Ryoken's Guide to Rust Treatment and Bodywork 101

ok, so it's like sec gens, disregard the bow comments than...... too bad the rad support is actually there, I often will mount fenders with just the back bolts to see how they will/can align to the doors...

It may be easier to do it that way...set the gap at the door...tighten bolts real good...then maneuver the core support to line up the front bolts..

obviously with your stuff all back together, that's a bunch of work.. just thought i'd mention it as it can be helpful.. as i often say in here, isolating the issue, eliminating a potential trouble spot..

as you can see in this fender mounted shot, no support at that time...

not sure how to lower the core support if it needs it...still got hood alignment issues after removing everything and putting it back together.

seems unfortunately your gonna have to go thru everything twice on this build...

one at a time as i've said, don't get ahead of yourself.. concentrate on a good fender to door gap only... hood alignment, support shifting is the last to be done...

try it with the support on with no bolts into it and see how the back mounting goes... if the support needs to go down a smidge sometimes you can grind/hammer the lower plate and tighten the shark guts out of it to get a bit more.....

if I have to torque down the core bolts in order to flatten the puck, can you, should you use some kind of oil on the bolts?

seems unfortunately your gonna have to go thru everything twice on this build...

maybe three times...

3rd time is a charm....Chrissie Watkins, Alex Kintner and the boyscout leader in the pond
1 barrel, 2 barrels, 3 barrels...can't stay down with three barrels in him...not with 3 barrels he can't....

eh, i generally can't be bothered, it's the tools your using, not so much the aid of a lube..

but Never-Sneeze is always good on threads to help prevent galling, which is always a potential issue when pushing torque specs...

8 more hours today and no luck...that fender just won't align with the door

the bottom of the fender is obviously out.. pull it off and drive the mount flange on the cowl in with a 2x4 and sledge..

I already did that with a giant crescent wrench...the fender bottoms out on something first and when I tighten the bolt it re-straightens the mount flange

I've looked up in there....I swear I don't see anything that looks like it is in the way. The fender gasket is the only thing making contact.

Do you think the gasket could be doing it? I figured it was soft enough to not be a problem....

something's definitely keeping it out.. maybe you can "massage" the inside lower portion of the fender...

When I remove the bolt it "springs" out about 2 inches away from the rocker

When I had it off today I ground down the pinch weld that runs verticle back there...I didn't think it was causing the problem because there are no marks on the cowl...but I ground it down anyway...it didn't help.

By "massage", I think you mean get the freakin' sledgehammer at flatten that S.O.B that's what I feel like doing.

I'm assuming it's "springing out" with the top, back bolts tight.

loosen EVERY other bolt so they are almost undone, than tighten that one at the bottom and see if it goes in.. .

Yeah...with the top back bolt tight.

I initially removed the fender and unbolted the core support. Then put the fender on and tightened that bottom first. I think that time it was pretty flat against the rocker panel...but when I bolted in the top it was still sticking out in the middle. and that was with only the back bottom and back top bolts in....no core support bolts or any other bolts

do that again, but this time when you tighten that bottom bolt first you need to make sure it is pulled all the way down.. you may even wanna hog the hole out a tad.. by hard mounting that as low as possible, it wont want to bow out as much in the middle... instead you'll somewhat be stretching it flat once the top is tight....

another day of trial and error that was all error.....

I will try again tomorrow....kind of wish I had kept those aftermarket fenders so I had a "second opinion" on this fitting.

I was able to move the core support some more towards the passenger side with the bolts out of it.
I was able to get the hood gaps "even" again, although they are still large gaps...3/8" on each side.
