1989 v1500 suburban. Barn Find
Man I like your setup! I would have never thought of that! Is the T pin latch the only thing holding the arm in place? besides the lockout on the spindle?

The spindle locks on both spindles do lock in place. In addition I have the T-handle on the swing out and the camming lever on the lift arm. The crank is also ratcheted so that help hold up the lift arm also.
 
Center console showed up today. Managed to throw a mounting bracket together after work. Still cant believe How perfect that console fits between the seats. Also checked shock lengths and bumps stop clearances today. Found out my shocks are about 2" short and my bump stops need to be dropped down about 2" in the front.

This burb is beautiful. How much a pain were those wheels to build? How smooth are they running down the road balance wise?

The wheels were really simple. Total metal innovations makes a nice quality bead lock kit. I haven't had the chance to run them down the road yet but they all balanced out really well. The have small leaks but for the most part they hold air really well too.
 
Still waiting on the rear bumper and harness bar to come back from paint so i decided to redo the exhaust system. My original setup was solid welded with no crossover and dumped at the front spring mount. That setup had way to much drone in the cab and sounded kinda funny with no crossover. Plus my dumb ass used uncoated mild steel which already looked like it was 20 yrs old. So my new design was bolt on, stainless with a crossover. I bought the universal 3" X pipe kit from speed engineering, 5 ft of 3" stainless pipe and a couple stainless tips. After about 5 hrs of frustration I have exhaust setup number two! it sounds so much better having a crossover and having it dump over the axle takes a lot of the drone out of the cab.

That looks awesome. I agree on the crossover being needed. My birthday present to myself is taking this truck to the exhaust shop and having them add in a crossover and extend the exhaust out the back. I love the sound dumped but dang it’s loud.
 
Spent this last week putting the interior together and wiring up the stereo. I wasn't planning on running carpet until i realized how exposed all the wiring was going to be. I bought a passenger area carpet kit from auto interiors. Fitting the new carpet was a bigger job than i thought it was going to be but overall it fit good. Made a huge difference with in cab noise. For the stereo I bought the tuffy security console with the built in radio mount. to keep the wiring in one spot I decided to mount the amplifier to the back of it. The amp was about 1/4" wider than the console, so made a mounting plate out of ABS plastic. I went down the the local stereo shop and picked out some JL C2 650 Speakers. They were a little on the pricey side but nothing to crazy. My truck was the silverado package and had little leather bags on the door panels. the bags were in terrible shape so i came up with the idea of mounting the speakers in the door panel. I made a mounting plate but when I went to mount the speaker, I found out the magnet hit the door and the whole speaker needed to be spaced out about an inch. So i brought my template down to the stereo shop and they made a new one that spaced the speaker out. I had them bed lined and bolted them to the panels. before I mounted the door panels I spent the time and covered the inside of the doors with sound deadening material. The rear speakers I made mounts that put the speaker in the factory location but moved the tweeters to a higher location. That is what the guys down at the stereo shop recommended. I spent a little more time and money in the stereo than i originally planned but after hearing it, It was well worth it! next week it gets tuned and the rear bumper gets reassembled.

Was finally able to drive the burb home. Before getting home I had to make a stop at our other shop and use the alignment rack. I used a tape measure to adjust the toe but why not use the fancy machine to fine tune it. Tune isn't 100% yet but its drive-able. There are a few bugs ive been working on. Figured out the transmission issue was a bad speed sensor. That solved my shifting issue. But the biggest problem we are having is the Knock Sensors. It throws a code which takes the timing out and the engine looses a lot of power. Figured out today that once the engine gets warm, I loose resistance in the knock sensor circuit which causes the Low voltage code. The sensors are brand new AC Delco sensors and a new harness. I ordered some new sensors and a AC Delco harness. Hopefully swapping new parts in fixes the issue. Truck runs awesome when its cold. Regardless of the issues, This thing is a blast to drive. Feels good to finally enjoy the work Ive done.

little Sunday update. Burb now has 300 miles on it. Unfortunately I'm still having a knock sensor problem. Ive replaced the knock sensors twice. The truck runs great below 40% throttle, but anything over that throws a knock code and kills timing. I emailed a local tuner that specializes in GM V8s. They said they've ran into this problem before and there isn't really a solid solution. So after break in, they will see if they can fix it. If not, then they will calibrate them out. Fingers crossed they can figure out my issue. In the meantime, I should probably start planning out the Aux lighting, power, and spare tire actuator wiring. I think first thing will be to fab up a rear battery box.

Had some Fun in the burb last month. I was asked to stand in a buddies wedding. He also mentioned there was VIP parking for square body trucks. Was only fitting since his getaway vehicle was his 86 C10 Project truck. It made the Hr trip to the wedding and back without issues. Then, about two weeks later, It left me stranded in a drive thru. Shoutout to the employee that was taking trash out and helped me push this Hoss out of the way. Still working out some bugs.

Sold my 99 suburban daily last month. That put me down to either driving my 2014 Chevy SS or the Squarebody. I was completely sold driving the Squarebody to work but the asshole drivers of San Antonio soon changed my mind. The Lack of a good Engine tune didn't help either. Shortly after selling My 99 burb, I took the squarebody over the Nelson Performance to get the 5.3 and 4l80 dialed in. The burb runs like a top now! Just the tune a lone made that thing so much easier to drive.

Had some spare time today to fix one of the more annoying issues ive been having with the rear bumper. The original Latch setup I had on the swing out arms kept breaking latches. Since The Spare Tire arm is designed to pivot down, That arm was putting a lot of vertical strain on the latch while it bounced up and down going down the road. Ive gone thru 3 sets of different weight rating latches and ive had enough. A buddy of mine told me about these push/pull barrel style latches so i figured i would give them a try. In the process, I also added a secondary latch to the tire arm that pulls the arm down to the bumper. hopefully that solves my bouncing problem. Fingers crossed this setup lasts longer than 2 weeks. Also had some time to wash the dust off the burb and soak up some of this fall weather. Not a bad way to end a weekend.

Tuning makes all the difference
I couldn't believe the difference! Before I was having Knock sensor issues and was constantly watching my gauges. I didn't have enough power to maneuver in traffic and in the city that just becomes stressful. I should of had them fix my tune a long time ago!
 
Well Its been awhile since Ive made an update. Not too much has changed with the burb. Been putting miles on it and fixing little bugs here and there but for the most part, Its been running and driving great. With the holidays over, I'm hoping to finally make some more progress. Ive put about 3500 miles on the build so far. only issues ive ran into was clogged injects (which i knew was a problem), a leaking Transfer case and a dirty MAF sensor. The MAF sensor threw me for a loop but other than that, all the issues were pretty minor. 142245084_4374145049267716_3709292052758985692_n.jpg
