Ryoken's DIY Blast Cabinet Build

I just run my decent rigid shop vac, stock filter.. seems to work fine... very fine powder in the vac, but no ill effects.... ya really don't get a ton if the vac hole is in a good spot...

I use the cab a good bit.. in binges.. just replaced my first gun tip in this.. went from metal to ceramic now.. I definitely need to add another light to the other end... but being I built it 4' wide, that's not surprising.. I'm also getting to the point that I could use a media change...

Once you have a cabinet, it's so awesome to just go blast something to paint real quick. Especially if you have a home powder coat oven. I used to do nothing but blast and PC my parts. You just feel like the adhesion is sooo much better. And of course the ability to remove the horrific monster that is Rust is AWESOME! I HATE RUST! I hope to have one again someday.

I run a 60 gal 2 stage Quincy... keeps up easy peezy...

Ryoken check out www.tacomacompany.com very knowledgeable on blasting has kits like pedal, guns, media and knows his stuff/anwsers his phone 95% time. I got his kit on my H/F blaster and it made world off difference now just need automatic tank drain and dryer for all water i keep getting in lines. Yes I have long length runs up downs and not black pipe it's rapid line 3/4 on a I/R 5 hp 60 gallon single stage :frown1: know need bigger and dryer not cheap!

Another thing you might want to add. Helps save wear and tear on your vac and filter. I build this for next to nothing.

Put 3" of water in the bucket. The longer pipe comes from the cabinet and the shorter one goes to the vac. Put the 45s in opposite directions, this way the air moves in a swirl giving the particles more time to drop down into the water.

Thats a great idea FORMUD. Can you tell quite difference in anything with that mod in place? Does it keep dust down better? Dumps far less into the shop vac filter? Other benifits? I really like the fact it grabs the fine fine stuff really well I assume too. You don't want to lose the bigger grit particles and have to deal with drying reusable grit though. What it is mainly in the sub bucket fine fine stuff or? Just curious questions, never seen that before. But it looks like it would work great.

It works great for both the fines and the bigger partials. I need to modify the outlet on my cabinet, I seem to be loosing to much of the basting agent. I'm using extra fine Black Beauty right now. At less than $10 per 100# bag I'm not to worried about.
The only thing you need to watch is how much water you put in, to deep and the vac sucks it up with the grit and defeats the purpose.
Also try and use the thicker bucket, the thin ones want to collapse.

I do a lot of wood working and dust collection is a big thing. A dust separator is a huge help in keeping your shopvac running clog free. Rockler makes a nice 10 gallon separator.

http://www.rockler.com/dust-right-dust-separator

Woodcraft sells everything you could want to make your own system: Separators for a 5 ga. bucket, blast gates, hoses, adaptors.

http://www.woodcraft.com/category/DC/Dust Collection.aspx

I would have bought the rockler separator if i had the room. But space is tight in my wood shop so I just made one out of a 5 gallon bucket. It's easier to empty than the shop vac and the vac keeps full suction longer.

Same set up as FOR MUD did, or something different for wood working?

had a hunk of small expanded steel kicking around doing nothing so I made a quickie blast basket for small stuff...

when I get some free time I'll weld up the corners and add some round rod to the top... but for now it'll do the job...

the blast cab works amazing... tho it definitely can use another spotlight down at the other end being it's 48" wide...

oh, and after seeing what it eventually did to my vac filter, I'll prolly do a separator when I get some time.. maybe during jan/feb... took quite some time, but man it loaded that thing to the hilt with ultra fine stuff...

whether I just spend $60 or do a 5 gal pail, i'll see... still works killer, but I bet it was beating on my vac motor sucking thru that stuff toward the end before I cleaned it..

There is really nothing better then a blast cabinet for cleaning up things to paint coat whatever. I sure miss the ones I had, even the crappy one I'd take over nothing. Someday someday. Stoked for you brother.:waytogo: IF I get this industrial space for a shop I'm looking at, I WILL be building one.

i going to mess with mine after the holidays. shop vac is pulling alot of sand. i want to add extra lighting, and try some sort of airfilter over the shop vac intake hole. got some glass beads (for blasting material)thinking it would make less dust, and was told to not over fill.

I wouldn't say mine is blasting material, it is such a fine powder.. but yeah, I need a bit of work on that end... I also need to get peel-offs for my glass.. I only have the original peel-off on it, and it's getting hammered... need to get a multi-peel type pack..

it blasts great, it's just the vision and filter need a bit of work... little tweaking...

I can fit HUGE sh*t in it tho! :pimp: :haha:

Same basic problem I had on all three cabinets I had. That seems to be the common issues with them. Just got to tinker until it's good enough.

@ryoken

Paul give us an update. I'm trying to run the budget for my shop when we sell our house. Trying to sneak a new compressor a lift and a blast cabinet into the budget.

How's this lasting?

Problems?

Anything you would change?
