I will be working at the paint shop tomorrow fitting all the trim.

hood still hasn't shipped....
 
interesting day to say the least...no comment on what transpired.

I ended up working off the premises in the blazing sun...came close to heat exhaustion...got cold, freezing and I got dumb...I literally didn't know what I was doing...I drilled a hole that was completely in the wrong place...I had to ease over under the little tree that was there and try to cool off...I couldn't do much after that...every time I would step back into the sun it took less and less time to get exhausted again...
I am sunburned and miserable...
but I got it done as best I could...if the trim doesn't line up later I will modify and use double sided tape.
good God it was hot today....:doah:

What work did you end up having the shop do? Did they do any blocking and sanding work?

When I get the patch panels welding into the K5 I'm going to hit it with the green zinc and then just pass it over to the body shop for every thing else. blocking, sanding, priming if needed and final paint

Yeah...I got it to what I thought was 99% ready for a final wetsand and paint.

When the bodyman looked it over he found some low spots that I missed. After his assessment I figure I had it a little more than 90% done.
None of his work involved welding...he actually took off some of my filler on that passenger quarter....the rest was panel misalignment and several low spots I couldn't see with my eyes...and then the hood...warped by the sandblaster I took it to, I had trouble with the braces showing through if you remember...I thought I fixed that, be he thought it was better to replace the hood.

It has taken so long because he took on the job himself...he had to finish insurance work and all other jobs first. If he had had a whole day to work on it he would have been finished in 2 days. He finished the entire drivers side and tailgate on July 4th...took several weeks to get the passenger side done because he could only work on it during his lunch break.

If I hadn't got it to where I did they would not have taken on the job...I am sure I would not have done it any different...I tried my hardest, gave it 110% and re-did stuff sometimes 4 times...I had it "finished" to the best of my ability. I was still slightly off on my quarter panel alignment...I just never could get that right...but he adjusted the panels and says that my quarters aren't 100% where they should be, but I can't see it.

Both sides are straight all the way down their lengths...he says the drivers side quarter sags just a little on the rear. I don't doubt that because if you look back in this thread you will see that it gave me fits...I would not fit no matter what I did...I ended up busting the welds loose and trying to reposition it 4 different times...it was a misfitting aftermarket panel as best I can tell.

Those quarter replacements were just a little above my experience level...add to it the fact the panels would not fit right out of the box.

so, with all that said, it may be preferable to take your truck to them before you shoot fill primer on it so they can see what you did and they won't have to sand it back off.
 
good advice. I would like to do 100% but realize that is not possible. I can't shoot paint because I'm so close to the neighbors cars. There is a guy about 2miles away that has a paint booth at his house. He did some insurance painting on a car some years ago. I was not to impressed with his work. I'm still not sure where I will take it. I called some shops and they say the won't even touch it. I may have to go back to the same guy if I don't find someone else. I called shop down south that will take the work. The quote was 15K to do everything. Yikes!

That's exactly what I ran into when I first got mine...nobody wanted to touch it...I had estimates around $10,000

Then after I did all the other work myself they didn't want to touch it because they "didn't know what I did". Thankfully with all of the help I got here on the forum, Ryoken particularly, I learned what to use and used professional products and learned the language...it made all the difference in the world...when I was able to take it somewhere and talk to them in shop talk where they knew I knew what I was talking about they knew I used pro stuff. I also had thousands of photos to show them the steps.

I really didn't have a choice but to do it myself and learn...now I am very glad I did....I may not be great at it but my work was good enough to get it to the point of getting it finished.

Remember, I have a good amount of distance from my neighbors cars and I still got complaints about the booth and the smell.
 
Wow! I thought the 15K was a joke but maybe that is about right then to do all body work on the k5. The shop seams to be A+, they work on classic muscle cars and trucks.

Neighbors cars are about two car lengths away. There are two paint booths in the Seattle area that can be rented by the weekend. I could hire several body guys to help. Maybe the first weekend would be painting the primer, blocking and sanding. Then the second weekend would be the final paint.

All I could do at home is welding, welding primer and some zinc spray primer. Also body fitment. I've picked up NOS GM fenders, doors and rockers. Those parts are mint. I'm doing a frame on restoration/ restore.
 
"amarillo by morning"....my hood is in Amarillo headed this way...should be here by Thursday.
