Swapliftication of the '89 Burb

hydro boost still in process, still a pain in the bum. recieved my disc brake adapters from kert just in time to find a dana 70 from a van that i've been looking for. front axle done.

ok been working on the back bumper still got to do the side rails and ramp mounts for the dogs, as well as the tank skid and removable winch mount seen in the third pic.

Have you finished this? I'd like to see the end result...

not yet, still waiting for the snow to melt from my garage area.

pulled the suburban out of winter hibernation. finished the hydroboost. one of my swampers will only stay inflated for a couple of days and has cuts in the sidewall. probably need to replace that one. changed out the pedal assembly for a clutch setup to prep for nv4500. when i discovered the flat on the rf axle i also noticed oil coming out of the tubes. lovely.

planning on going to blazer bash this year. must restrain myself from tearing it apart too much.

update

went to go wheeling a couple weeks ago for the first time this winter, and learned a couple things.

1 the front axle bearings and seals are shot- totally wasted my time with that one. took out a u-join on my front drive shaft.

2 the rear axle seals are dried up and leaking so no rear brakes.

so i am considering a couple options.

A looking for a crew cab one ton for the axles and the body. dont want to put money into the 10 bolt. the body would be for my dodge.

B putting money into junk, fixing the rear seal and swapping to disc brakes in back.

what thinks ck5?

considering another option and adding stuff for later

swapping suburban body onto my dually chassis

d.d. machine doubler makes doublers out of 241 cases. can he do dhd?

2001 dodge 241dhd mated to ford np271 99-03 vintage with the non slip yoke. gives me a double tcase ratio of 7.3-1

-dodge np241dhd has 29 spline input, 31 spline output
-ford np271 has 31 spline input

-crawl ratio
7.3x5.56x3.54=143.5:1

-top of low range w 40" tires
2.7x.73x3.54@2000rpm = 34 mph

-top of high range w/40" tires
1x.73x3.54@1650rpm = 75.5 mph

that's what i was thinking. so far the wife hasn't said no, just that it would make for an expensive suburban. so now i need to convince here that it would take longer and be more expensive doing it the other way.

so let's see price list to swap cummins into old frame

$2000 for 6bt
$700 for fuel system
$250 for intercooler
$300 for radiator
$400 for exhaust
$500 for miscellaneous
$1500 for nv4500
$1500 for doubler
->$700 for adapter
->$700 for rebuild and 1410 yokes
->$100 for misc
$700 for HAD or WOODS driveshafts
$1000 for dana 60
$1500 for rebuild, regear, and high steer for dana 60
$500 for front springs alcan
totalling $10,850

price list to swap cummins frame under suburban

build a arm hoist
winch
build body mounts
use old rims and tires until i can do stazworks 17x10
$200 2" leveling kit
box frame with 3/16"
paint frame
$250 ford 271
$500 box4rocks doubler

sell quad cab $1500 or so,
sell front clip and bed
sell dually tires and wheels $1000
sell 205's and 203

hmmm this might work!

keep suburban frame for mini sub project with 4 door s10 blazer for a beater project.

Great work! Makes me miss my first real 4x4 84' Suburban. A 6BT Cummin in a sub would be great! Can't wait to see it! Diesel Power!

lost rear brakes when brake cylinder blew, installed diy4x adapters and '75 rotors calipers and lines off a 4x4 3/4t. welded the spiders.

with the rotors on intead of the drums, my studs are about a 1/4" to short so i need longer studs.

the way i routed my brake lines makes it hard to bleed the air out. so i need to bleed them off the rotor with a block of wood clamped between the pads.

called van at vanco power brake systems and got that info. great costumer service talks real fast. will be getting my 2wd steering box modified and rebuilt their along with high flow conversion for steering assist.

might as well give an update. welded rear in suburban sucks on the street. rear is too heavy. so that is coming out. it worked great in my pickup oh well live and learn.

igured out why the frontend didn't work, it's 3.73 and the rear is 4.10. i think between the four front axles i have i can peace something together for the winter. might even put the posi in.

the rear bumper has been put on hold for finish work for right now. apparently when i welded the top bar in it warped it into a frown. frustrated, wishing i had a torch.

haven't really done a lot to it this year due to playing catch up on some fleet maintenence. escort needed new suspension, clutch, starter and tires. dodge got a new turbo, exhaust, tires and throwout bearing. van new stereo head unit. and our renters in virginia have been jacking us around all year, finally got tired of it and told them to hit the road.

enough ranting, i did acquire a 70hd out of a dually. saving to buy the cummins next year.

rear end is back to normal.

found some info on the international dt360 on the interweb that has me considering this instead of the cummins. apparently it is the granddaddy of power plants pre cummins phenomenon. found in a lot of IH buses, mechanical injection. schied and hypermax both have messed with them. rumor has it they will support 2000 hp easy. slightly heavier than the cummins, able to support 500hp with stock head and studs. just found one in wisconsin with 46000 miles for $1150. sounds to good to be true.

Stopped by the salvage yd to see if they had any international motors. He said they had a dt46 in the back, when I asked how much he said $600. Went back to look at it and low and behold a first gen cummins. So I snagged that and went home to celebrate, watch tv with the wife. Then my house caught on fire and life was in order once again.

Yeah we are all right, not really sure how it started. Somehow it went through the fireplace and into the wall, which contained it enough for the fire dep to get there and put it out without using the hoses. Unfortunately because the house was built in 1912 they won't be able to do any clean up until the asbestos guy checks it out. Current estimate to get back in it is at least a month if no asbestos. The fire dep did an awesome job. Told them i'd bring them some smoked bbq when I got my kitchen back.

the house ended up getting gutted, we weren't able to get back into it until the end of march the next year. the mudwork, paint, and floor refinishing looks like it was done by a 3rd grader and our insurance company is still working out a settlement with the scumbags that did the work.

still have the suburban haven't done much with it, been to busy trying to get our house back online and organized. getting a babysitter lined up for next week so i can get the correct front axle and hope fully the sm465 into it so i can have a back up winter vehicle.

for the front axle i have a '75 3/4t dana 44, that i need to finish doing th eball joints, redo the seals, have a shop put in my limited slip i have had sitting around for years, and put on the 10 bolt 8lug outers that are currently on my suburban.

need to check out the sm 465 i have make sure the gears and synchros are good, redo the gaskets and seals on the np205, maybe do a twinstick mod to it while i have it apart.

see if the 3/4t rear driveshaft will fit.

it 's a big list we will see how much i can get accomplished. hoping to at least have the big components in by friday. i can do the little stuff as i have time.

that sucks about the house man, hope everything works out.
if you were closer id offer to help wrench on your sub.

appreciate the offer muddy sub. and like wise. have you been doing any smoking lately? i have gotten to the point i only do it on request or to pay people for watching my son. so far it has been working out. to busy with life to promote a bbq biz.
