Ryoken's 96 Furd twofiddy

Can you get a better look at things by pulling the bed?

well.. I could definitely spy the tank better.. but I'm really not into pulling that... logistically for one.. i'd have to do that down at the marina with our machine.. and to be honest, for this build, I'd be fine with leaving the bed, and blasting the back rails in place like i did the front.. be nice with the bed off, but not needed...

plus, i need to do the bracket, which, while doable with the tank in, would be much easier/better out.. plus the rail prep it really screams for..

funny thing is from the front edge of the bracket forward, the rail looks good... it's the last foot or so is super crusty......

oh, my wheel cover showed.. it's nice.. we'll see how that goes... figure one morn i'll go out with my coffee, some zen-like tunes and try to not strangle myself while installing...

was glad to get a bit of good luck for a change today...

when I got this rig, i knew the bats were iffy, 5 yr range... pretty bloated....

they're a goofy grp 65.... turns out a #27 fits in the trays beautiful... I already run a pair in Mutt and in Blackie.. so, 2 more in rotation... basically, I end up with #27 sportsmans and interstates for free or a smokin deal at the marina..... plus, I have a pair of shop ones to run the rest of this winter...

oh, and stripped the steering wheel down for the new cover...

here's how the wheel looks with the stitched Furd cover removed....

I'm thinking I'll fill the upper 2 grooves with something prior to wrapping.. maybe some twine/parachord soaked in epoxy..

The wheel doesn’t look that bad with nothing on it. Better than the tattered cover anyway.

agreed.. doesn't drive bad either.. when I'm bored, I'll give it a shot... $12...

I'm actually back working on Mutt tomorrow...

How do you like fueling this thing up? I'm guessing it sucks and is slow as hell like all the Fords of this era I have driven. My last one took a good 15 min at the pump to do both tanks full.

it's funnay you bring that up... Rog said it was always real slow... and it was horrendous for me the first time, couldn't even set it on the minimum click...

but I found the second time if I turned the nozzle 90* to the back, it takes it MUCH faster... must be shooting at the sidewall or sumfin... like it was going in the vent or something the other way...

I have a chevy with a flatbed on it here at work that is that sane way. Won't barely fill but turn it 90 degrees and she takes all you can give her.

might want to check in on doing the hutch mod on the tank you cut part of the filler neck off gain 3-5 gallons of capacity tank fills lots faster to

soooooooooooo, random babble........

in a moment of humanity, the fuRd has been pressed into sole duty.. I was committed to running it, but..... Blackie hadn't been fired up in weeks..

well, my yard guy Brian's POS died.... I offered to lend him Blackie for a couple wks here leading up to x-mas.. told him, no, I won't sell it to him before he even thought to ask.. I busted my arse on this fuRd for a few months now for a reason.. to have a backup to Blackie.. Mutt is in "emergency use" mode at this point, and soon to be disabled.. but Blackie is turn-key petrol reliable in case the dizzle posed any issue..

let alone the leaf spring ending up in the bed...

i felt bad... :o

he's a decent dude, just a bit of a fug-up... which is BEYOND ironic being typed by me... :haha: :haha: :haha: :doah:

lost his house, living in a hotel..... I originally bought the rig from him like 7 yrs ago now.. fug, think I have like 40 g's on it now..... and he has helped me out in the past... heck, he lent me Blackie to go pick up the front clip for the K5.....

karma I guess.....

on that note... I'm convinced the hydro system in the fuRd needs an overhaul... i e-mailed southbend about their kit.. not in stock and no friggin ETA... it's super tough getting the ZF in reverse at times.. but I found if I double pump the clutch, it helps tremendously... that to me, indicates an issue....

waiting on a reply from Jeff's about fuel tank stuff... but i have bracket/shackle waiting to go when they let loose...

it's a bit different making sure I wait till glow plugs have done their job before firing... ;) really wanna throw a pair of fresh 27's at this thing, but it is a $200 bill with the boss's... trying to give it 1.5 hrs in the morn on the block heater... but it's only been upper 20's... get down to the teens, I have no issue plugging it in all night....

my buddy mentioned something about disconnecting the solenoid plug for the cold turbo exhaust valve thingy if it's being doggy in the morn?????

oh, side tank, straps, etc ordered...

.

ready to go in...

happened to have some grade 8 stout bolts with heavy washers for the bracket/shackle....

HOPEFULLY I get the tank, etc before x-mas... a bit of decent jan weather, and I'd love to get this project underway..

the plan is get the new front tank in and operational.. than gut the back, sandblast the rails/prime/paint and replace the hangar/shackle...

maybe next summer/fall I'll replace that rear tank.... rather have the back gutted, and the rails/rig, solid/preserved as best as possible, without the tank, than a rusty/leaking disaster waiting to happen...

oh, and an aside to this...

while I may not be pulling the bed for this project, i WILL be lopping off the bumper. just gonna be easier to do the rails/tank, etc with it out of the way..

and yup, it'll get the same treatment as the front, satin black with the plastic top... things straight as an arrow, MAW while I have it off......

I should really just buy the tailgate, but I try to draw the line on occasion... :haha: it'll do for a while, purely cosmetic......

so i'm all set to go on this project... got the new tank ready to go in, with the sender installed, new straps and anti-squeak....

even ended up picking up 320 lbs of blasting sand for the rear frame rails cuz it finally came in....... so 2 phases.. front tank.. than rip the back apart and save those frame rails...
