Shady's Crew cab short bed project (SOLD)

with the timing set so it at least touches the tab I get an off Idle stumble. I have to advance it beyond the tab to make it go away. Do I lean the Idle mixture to cure that?:dunno:

the PO had it hooked up to constant vaccum port. I moved it to a variable. I may move it back and try it:dunno: I'm buying a full street fire setup from MSD when I get a chance so I'll try more till then.

well i guess this thing wont let me rest just yet. GF tried to drive it and dropped the rear drive shaft right in the driveway. still aint figured out how

Disconnect the vacuum advance, rev it up to 3 - 4k, set the timing at 34 degrees, then hook the vacuum advance back up (to full manifold vacuum). Make sure you dont have any vacuum leaks or it will give you a hesitation.

Looks to me like teh UJ bolts were loose as much galling as you have in the yoke...?

I dont know how to read it at 34. timing tab goes to 8. if I go much farther than its at its a biatch to start. As far as timing and carb goes I think I'm gonna take it to the dragrace/performance guru across the river and tell him to set it up. its worth $50-100 to me. I've been messing with carbs and timing since I was like 13 learning from dad, but its the only part of cars that I could never get the hang of:doah:
The rear shaft is fixed. took a bit of inginuity to get the old stuff out and fix the holes n yoke, but it didnt take long. feels like I have a lot of slop in and out and spinning between the pinion and ring gear back there. Also found that my splines on the front shaft have a lot of play. the shaft will pivot in the middle at the splines about a degree or so. just dont feel right. I so need a 1 ton for the WHOLE drivetrain:D

You need an advance timing light Rick. It has a dial on it so you can dial back the flashing so it stays on the timing tab. Like this http://www.amazon.com/Equus-3555-Advance-Timing-Light/dp/B000EVYH7W

That rear shaft did look way loose Rick those yokes are pretty beat up. I know a thing or two about loose driveshafts and what it takes for them to let go. Not that I would ever overlook that on my own rig  twice

Advanced timing lights are nice, that's what I use. You can also measure your mechanical and vacuum advance with them real easy.

Or, if you don't have one, you can also just measure with a tape too if you want. If you have an 8" balancer, 8 x 3.14159 = 25.13 /360 = .069"/degree.

So 34 deg x .069" = 2.35" Make a mark on the balancer 2.35" ahead of the zero groove and set the timing there.

If you have a different size balancer redo my math and replace the 8 with a 7 or whatever you have.

I bought a craftsman advance timing light probably five years ago now, and is one of the best tool investments Ive made.

They are so much better than a regular one for tuning that its not even funny. Definitly worth the $70 or whatever it was.

thanks guys, i didnt even know them lights existed. I've been gonna buy one for a while. I'm glad I didnt cause I woulda bought a regular one. the one I have was $12 at harbor freight:rolleyes: I didnt think of the math deal either. It was even my best/easiest class too. The shaft looks like its at a bad angle. more pics of that later

underhood cleanup started.

I got to looking around and found a buttload of wiring shot. all due to the FI install the PO tried. I got rid of that crap:rolleyes: I want FI someday but I'll do it right when I have time. Right now its a carb'ed motor so it only needs a few wires to run. I'll do them riight for the time being. got a big hole in the firewall to plug, I think theres supposed to be a vaccum line running through there. That may be why the heater doesnt switch. I have know idea what some of them wires were going to:whistle: I just cut 'em out. I know one was for the low oil pressue switch and fuel pump. that should be easy enough. As for the rest:dunno::D I'm suprised it didnt burb down yet though. melted wires, 1/2 of bare wire on either side of various plugs/splices, some big bare spots just in the middle of random wires. Most splices were wires just twisted and taped:doah:

On a side note, theres a big possibility that the GF is leaving me so I'll have ALL KINDS OF TIME for the trucks:haha:. Exept for the trying to find another one part:doah: We'll see how that goes:popcorn:

Shes 18 and wants at least one kid the natural way. They can probe me and get some swimmers and I'm willing to do that(a few years from now). But I will not get a reversal and she cant get past that fact. Oh well, I knew this would come up when I got it done 13 years ago. Its a fact I have to live with and if she wants ME she'll have to also. I'm not gonna get all shook up about it. I've been prepared for this since she brought it up at the begining. What can I do ya know:dunno: I cant ask her to give up her dreams either. It may smooth out, but she's already started pulling away a bit. And I've noticed more of her stuff making its way to the pile of stuff she hasnt unpacked yet:rolleyes: I'm pretty sure. Guess I'll have to find one that already has a kid or 2.

sorry to hear Rick...she's seemed like she was keeping you busy

but I still like the fact right now I can do whatever I want whenever I want and don't have to listen to someone complain about it.:thumb:

It'll be fine. I'm still not sure where its going. Seems bad but maybe not:dunno: As I said though, I'll have more time for trucks. and this red one deffinately needs more time spent on it. Lots:rolleyes: I'll be trying to make it run thursday.

Sweet truck, I think my next ones gonna be a crew cab shortened with a step side box, something I've been thinking about for a couple decades.

That is one I've never seen:thinking: It could deffinately work.

Well as for an update, the lady and me have come full circle and its all good so far:thumb: Not going to make Daves this weekend but we're still taking a trip,,,,, Fantasy sweet:whistle:

As for the truck. I started stripping vaccum hoses too. Which turned into adding new plug wires, cap, rotor, valve covers, pcv valve/breather, etc. Then rerouting some wires for looks, I need to hook up the kickdown cable (found it looped around the dizzy:dunno: And finish puting the plug wires back on. Staying with the old plugs for right now due to $$ but it ran strong as was when it ran so... Pics to come sometime today. I gotta finish it up and get camera batteries.

I still havent even looked at hooking up the fuel pump wiring:doah:
