Ryoken's 96 Furd twofiddy

I'm a form over function guy.. Smoked would look more complete, but will loose a lot of light... UNLESS, you take some smoked light housings and put projectors in them...

They will never seal.... every aftermarket set of lights i've ever sold get water in them. Doesn't matter if they're OE replacements, Recon's, K-source, whoever. For some reason the glue they use or however they put them together sucks.

great info....

i do like how the front looks... i'm a fan of the amber lenses... that's why i did it..

i may try fresh all-amber lens up top at some point to see if it looks more match-y and good... cheap enough at $35... I have it so they just unplug... i just got into the "blacking out" moldings, etc mode and went for that.. and i do like the roof as is..

i think it would look good either way up front.. but I'm definitely leery of leaking and poor performance.. tho, I don't really do much night driving to begin with.. I'm old....

thanks for the input boys, I always value your thoughts....

hopefully we'll be segwaying our interest back to Mutt in the "not too distant" future... ;)

so... took last, and this weekend, off from the rig after pounding a ton of projects over the last yr..... I was pretty stoopid friday night, heat has been bad for this old marine grunt....

other than throwing a new clutch bushing in after 2 months yesterday.... figured out why it failed so fast... at some point he drove it forever with a fugged bushing and the pin itself is 1/2 missing... the rod end mod will fix that... so it goes up the list quickly...

good long road trip tomorrow....

but rotors, bearings and pads... that rod end mod... trans service.. rotate tires to finish out the summer...

even washed it and jizzed the rubber today... :haha: props to it for becoming a pretty cool ride... have had quite a few compliments on the rig lately from strangers...

hopefully Mutt will be in that spot, and un-diapered, in a month or 2...

.

build babble... so, it's never quite as easy as you hope.. was gonna try and finish up the heavy maintenance on this rig this weekend after taking a couple weekends off..... bearings, rotors, calipers, rotate the tires... but I'm looking at more time, and parts being needed on the brake system......

earlier in the week I lost brake assist a couple days.. pretty certain it's the vac pump crapping out, and not the booster.. kinda unfortunately.. :haha:

the booster failing would give me the opportunity to pull the pedal assembly and do those other clutch bushing.... plus I really need to get to that rod end mod.. blew out that new plastic bushing in like 6 wks.. luckily they are cheap and i bought 4, but.... it would certainly be the time to do it...

and it may still be that.. i checked vac at start up, and while it does make some vac, it's pretty lame.. i didn't bother to drop a gauge on it, but it only felt like a couple lbs maybe. and the issue doesn't develop till you've driving a while... anyway, ordered a pump and pulley, it'll be here next friday...

so, that meant i was gonna do rotors, etc this weekend and the rig would still be down till next weekend.. whatever, it's why I kept blackie around... it needed some run-time anyway...

well, was NOT feeling well yesterday at all.. all i did was block the front up and pull the tires.. had this headache and my equilibrium was all out of whack.. think it's stemming from this ear issue I've been having forever.. anyway, bit better today, so i got some decent time in between entertaining Kai...

went one step further than i needed, by pulling the spindle and mud catcher off for cleaning/blasting.... wanted to exercise that stuff so i would know i can get to the u-joints or camber bushing if I need to get back in there... tell ya what, glad I did, that spindle took some beating to get out... tape, block o wood, sluggo, repeat x eleventy...... NOTHING has EVER been apart on this rig... but the BJ's seem nice and tight...

at least next time i go in, it'll be a bit cleaner and quicker....

unfortunately, my Napa guy sent me 3 outers, and 1 inner by mistake..... so i'll finish this side up tomorrow and get the other side as far as possible...

oh, and I also decided to just throw calipers at it too.... the inner piston section is rotting apart bad..... rock auto here I come...

what a clusterfug today....

realized my Napa guy sent me 3 outer bearings, and 1 inner.. whatever, go as far I can go and finish it next weekend when I get the new calipers..

so ds already to go together this morn.. recon'd backing plate and spindle go on.... pack new bearings, install inner, seal...

go to install the rotor/hub.. friggin bearing will NOT go on that rear section of the spindle..... didn't think I needed to dry fit this stuff...:angry1: just a smidge tight, you could see it on the spindle... so now, i had to destroy the new seal i put in to change out the bearing for the old, cleaned and repacked.. it was ok, just the point... outers fit fine...

ds ready for calipers/pads... Power Stop coated rotors.. yes, i know smudges... ;)

wouldn't have finished anyway.. ps inner axle seal is toast....

so, during the week, I'll get all the pieces and parts blasted, painted and ready for reinstall next week...

