Ryoken's 96 Furd twofiddy

oh, and this is hammered on both sides.. it needs a core support........

Dang it! I was hoping it was as clean as the rest of the truck. Back when I had mine good core supports were hard to find or the guys that had them wanted $700 for them. But you’re good enough with body work I’ll bet you could graft the radiator hoop from yours into a gas one since they’re easier to find in good shape. Pulling the core support is the worst job on one of those trucks in my opinion, not hard just really annoying with all the hidden bolts

Ooff ! Gotta agee! Not horable but not fun. Ah it’s just time and money! Who doesn’t have lots of that!? Lol!

Actually thinking about that, the two Rangers we were working on had bad rust on the core supports.
2003 and 2004.

well, hello rabbit hole...

so... I have to think about when I wanna tackle a project like this.... it really all needs to be done at once.. I'll need to be doing a rad support, all the body mounts, and drop/replace/repair that front tank.... that'll take me 3 weekends when I'm working minimum... or i can try to do it over winter break in a week or so... I do need to get to it, the rig is worth fixing at this point... and yeah, it's a big job.. nothings has been apart, so the fasteners will be rusty, etc.. lot's of components to shuffle around/remove.

it's also money, and time, away from Mutt, ... i'd just do a replacement, it's pretty hammered.. they do make them aftermarket, in various qualities too apparently... need to do a bit more research, but the "nicer" one they sell is $150.. cheapy like 80... but throw in shipping, and really if I'm gonna order sheetmetal, I should get a tailgate too.. maybe even cheap patches for the wells.... throw in $200 for mounts and a couple hundy for a tank, etc, and it'll be a grand...

I'm thinking this might make a good jan project...

so...... being they only had 1 in stock, I decided to pop on the best support i could find... be here sat... decided to hold off on the tailgate till i tackle the wheel wells...

gonna order the body mounts now....

gonna get Mutt's rockers in this weekend, but I may try to sneak the support/mounts in the following weekends.. so I want the parts on hand... like to get the leaky tank out and get the mounts/cab solid.... even if I don't get the tank back in right away....

the biggest issue is titling/tagging the rig.. afraid of DMV right now, we'll see next rain day.... might as well plow thru that project if I can't drive it......

another thing I need to address is the clutch pedal being so low.. literally an inch or 2 off the floor it's engaging... i know it had a clutch put in 2, 3 yrs ago, so I'm suspect of the hydro and slave.... the pedal bushing is fine.. I see south bend makes an upgraded kit for the hydro slave at a couple hundy.. i may splurge for that at some point over the fall/winter to see if it helps raise the pedal a bit...

Did you look under the dash at the clutch linkage? I have had some where the cross bar thing is hammered.

What do you need an upgraded slave for? The stock replacement is probably cheap and more than adequate.

thats all tight...

i've had issues with stock hydro replacements before.. the aftermarket units can be super cheesy sometimes.. Blackie went thru 3 before i got lucky and found an older metal unit that actually held up.... i'd rather start out spending an extra hundy and get a quality unit...

If I remember correctly there is also problems with a magnesium/aluminum bracket for the clutch pedal up under the dash breaking and firewall separation or something like that.

what i had read about was a white nylon type bushing up there that wears out.... it's there, and all seems right and tight under the dash.... i'll snap a pic when i get into it.... i did also read something about a cheat..... where you take something apart and clock it some.. it may be that shaft or something...

my boss said this morn that the pedal has ALWAYS been low.. even back in the day, and right after the clutch job... which he corrected me, it was more like 6 yrs ago.. but it has very low milage on the new one so i'm pretty confident in it.... i'll research that whole situation more. i definitely don't like it that low....

If I remember correctly on my '90 it was at least level with the brake pedal and functioned like you would normally think it should. I don't remember feeling like it was low.

Right... My GM stuff all engages prolly 1/3 the way up or so....

so here is how much room Kai gets in the back.... I'll probably put a couple moving blankets down for him.... should make an awesome kennel area....

I "think" those 2 front cab mounts, are captured nut stuff, like GM.. I'll have to look further this weekend when I drop the tank skidplate..... the rears are actually thru-bolted...

on an aside, 2026 note.. This front end screams for a tube bumper... I can see it in my brain....

and the obvious culprit....... looks like I'll be fabbing one......

well, that sucks.. apparently carparts.com DIDN'T have 1 left, cuz they sent me the wrong support..... way too thin, box says 92 to 94 w/o ac...... different part #... they don't even ask about ac on the site? so i'm doing the return/credit deal with India and will be looking for one still... hope it isn't some national back order crap, as LMC was backordered....

edit... boy they suck... gonna be 10 to 14 days by the time i get my money back, no credit till they get it..... PLUS i gotta drive all the way over and drop it off at the fed x joint, which means during MY working hrs...

boy, I may be fugged hard here.... I'm thinking the diesel version is discontinued... gonna call LMC mon, or tomorrow, and see if that's the case and if they will NOT be getting more...

i think everyone has these gas versions only... that's what the difference is, down at the bottom, for the big dizzle rad.. it sits 6" lower.... and about 2 deeper... basically, this, is different...

what i may have to do is cannibalize this one, and redo the bottom part... the nice thing about the furd is that the rad bolts up at the sides, and basically floats at the bottom...

as you can see here, this is not fixable.. i can basically rip the whole lower pan off....

mount areas, both the same....

so, I'll decide mid next week if I'm actually gonna return it if the right one isn't available....

if I do fab my own lower, it will be full custom... my kingdom for a sheetmetal brake right now... need to do new lower brackets for the AC condenser too....

I may put this part off till winter.... do the 4 cab bushings, and maybe even put a tank back in it.... than do the support, last 2 mounts in jan....
