Superburb3.0

1989 v1500 suburban. Barn Find
My leaf spring bushings finally showed up earlier last week so I spent this last Saturday swapping out the rear axle. The springs I ordered were BDS 4" lift springs. I knew they were going to be too tall but they were half the cost of new factory replacements. The rear was 3" lower in the rear with the worn out factory leafs and a 4" shackle flip. After installing the new BDS springs and the 14 bolt, the rear was 2" higher than the front. I decided to disassemble the factory pack and mix the lift springs and factory springs together. After trying a few different combinations, I got the ride height pretty close to level. Its about a half inch lower in the rear but I still need to correct the pinion angle. I still have a pretty long list of things to do before Its drive able but it sure does feel good seeing it all come together.

A couple weeks ago I sent my Driveshaft out to get the Length checked and a new yoke put on it. While waiting for that to get done I managed to finish a couple little details on the burb. I finally made some solid seat mounts for the Master craft seats. I also cleaned up the factory roof rails and sealed up the holes in the roof. I will eventually make a full roof rack but I like how the factory setup looks for now.

Between the Driveshaft shop taking their time, Raining every single day I didn't work and the slow work schedule. I decided to get the burb towed back to my shop so I could spend my free time in a dry garage with my tools and actually get some work done. Of course the day i get it towed, the driveshaft shop calls and says its ready to go. Ive had the burb at the shop for the last week and I have definitely been making some solid progress. First I built a mount for the factory 5.3 air box to sit on. That was something ive been trying to get done for awhile. I bled the brakes and went through and re torqued all of the suspension. Next was bumpers. For the front bumper, Ive been wanting to keep the factory look but tuck a winch behind it. There was one thing I couldn't get over and that was the fender and bumper line from the side. The bumper stuck down almost 4" past where I cut the fender. So I threw some tape on the bumper and started to brainstorm different ways to cut the factory bumper to match the fenders. I managed to find a smooth facotry bumper in the junkyard that was kind of beat up so i wouldn't mind cutting into it. Well this is what I came up with.

Wow, clean looks, great work and it's different. I like it.
Thanks! I really am surprised how clean it looks. When I had the tape line on the bumper i wasn't too sure how it was going to look. but sometimes you just need to roll the dice and hope for the best haha

Started my rear bumper this week. So far everything is going pretty smooth. I've had this piece of 6"x 4" 1/4" rectangle tubing laying around for 2 years and I finally made it into a bumper. Ive been tweaking to design as I'm going but honestly its turning out better than I expected. This is my first time making a bumper from scratch so i'm learning a lot in the process. This bumper will have two separate swing out arms. one dedicated to the spare, the other for Gas cans or cooler.

Looks great, make another one I'm on my way down!

Today I took a break from the rear bumper because my new redhead steering gearbox showed up. Since they charge $150 core, I didn't waste anytime swapping it out. While I was there I finally installed my ORD steering frame support. I also Had a Cherokee steering shaft laying around from an old project. I cant remember what year it was from but I know it wasn't the shaft everyone says to use. The gear box end fit and that's all I needed. No more slack in the steering wheel!

Well this was a really productive weekend. Last week I spent some time making designs for My swing out tire carrier and B-pillar Harness bar. I ordered some parts I was going to need like weld on bushings, tubing couplers and other little odds and ends. First parts to show up were for the Harness bar. So Friday I was able to knock out the harness bar. This was my first project that I've ever built with tubing. I am happy with the results and learned a ton in the process! Its made out of 1.5" DOM tubing and with some tubing couplers from Ruff Stuff, Its super easy to remove. Now I just need to start fitting the B- pillar plastics.

Second project I started this weekend was My tire carrier. I have been Trying to deign a tire carrier that swung out and also dropped the tire to the ground. My spare tire weighs roughly 150lbs. The tough part of this whole project was to make a design easy to operate but strong enough to support that kind of weight. I was talking to a buddy and he mentioned a company that made a tire carrier for hummers that had a turnbuckle that ratcheted the tire to the ground. Only thing I didn't like about that design was that it put the tire over the center of the bumper. So I tweaked the design and figured out a way to have it offset to the driver side but still reach the ground. And instead to using the ratchet turnbuckle idea, why not find a 12v actuator to make it different. I found and ordered a 400lbs. stainless actuator but I'm still waiting for it to show up. In the meantime i figured I would get the pivot points and tire mounted to make sure my idea would work. Its taken some fine tuning here and there but all in all my idea works.

Damn! I love that rear bumper and I can't wait to see the finished tire carrier. I've always hated the flip down style since they are in the way of the back of the vehicle but the swing out style you need two people at least to pick a tire up or down. This is sweet!

Thanks! The flip down style is what i originally wanted but seeing how I have Barn doors, that was too impractical. So a swing out was my only option. After picking up one of these tires, I quickly figured out that I would need to have it drop down. I would be frustrated already to get a flat tire and I can only imagine how Pissed I would be if i couldn't get my tire down in a pinch. Should be getting the actuator tomorrow. I'm planning on getting the bumper finished up this weekend.
