck.
I don't think it would hold up to the heat of a turbo manifold.
One does not necessarily mean the other.
Graphite can take a lot of heat and if it doesn't, unlike paint it will be easy to touch up.
If I knew about it when I was putting together my 6.2 I would have done it.
I probably will later when I get to the finishing work.
Now I need to drive it so I need to finish hooking it up

ok, phase 1 of "Ryoken's mill maintenance" is done... the block is clean and has an initial coat of beige on it.... a prime coat per se...

FTR.... all gasket surfaces are properly surfaced and lacquer thinnered, cavities are all fully packed with paper towels and 2 layers of tape are applied... all tubes and such get hydraulic caps in them and 2 layers of tape...

now I can pull the tins, pump, etc clean those areas up, run the parts thru the cabinet, paint em..... doing the tappet cover too...

KDP......

than reassemble and one last overcoat of beige...

pull the vc's and final paint them red.. i'm 50/50 on whether they should be red or black... i won't know until the mill is in and i can see it in its natural habitat. ;)

.

If you're planning some boost later down the road, and doing the tappet cover now, then it's time to put a keating machine tappet cover on.

Well done. It looks sharp.

more about my OCD'ness can now live knowing I have outstanding adhesion characteristics..... :screwy: ;)

now comes the fun part... me likey clean/assembly work...... :saweet:

I'm really liking the beige too.. no matter which way I go with the VC's, the tan is a perfect 4th color to all the red, silver and black on the rig..

Looks good. I like red on a cummins. It is a factory engine color on their newer stuff anyways. I like to do the tan engine with like a red oil pan and front cover and valve covers. Most of the lower stuff is covered up anyways but why not.

if i was gonna do red, i would have done my Ryo red...... but i actually think the tan will draw your eyes to it better... i thought it would be a bit matchy matchy in red with the firewall.. and i kinda feel that way about the pan too.. for looky lou's at the car shows... i hope i feel this way when done.. not something i'm ever gonna wanna change... :doah:

But I feel like my mental image so far for the rig has been pretty spot on aesthetically... other than my grill brainfart.... :haha:

decided to pop the injectors and Engine Stor the cylinders since it's gonna sit a while.... trying to decide which tappet cover i want... $$$$ are tight right now... gonna start farting around with a KDP repair today hopefully....

oh, and i'm having an issue.... :haha: filing in at priority #63 is my undying passion for milled raised VC's.... it's one of those parts that i need like a hole in the head... serves no purpose other than looks... maybe someone will buy em for me for x-mas next yr.. :haha: :dunno: :woot:

AND I actually really hate Edelbrock versions of it, ESPECIALLY the air cleaners... but man, I can't help thinking those, done in Ryo red, or even black, with the tops milled back to alum, would look trick as he!! on top of the tan... especially if there's gonna be a splash of alum here and there in there, like a tappet cover, etc... possibly the intake horn in red, but that could be black too.. until i see it coming together in the space, it's hard for me decide which way to go.. I'll figure it out... bolt on's are easily color changed...

hmmmm, maybe it might be worth taking a couple hrs in paint to change some existing 6 BT engine compartment pics over to different color schemes...

coffee in hand, off to the now warm, LAB™ I go......

Yep there are all kinds of badass looking valve covers for a 12 valve. Also they have the fancy cover doohicky that goes on top of the factory ones if you wanted to go that route like what dodge had from the factory but custom.

i like the individual look.. i wouldn't go to a "full cover" billet fancy one... i did see those crazy race dual ones too...

Alot of people with blowby issues run the case tractor/backhoe ones that are two covers connected with a breather and they will run two of those . You'd have to have a massive amount of blowby pushing oil out of all your seals to need to go that route I think.

yeah, that's the ones i saw.. no need for that...

started coating that manifold this afternoon... running parts thru the cab now...

How many coats was that, and was the burnishing/polishing time consuming? How does the finish feel. Looks pretty good though!

it actually does look real good.... ;) douched just about a whole can on it.. that was a good 3, 4 heavy coats.. they say to do 2... it burnishes SUPER easy... sock rag and literally 5 minutes of rubbing had it looking like that... it feels pretty slick, like you might expect from a burnished graphite surface... we'll see how it holds up.... i'll probably pick up a can of the liquid once i start driving it for touch ups....
