Ryoken's 96 Furd twofiddy

so why did furd, and jeep, in their infinite wisdum, run shackles like this? i understand the "con", but don't know the "pro" to the setup... :dunno:

Allegedly, this design handles better. (IH used front shackles on Scouts as well) it’s supposed to be less prone to bump steer . It’s also suppose to be superior off road , theoretically when the tire comes up against an obstacle and the spring is compressed the axle is forced forward INTO the obstacle vs away from it . Allegedly giving more traction.

Seat of the pants experience says it’s a much harsher ride with little if any improvements in handling vs a rear hung shackle.

I will say this , a shackle reversal and a Dana 60 swap on a F250 like yours is a game changer . It actually makes the truck nice to drive.

me personally, I would do the coil sprung Superduty axle swap long before I messed with keeping the leafs.

thanks.... I'd consider it, i'll have to look at those kits again.. not sure how much more pricey it would be... but obviously if I'm ready to throw an 04 60 under it, I'm looking for a quality package when done... I just don't want to literally spend a dime on what's under there currently, other than a pair of tires for safety sake..

one thing I'll say about this rig is, it's definitely a goofy swapover era for these... I've seen MULTIPLE major companies list different yr ranges for the same exact part.... the rig is technically a 97.. that's how the vin comes up... 10/96 production date... but certain things you look up will run thru 96, but you know the 97 is the same... other things will run thru 98... etc.... the body mounts where like that, and others too... I find myself using 96 for looking up parts for the most part.. but i do keep my eye on supposed yr beaks...

still waiting on that return line, but I stripped/primed/painted the x-member and 1/2 the pan... than started getting it back together.. HD belt, sensor, pressure hose...

here's the front of that line, it's leaking right where the goofy furd clip holds it to the rail... you can see the quick connects at the top of the rail, than it's like 4' of tube, than those whips/connectors at the valve.... it's surprising cuz look how clean those lines look....

I'm actually gonna give it a shot this week and call Downs Ford and see if there's anyway one is sitting at a dealer somewhere database kind of check.. ;) if not, I'll make one...

nice P-valve eh?? ;)

oh, and can you imagine how bad I just wanna hot knife that suspension axle out in one big hunk of poo down to the rails and purdy shock towers??? :weld: :hack: :saweet: :doah:

that'd be fun having the axle and kit to do it...

now where'd that lottery ticket go....... :doah:

oh, comical note of the day.... I hadn't even noticed till today when I took it off... whoever the last idjit that did tires for him, put that ds tire lugnuts on backwards... I didn't even notice when I ripped the 7 luggers off.... :haha: luckily the rim doesn't look any worse for wear...

cool, just checked, those are 8" rims, I can run a 35 x 12.5 easy enough... I'm thinking mud terrains...

I swear, I'm 1/2 tempted to buy a pair of these, run em on the back, and move the good 285's up front... get that ole 70's rake going... :pimp: than when i lift it, i only need 2 tires! :haha:

return line showed....

FTR, I shoot a couple quick coats of satin clear over the metal...

hopefully I get a good day in sunday.. sat I gotta help mom... looking to at least trim out the front of the fenders and paint the valance in argent... I MAY try to douche the whole sides, see how far i get and how the weather is... if i just trim, I'll start getting the support in, ps well, etc.. gonna leave the ds well out for a bit to more easily access those fuel lines...

decided to just put some color on the whole fenders instead of just trimming em out to get a feel for how it's gonna look and cover/check the bodywork... I'll have to overcoat it obviously when I shoot the rest of the side. this color is about as horrible as it gets to panel match, so i won't put the fender emblems on yet...

you can see it's a bit darker and platinum-ish than the rattlecan rims.. i dig it.. obviously I'll have to reshoot the rims at some point... but I think the color is gonna look good with the black pinstriping and front treatment...

gonna shoot the valance this afternoon in the LAB™ when it starts raining.....

the valance needs to go back in early on, that's why I needed to get this all trimmed out...

I like that a lot better then the white. Not so bright.

I think it allows me to thug the rig out... red/black/silver... i'll shoot the mirrors black and the windshield trim at some point...

the only thing I'm not sure of is if I'm gonna shoot the factory bumper black, or argent, temporarily.. it does have the black plastic in it to break it up a bit... i'll decide when I get the lights/black surround and billet grill in... either way, eventually it'll be a Ryoken one in satin black...

full

oh, and for the extreme minutia stuff... I' think I'm gonna do my own custom "4 x 4" on the back of the qrter panel at some point.. i was gonna buy the factory one in black, to sit over the argent... than i was gonna just leave it off.. but now i think i'm gonna do a custom red/black one to kinda go along with the fender emblems... thinking black lettering with the red for shadowing over the argent...

I swear to momma, I'm gonna run 35's with no lift on this...  :dunno: :haha:

dig the emblem look... pretty subtle...

definitely more pewter-y than the rims.... I like it, lends itself to all the black I'm gonna add better than the lighter silver I think...... boy, it all makes the red look sooooo shabby.... :doah:

maybe you guys can save me some leg work here... anyone happen to know what this vacuum switch/solenoid/doohickey thing is? did I see something about a turbo solenoid or something? goes to booster, engine, has electric plug...

full

as far as I know, it works... but you can't even unbolt it, it's so crusty... if it's $38, i may as well replace it now...

I think that is called the low vacuum warning switch from what I found. It sounds like it just turns the brake light on in the dash when there is a loss of vacuum. Doesn't sound like it's available anywhere from the google search and forum posts I saw.

guess i'll hope it continues to work.. ;) thanks.... :)

well, much needed rain day again today.... looking like a 4 day weekend here... gonna fart around in The LAB™ later after killing some aliens... :saweet:

gonna throw a couple piss coats of satin on that well too...

not sure what else I'll play with.. hmmmm, maybe I'll bring the bumper in and start prepping that for some paint...

my neighbors all dig the argent... :pimp: excited to get the rig back on the road and get the sides finished out...
