Ryoken's Guide to Rust Treatment and Bodywork 101

Yikes! How fun huh?

I know nothing about the volvos but i have always liked them.

I don't like much of anything anymore...but the XC-90 caught my eye...they look good for a daily driver...I don't want a car and I can't afford a Yukon or Acadia

I have worked for Volvo since about 99. I can tell you everything you want to know (and don't want to know) about XC90s.

Avoid the 6cyl model that year, bad trans. 5 cyl is a good engine and trans.
AWD system is expensive to repair, no matter what part of it, it's expensive. Put it on a lift and drive it to make sure the AWD even works before buying. Southern states FWD might be more common?
PCV system is known to plug up and is labor intensive to clean/replace. In worst cases the oil pan needs to drop and passages in the block need to be cleaned out.
Timing belts need to be done at 105k. Interference motor, if that belt breaks, you're F'd.
EVERYTHING on that car is a computer module and needs a software download after replacement. Radio, heater controls, window switches all need software. Very little that DIY and local garages can handle, dealer only, which means dealer prices.
Light bulbs are a constant battle. These cars burn through more light bulbs than I can shake a stick at, and I know how to shake a stick.
Parts for them, in general, are expensive. And these cars get finicky over a/m stuff, specifically O2 sensors and spark plugs.

Overall, the XC90 is a solid, great driving, extremely comfortable car (I say car cause, well, it is not a 4x4 in proper terms). I would recommend one for someone who routinely brings their car(s) in for routine maintenance/repairs and is used to getting repair bills. I would NOT recommend one for someone who usually does DIY car repairs at home and is not used to regular repair bills.

Any more questions about it?

Wow, great info on the Volvo! Not sure if I'd want one with that list of what sounds like normal. I have a friend with a towing business who told me he keeps a running list of the vehicles he tows. He told me the Volvo's are the ones he tows the most and he said there was quite a gap between the next closest brand. Don't know how he figured it and not trying to get a brand name thing started. It is what he said though. He also said: "how do you think they're the safest?, they've got to be safe when they're not on the road".

will be 4 weeks on Tuesday...may get to take the immobilizer off on week 6 :doah:

I keep thinking about the Indianapolis speech in Jaws...when Hooper shows his scars and Quint shows his..."that's a thresher...a thresher's tail...skkeeeew!!!"

Then I get to show my shoulder..."those scars there...see...a bowling ball shark" :haha: farewell an adieu.....to you fair Spanish ladies....

a little update. I've been waiting to put this on...finally found a place to make me a tag that is embossed the same as the original state tags...it doesn't show up with the flash but I will take a pic later in the day light...
This is the original 1974 Massachusetts state vehicle tag...this is as close to original as I can get...in the movie the tag has "Police" in diagonal letters where mine has APD...I can't run it on the street with Police on it so I had to modify it just a little.
In person, it looks just like a real tag...the way I remember them...

Super cool!

How's the shoulder?

Today is week 5
go for 6 week chrckup next week, hopefully brace comes off...but won't be at 100% till 6 months.
not sure how much I can lift and when until then...guess they will tell me...

Up to you, but if it was me, I'd do like I did back in high school.
Really hurt my shoulder doing something stupid I don't even remember now. Probably a similar injury to yours, but they did not have the tech that they have now.

Doctor told me he would forgo a sling if I was careful and did not try to pick up anything heavier than about 3 pounds.
I put a worried expression on my face, and desperately asked him if he could not make it 6 pounds?

He asked why 6 pounds?

I told him I did not want to have to sit to pee.........

The nurse snorted and had to leave the room to keep from busting out laughing, and I really thought for a second the doc was going to hit me.

Finally he started laughing and told me to get the heck out of his office. Caught my father in a meeting with all their common friends and told him in front of them what I had said.

I heard later that it was quite the topic of discussion in boardrooms and bank meetings the next week.....
Everybody loved it.
My father just shook his head at me when he got home and told me he had gotten the report from my doctor......

What did you do

What did you do to your shoulder that needs 6 weeks of immobilizing ?

When I had mine done (rotator cuff repair, bursectomy, and acromectomy) I was exercising it the next day. Walking the wall and using a big rubber band to move it left and right, etc. That was over 10 years ago!

Since I live in North New Jersey I have access to NYC world class doctors, they take insurance and so it does not cost any extra. I did a lot of research until I found the best doctor. He is a fancy NYC sports orthopedic surgeon, who worked on many Yankee and Mets pitchers over the years, but I don't see how that would reduce healing time.

All this time immobilized is going to hurt when you try to get that shoulder working again. I wish you well, hang in there and don't skimp on the PT else you will lose long term flexibility.

Did your doctor explain why you have to be immobilized so long? Is it because he is conservative or did you have some unusual circumstances.

Without being nosey I am interested in knowing because my doctor told me that the fastest way to heal was to use it.

Happy Holidays to all.

Tom

PT started the day after surgery at noon...the reason for the immobilizer is so you don't do some crazy move with your arm that rips it loose.
The first two weeks it isn't even attached except by the sutures
At week 4 it is only 20%
At week 6 it is 30%
Takes 6 months to completely re-attach at full strength.

Don't know what maneuver this is....but I like the image
