Ryoken's 96 Furd twofiddy

check the ignition switch, there was a recall on that switch, should have been done. Now the recall switch is 20 years old, and I never saw a big improvement over the old design.

the switch starts to separate then the shuttle misses contact with some or all of the circuits. At worse it shorts to ground and starts a fire.
Is on the column behind knee bolster. Time for under dash yoga stretches

I'm pretty certain it's fuel related, injectors not firing on crank... i ran the rig REAL low on oil.. was down about 4 qrts.. these motors are notorious for needing good oil and not stoopid low like that... i'm hoping now that i topped it off and have been running it some, it'll help clear any issue the hpop system was having.. gonna try to get it running again now, and let it idle in the driveway for an hr.. this weekend i'll check the level in the hpop ressy..

I'm actually thinking of getting an economical obd2 reader for the rig... not that it's throwing a CEL, but...

yeah i was thinking that the fuel pump might not getting a signal from switch circuit during cranking, or low current. which lead me to the the notorious ignition switch issue

Low oil won't hurt anything but if it was low enough to not fire the injectors it would put air in the system. Just takes some miles to get it out. Most likely won't cause a starting issue though.

that's why I've been running the heck out of it in the driveway tonight.. idle for 1/2 hr, steady 1500, 2000, back to idle for 45 min, back to steady 2 g's, etc... it seemed to start back up pretty good after shutting it down... I'm in no rush, i'll do that the next couple nights and see how it does... i think the rig needed a bit of a break and some luv anyway after a yr of solid performance........

think I just found the final piece of the "difficult starting" issue.... low bats, low oil, and.....

been back driving the rig a week or so, starter sh*t the bed at lunch today... so I'm thinking it may have been crapping out for a while now... maybe it was a bit slow, etc... luckily a few hammer whacks got it going to get it home...

just ordered a motorcraft one, $285.... not too bad, i was expecting it to be stooopid in the $400 range....

no cheapies for this mill... my boss said the same... he replaced the original like 100,000 ago with a cheapie, and it lasted a month... put a good motorcraft in and it lasted 100 g's now...

hats off to https://prosourcediesel.com/ ordered that starter monday at 5:30... it showed today.. free 3 to 5 day shipping too.. took 1.5..... I would have been very happy to get it friday...

just plan to throw it in sat morn... with 5 pm darkthirty, weekdays are useless now....

really want this rig back up and reliable for the winter.. even tho, I don't tend to drive much...

well, I guess Furd couldn't maintain quality parts... you tell me how this is the same starter? bet I'll be lucky to get 6 months out of it.. look how stout the old one was... it starts ok, but time will tell..

Is that new one a gear reduction one like the old one?

doesn't appear to be.. I'm pretty annoyed, mainly at myself..... i mean it's a ford box.. while the pic is of the starter, i just assumed that it would be the same as what was in there being in the "OEM Ford" section of the site...

i didn't bother doing any "gear reduction" searches, I don't even know if i can get the one on the left in the pic...

well, duh...

i always thought PM to be a bit overpriced... but that review guy says their gear reduction is the best one hands down... and it's like $230 to me...

so, it's loaded in the cart, and waiting for a hint of a fug up... I'd like to pick it up as the backup for when this dies... but I'm gonna wait a few weeks at least.. moms tablet died today so I'm gonna pop for an early x-mas gift this week..

oh, here's a laugh... the 2 upper 10mm bolts where gone... :eek1: good job Rog! :haha: and the last wasn't tough to break free... had to go to Ace...

it prolly would have been a flywheel trainwreck if the solenoid hadn't failed when it did..

Maybe get the one you took off rebuilt? We have an old timer here that would have that done in 40 minutes and be better than any reman, I’ll miss him when he’s gone

i'll keep the core fo sure in case I come across a reasonable way to do that... but they are rarer than machine shops around here any more.... good luck finding a radiator shop anymore...

Sad… I wish the good old days could make a comeback.

Everyone bitching about the environment. But we can’t fix anything, just buy new shit parts and replace them early with more new shit parts. :doah:

Sorry. rant post…

Manasquan Generator up in Belmar is still open.

Theres a place near me that rebuilds gens/alt/starters that you bring in... maybe you can get your original rebuilt.
