Ryoken's Guide to Rust Treatment and Bodywork 101

I do wonder if that paint will darken as it dries...it is wet in that picture...but it looks like a different shade of color...

Major Announcement: This is a big milestone in my project.

The Blazer is in the paint shop. I was told probably 30 days.

I had the body guy lay his hands on it and he took a pencil and marked the areas that need fixing.
There was a spot that I could not see but he had me run my bare hand across it pretty fast and I could feel the low spot like it was a valley. I would have missed that one completely.

I get estimate 26 hours body work. That includes re-doing the door jambs, fixing that passenger fender bow.

26 hours is around $1500, but they guy told me that when he gets through with it that it will be slick and straight and damn near perfect like what you looking for.

He said "you did a hell of a job for green newb"...

1500 for bodywork / finishing
1500 for Chroma Premier Paint and clear

stoked for you... :waytogo:

Thanks Paul!

I just realized that even if I could have painted it myself, that I would not been satisfied with the results even if my paint had been perfect....I would have shined up some bad areas that I didn't even see.

I will be going back over there in the next couple days, they asked if I could bring some movers blankets to keep the engine clean while it sets...I said absolutely. I don't know if I need to buy new clean ones or just take the dirty ones I have been working with.

Body man is going to straighten my passenger side front part of door and take the bow out of the fender. I told him I spent three or four months on it and couldn't get it done. He didn't seem to think it wasn't anything he couldn't take care of...

It hurts my pride not to be able to finish it myself, but results don't lie and when he marked and showed me what I missed it was humbling.

I would gladly pay $1500 to have it balls straight....

I think the punch list was like this:

warp in left lower tailgate (I did that installing the tailgate by myself)
Drivers door low spot where the door handle goes
Drivers door front lower edge jutting out a bit
Drivers side Quarter up top where I mudded it he said it wasn't curved in enough
Drivers door jamb (gonna strip it and smooth out behind the striker and repaint and tr-clear so it looks like glass)
Passenger door jamb (same thing)
Passenger door three low spots
Passenger quarter where I mudded it (Was good enough for me, wasn't good enough for him :haha:)
Front fender bowed out
Hood bracing showing through gonna fix the hood
Gonna repaint the whole windshield frame
Inside of tailgate gonna smooth that water damaged mess out and do it right
there were a few small places he said just needed some more blocking

exactly...I feel the same as Paul here...nothing like experience!
I suck at body work...took me about 6 mos to get my Vette prepped for paint...I worked my butt off to get the new panel seams right, and had my BIL finish them...I was way off on them....he had the car finished and blocked and ready for paint in 4 days, we waited another 2 weeks then blocked it once more then paint. I'm REALLY glad I got him involved!

He said that overall I did a really good job...he said if I would work in the shop for a while I'd learn to get it right...:haha:

I just really cant wait until i can do a job like you or teck. I really want my burb laser straight and glass smooth.

I am proud of the fact that I actually got down and dirty with it for a few years...still got more of that to go with the interior.

But I can tell that they respected me for what I did and didn't talk to me like I was a tourist or something.

It feels good to have done what I was able to do, all with Paul's guidance of course. I told them that I may not have done a professional finish, but I certainly used professional products and I had professional advice the whole way.

for what you have been through with this K5, you can surely appreciate what an excellent example of body and paint work is to achieve!

I want you to have your dream blazer so bad it's not funny... :woot:

just wish the path went a bit smoother, but I guess hard fought wins are to be more appreciated...

hmm, might be something in that line I should take to heart.... :doah:

Thanks! Yes the blood and sweat equity certainly makes it more valuable...so much so that I couldn't help feeling some anxiety and fear of leaving it there.

Where can I get a set of "wheel bonnets" to make sure my wheels don't get dusted?

Been so busy at work I haven't had time to think...but it's the first weekend without the Blazer and I am thinking about it now. I wonder if anything got done to it? and if it did, what does it look like?
and the other side of me is wondering if anybody is driving my Blazer around :doah:
This is when you clean out the garage and maybe I will, but I also got work work to do this weekend.
Would love to paint the garage floor but that would be an enormous task...

Timing belt broke on my Ranger today...another expense I didn't need right now...