so, it was another delay when I realized the ps axle seal and u-joint where toast....

than got the wrong parts, yada... all ready to go back together.. driveshaft recon'd, parts blasted, primed and painted... hopefully by the end of the day tomorrow this rig will be back on the road and I can pull Mutt in this spot...

how Ryoken rolls.... any removed part gets the cab, etch, paint treatment...

ps shaft was HAMMERED with rust.. never been apart... took me 2 hrs just to get the C-clips out.... had to blast it all together, than the clips would just break out in little chunks..... anyway.... got the treatment and new joint and replaced the bad seal... i like to throw a bit of paint on the assembled joint, seems to help the u-joints survive a bit better....

rigs back up and running. couple trips around the block and all is well...

i had also done the rear flex hose during this project, as i suspected it was bad internally.. I had an issue with the ds back not releasing and nuking the drum.. after going thru that whole side , including wheel cylinder, i gave up for a bit and plugged off that line... 3 brakes... than i remembered about front hoses failing like that and not releasing calipers when recently it seemed like the ps was starting to do it too... nightmare getting the original out... but seems to be right now... never saw it with a back hose before, I'll have to cut that old one open and investigate......

only other project I'm considering this fall is doing the rod end hydro mod, which I have, combined with a new booster, master and rebuild the pedal assembly... I'll see on that one... not really in the mood to buy a new booster and master, but if I'm gonna tear it apart MAW replace the ancient stuff.....

decided on one last project here on this before the cold weather comes in.. gonna try and square away this clutch issue for quiet some time.. gonna pull the master, booster and pedal assembly.. do the shaft bushings and rod end mod... $150 for a booster and master.. if I'm going thru the trouble to pull em, they're getting replaced...

guess I should go out tomorrow and look at that crazy steering u-joint and see if it's gonna fug me... i'll do this in a couple weeks...

all that said, been damn fun driving it all week compared to Blackie...

so... my psychotic nature always gets the best of me... figured I would finish off the season full bore with a follow-up project to spindles, rotors, yada deal...

not only am I doing a booster, master, shaft bushings, rod end mod... but I said, screw it and bought the HD pre-bleed hydro/slave kit... it was a bit more, but has the factory heat shield and all...

the other is original.. while I'm not highly suspect of it's proper operation, it will be nice to do the rod end mod to a new one, while sitting on the bench, as opposed to in the engine bay on an old one..

next sat I'll get going on this whole ordeal... in re-looking at it today, I'm hopeful I can snake the pedal assembly out from around the column without messing with that craziness...

* a dollar to who can tell me where they hid the open door dinger so I can exploded it while I'm under the dash... * :haha:

holy fuggin sack nuggets, I am beyond ecstatic...... :saweet:

I had my doubts all this clutch pedal stuff was gonna work well... "been that way since new, yada, yada"... but I am glad I decided to just do everything, rod mod, including the new hydro...

it went from engaging an inch off the floor and fighting you to get into reverse.... to engaging about 3, 4" off the floor, maybe 1/4 to 1/3 up.. slides into reverse like butta now....

was surprised to actually finish this today, with some pooch park runs intermixed too... probably 5 to 6 hrs... but i did have the hydro shaft/rod end fitted going into the weekend already...

the pedal assembly can be taken out with the column in, barely....

freshly rebuilt, you can see the one toasty bushing lower right... and the new modded hydro rod above that...

you get a new lever so it will make it's own, new knurl cuts from the end of the shaft...

here was all that installed... I decide to keep the "clutch engagement" switch... I was gonna bypass it, but didn't want to bother and pin it out/splice..

the pre-bleed hydro master was the way to go.....

oh, and $20, I threw on new taillight lens too.... old where hammered oxidized... make the rig feel good about itself for a while.... ;) hopefully I wont be touching it for a few yrs now....

I can't wait to make my boss drive it around the parking lot monday..... :haha:

so. I wanna hopefully close off this miniscule thread for a while... that's a good thing... I'm pretty proud of the amount of projects this rig has gone thru in about 15 months.. it went from a semi, pretty hammered, all original mid 90's rig to a solid contender now... i'd be comfortable running this to Fla tomorrow.....

new rad support and all body mounts.. 2 new fuel tanks.. 8' of frame blasted... new shocks and mounts.. motor maintenance and vac pump... shackle/brackets... all new brakes.. clutch/hydro junk.. windshield.. tires.. pretty drastic visual change..

it may not be a Mutt, or over the top K5, but I think my efforts have done the rig justice... :deal:

Love it. I love looking at original pics and new pics and looking at the changes and what I built. That’s quite an accomplishment you did.
