Ryoken's Guide to Rust Treatment and Bodywork 101

Cause you chose to re-build an old truck. I often tell the wife, i wish i would have gotten into action figures or stamp collecting rather than this fate worse than death that i call, "me liking trucks".

it's cool...my Blazer is the talk of the body shop...they tell me that everybody that comes to the shop comments on it.

 ahhhh... you guys...

that's my prime.... sure.. a 68 is sweet in it's cut.. it's the perfect x-over lines from the square bodied 67's, and the swooped qrter-sail of the 70 and later sail/roof lines...  :haha: trust me, my bud's built a few...

any yr Chevelle can be propped as the best body ever...

I do love a 70 to 72.. had my 70 SS.. couple 71 and 72's... great front clip...

chevelle70.jpg

but I'll hold to my 69 is pretty top o" "chevelle" list bodyline-wise.. it's the true, first swoopy sail model...

tho, a 70 LS6 package is the known, #1 muscle car of all time... over a 426 hemi Cuda.... :doah:

OK...crazy day...went to the lot took the hood...took it to the paint shop...got sidetracked when i saw my Blazer with its wheels back on it and parked in the parking lot...anyway, back to the hell

They showed me the repop hood...man it was perfect...except that butt ugly front end...I told them I just couldn't do it...so they unloaded the hood

I go over to the blazer which is now blocked in 400 grit. It will be painted next week.

Walk back to the hood and tell the bodyman I am sorry I have to do that to him but I cannot put that hood on my Blazer and then we walk over and look at the used hood I brought him. He looks it over real good and says it is rusted out...once again...it looks ok to me...paint looks flat as far as I can tell....he took a wire brush and scraped the paint off the front and it looks like swiss cheese...full of holes...

I'm ticked at this point...load the used hood back up and take it back to get my money...they kept $17 "core" charge....

I get back to work...and start thinking...Desert Car Kings on Velocity...I give them a call...actually they are Death Valley Auto Parts....ask about a 1974 Blazer hood...guy tells me they got one in unbelievable shape hanging in the loading bay...said they found it on the yard and couldn't believe how perfect it looked so they brought it in and hung it on the wall...that was a year ago...

I told them to send it to me...so I got a nice original Arizona hood on the way...and as a neat side story it is coming from the television show parts yard...:eek1:

The yard is literally 5 mins from my house. :woot:

Wow! how often do you go there to look?

think I can trust that the hood will be in excellent shape as they say?

You better hope its an original hood and not a nice 79 repop. I can't tell you how many people are advertising genuine Dana 60 front axles on Craigslist that are actually 10 bolts. ;)

it can't be a repop...they don't make the smooth front in repop and this one has a smooth front...I made him check..I have to trust that he did...he even knew what color the hood was...and he owns a K5 himself...so he knew about the 73-78 deal

How much did this cost?
I told you I have 2 sitting here.
If I knew you'd pay shipping I would have sent you one.

it wasn't cheap...didn't know yours was for sale...should've spoke up...but shipping is major PIA

I had to hurry and get something done because I am holding up the Paint shop...they are likely going to go ahead and paint the truck before the hood ever gets here...just to keep things moving along...

Haven't been in side, because I will go to the yard next door. But I have seen from the street their yard is clean. :eek1: I would think with the reputation that yard has they wouldn't steer you in the wrong direction. :thumb:

Took some trim pieces by the paint shop today.

I had to order the rest of the body trim because they need it to make sure the trim and the white stripe will line up and also to drill the necessary holes in the correct places.

I found a new distributor of automotive parts near me called Auto Metal Direct (AMD) and they are in Buford Georgia. Prices are slightly less than LMC and their shipping is much less as they have a fixed price of $9.95 for anything that doesn't require freight.

I should have the whole set Monday. (Everyone else including LMC, JC Whitney, etc..was out of stock backordered on both the door trims)

It is blocked and wet sanded and awaiting the white stripe now...4 holes need to be drilled for the trim and cleaned up and it's ready for the stripe on Thursday.

The scheduled day is next Saturday...they aren't open but the Bodyman are painter and coming in next Saturday just to paint the Blazer. He said they are prepared to take all day on it and they are going to put plenty of clearcoat on it to allow for color sanding. They got lots of masking to do so it may take all day.

I figure to be able to pick it up that Monday or probably Tuesday...not sure how long it takes to look for nibs or when you do that. :dunno:

yeah, I like my masking and shop prep done the day before.. let's everything settle... come in fresh.. final wash and tack.. mix, squirt...

tho my entire collision painting career in my 20's of 1500+ car's was basically between 5 pm and midnight, Monday thru thurs, after an already long day of prep and masking... :doah: :eek1: :haha:

I am no longer worried about the paint job...I know they will do it right...you can see it in Tommy's face and the way he talks he is very pleased and proud of the finish work he has done on the Blazer. He took it for a spin to get some of the dust off of it (and he wanted to drive it) before he cleaned it out...he is "babying" it and he's proud of the compliments he is getting on it.

I haven't forgot the 1800 hours or so that I put into it with your guidance...but he deserves props for the way he has taken care of me on this. If it comes out as nice as I think it will the price is going to be a steal for a very high end job. That's my hope. :woot:

I know you don't use it, nor probably need to, but a funny story....when I saw it yesterday I thought there was something terribly wrong with the drivers side door / fender / rocker panel intersection...

I went over and looked up close....he has guidecoated this whole truck...and there was a spot he hadn't finshed and it is what I saw...a dark shadow that I thought was a bad misalignment :haha:

I would get that way over black paint jobs.... ultimate test of a bodyman/finisher...

bodywork as a whole, has built in guidecoats per se... it inherently does it from material to material..

I'm just oldschool, I learned 30 yr's ago what to look for in leveling.. whether with a longboard with 36, or colorsanding with 1000...

guidecoating works for sure, would never discourage it.. I have used the method on many occasion in various fashions.. but it has to fall into that "convenient/beneficial to the job" step for me, more often than not, just a slightly different kicked, fill prime coat to show a tad of color change after a glazing putty wetsand........
