Stomis' 94 Street Truck - Snail Trail

Tease

So I got my gaskets, ARP head bolts, and cylinder dowl pins in so I bolted the heads up with the wife today.

Everything went smooth. Im curious as to one thing that happened though. Maybe some input or experience from others? As the motor had sat it rotated freely by crank no problem to turn over. It then sat for a couple weeks, I got the heads and installed them. After installing the heads I went to spin it over and was surprised at how difficult it was. Theres no plugs so theres no compression to fight. Also theres no rockers or push rods so theres no PTV issues.

As Im rolling the motor over Its getting tight in one spot then loosens back up and then tight again. Then all of the sudden everything is fine. Turns over no issue. Ive spun it after I installed each piece. So I dont have a windage tray issue or something stupid. I was just curious if the cylinder walls being a little dry could possibly cause the tightness from maybe a hung up ring? I just though it was quite odd that all of the sudden it let go and everything seemed fine.

Engine is looking beautiful!

Last time that happened to me, I actually had 1 sparkplug in, but it made me scratch my head for a minute. You could squirt a little oil in each cylinder. If that makes a difference, there's your answer.

Thats the thing. I did nothing and all of the sudden it seemed like it never happened. Im wondering if maybe the rings just picked the oil up that was further down in a cylinder...

Thanks btw.

Well that was dumb. I pulled the heads and found no problems with heads, piston, or lifters. So I pull the pan to check the bottom end, no issue.

Wanna know what caused my tight spot? I had a bolt ran in the back of the crank to put a pry bar on and hold the motor when I put my balancer on. It was threaded in just far enough to rub the back of the main cap but not stop the motor... Replicated what happen, on my way to the store to get copper gasket spray and put the heads back on knowing everything is sound. You would think I learned my lesson after doing the same thing with the can retainer bolt on the crank shaft...

Not much on this front. Planning on pulling the truck into the shop soon to fab up a new trans crossmember. Going to solid mount the trans and make a tube crossmember with bushing and tabs at the frame and big plate notch outs to make the dual exhaust easier. I also decided to use tabs and tube/bushing combos to make my motor mounts. I want to yank the SBC out and get the new motor mocked up so I can pull it again and burn everything 100% w/o the motor in the way.

Gonna order my roller rockers for next week, and maybe valve covers.

Roller rockers installed and lashed with correct length push rods. Wound up .100 over stock length like trick flow recommends. Im guessing their recommendation is for full roller rockers like I have. I read numerous reports that the .100 over stocks they recommend will bottom out with factory rockers. Guess its good mines adjustable.

I thought my valve covers were coming tomorrow but I left to install the push rods and came home to them on the porch. Nice blingy picture of the motor buttoned up minus intake tomorrow!

Some tabs and brackets will be here for fabbing the trans crossmember too. Holy **** Im going to fab something for the first time in almost a year!

Ive never been a "bling it out" guys but damn these valve covers are nice...

Gonna change that POS chrome oil cap for an aluminum one though.

Build a trans crossmember since I was home this weekend. Nice a light and gobs of exhaust room for the new exhaust. The bushing kits I had were a little over kill for a 2wd setup but eh I had them already. Also comes out really easy and fast and obviously theres way more room under the truck without a giant piece of plate under there.

that will do just fine I think .

my 85 2wd I just used a 1ton 4wd flat member and added a upriser to bolt the mount to .
