Ryoken's DIY Blast Cabinet Build

@ryoken

Paul give us an update. I'm trying to run the budget for my shop when we sell our house. Trying to sneak a new compressor a lift and a blast cabinet into the budget.

How's this lasting?

Problems?

Anything you would change?

it works killer.... being the cab is so big, I definitely need another light at the other end, but I've been managing without, just kind of looking at it from one angle...

it could also use the 5 gal water filter too.... it works great for a while, but once the filter on the shop vac starts to clog up, not nearly as clear inside.... plus cleaning the vac at that point creates a dust cloud similar to the 20's dust bowl...

in the 1.5 yr's or so, I've changed media once, and changed tips a couple times.. the ceramic tips, albeit more delicate, definitely hold up better than the metals.. at one point I ate right thru the first metal one... but I've definitely used it a fair bit...

but as far as the initial construction I wouldn't change anything... very pleased with dimension capabilities... the side door has worked great.. the window lock thingy works great... the grate and subsequent small parts basket work awesome...

oh, the only other thing I will add is a little hook latch for that bottom door at some point... you really have to have the door for maintenance, changing media...

but on the odd occasion the siphon hose get's clogged with debri and the gun stops working, you have to backflush the system by putting your finger over the tip and backblowing thru the syphon tube into the hopper.... if you don't hold your foot under the door, it will pop open from this and media comes out...

You did a great job on that bad boy there Paul. It IS one of the projects on my list once my shop is organized, to build one nearly exactly like yours. :waytogo:

thanks Rob... :D I swear... I think back to the 35 yr's I spent hr's wirewheeling, sanding parts, etc and they still didn't come out super-clean raw, and realize JUST how beneficial this thing is...

Pretty easy to make the cabinet wider right.

I'm thinking wide enough to toss a bumper in.

Which from my estimation I might need to put three gloves in it and 3 lights.

Sound about right?

yeah, sure, I suppose that would work... couple things to keep in mind there...

the biggest prolly being that if you go wider than a standard sheet 48", expect your plywood # to prolly double.... iirc, my cab is 3 sheets... anything wider could be 5 easy with how the panel sizes fit on a sheet...

hopefully a single good shop vac will keep it evacuated..

also you'll have to run longer hose for the gun, shouldn't be an issue.. I seem to remember chopping some off mine on building...

also, I would definitely want the widest viewing window they have, no doubt.... or maybe 2 normal ones side by side...

you'll see on tp's site that the kit's can be modified accordingly... tho ya might have to order the extra flange and glove separate...

Yah I was looking at the catalog last night right before I posted on the thread

actually the other thing I thought of just now is 3 gloves prolly wont work well, you'd have to do 2 sets side by side..... cuz the center glove on a 3 glove would only work for one hand.....

I have also seen a couple of times guys made extensions on the door for longer things when the need arise. Just have to reposition and do a bit more cleanup of the extension.

Though realistically your size is something that I would be happy with for about 90% if the time

Lol that's true never even entered my mind

in a pinch you can leave the door open and drape a towel over the opening.. than just do 1/2, spin around... little bit comes out, but not bad.. I've done it before...

When I build one since I have space now it will be a wide one with a double set of gloves. I've had 3 cabinets in the past and I always wanted a big one.

Found my next project thanks! Been wanting a blast cabinet but too cheap to spend the money.
How is the inside wood holding up?

great question...

outstanding, other than the 2" x 2" frame right under the grate in the middle.. where it constantly get's blasted.. not bad, but there is some wear... if I cap it in sheetmetal, it'd be fine...

I've had to weld patch our blast cabinets at my last shop where a hole developed in one of the blast cabinets. Bodies were manufactured with 1/8 thick steel. Welded in a panel over the hole about 6" X 6" square X 1/8 thk. Thing will last another 20+ years.

Is the wood chunks causing your clogging?

well, I think they are very small pieces... i'll see if I can take a pic.. it's not so much wood missing, but the gelcoat got blasted off...

to be honest, most of the time it's probably due to moisture in my system.. I'm very lazy.. I have a killer quincy and a sweet Binks filter.. that is uselessly plumbed right at the tank and run the line run off of it.. I really need to plumb a system with a couple drop traps, than put the filter in... it's rarely an issue, usually a humid summer day, etc..

on another note.. my 1 yr old goodyear hose blew up at the end where the crimp is... guess it didn't like that 2 stage pressure... ghonna try a flexzilla this time and see if I like em... maybe that'll be a LAB™ project this yr.. work on the air system...

added a second flood light for this and tomorrow I'm building this to stop hammering my vac so much........

That's a pretty nice little setup. If you put a tube to drops to just above the bottom of the bucket. Say 4 inches. Then cover that with water, it'll filter a ton of dust out.
