Swettysblazer's 1991 K5 Trazer: ONE TONS!

87 and up are center bolt, but that don't mean someone hasn't changed heads on it (unlikely)
I've done like Rene' suggests, then put a smear of oil in the gasket that will seal the head...helps them come off easier if you need to in the future.
If you got tin covers, make sure the sealing lip that the gasket fits into, is pretty flat, and no knicks or dents...if it does pound them flat with a hammer on a heavy piece of flat steel to get them flat again.

Alright Dave thanks, I'm gonna do this on Thursday probably. We'll see what happens, this is the first time I'm doing anything to this motor besides headers so I'll be back with a status report hopefully Thursday night.

Also, I should be able to get valve cover gaskets at any part store, right?

most common ones available basically. aside from sb chevy perimiterbolt style.

Its real easy man. Just make sure to clean everything up good, maybe even clean the top of the motor, compressed air would be best to get all the loose grime off so it doesnt fall in the heads when u take the covers off, but idk if u have acces to compressed air at college. Also a wire brush and razor blade works great to get the old gasket off and clean up the flange on the covers. And be sure not to over torque the bolts, i dont think the torque specs are very high at all. On mine i just got them to snug and went like another turn but idk how the centee bolt style needs to be torqued.

Yeah, I don't have a compressor here. Even if I did, my landlord won't let me use it because she rents the garage to someone else  I'm just gonna use a lot of towels and the other stuff like you said to clean it up real good.

Not gonna happen this weekend, got swamped with work and homework so I'm gonna put it off for a little while. Also, it seems to have stopped leaking cause I'm not getting the burning oil smell anymore, so that makes me feel a little bit better. Still going to do the gaskets soon though.

I am going wheeling next Sunday though, and I am beyond pumped :woot::woot:

Went wheeling today with 496truck and some guys from his club...

It was me and Brian with the K5's, a lifted Explorer, a Rubicon, and a stock Wrangler. There was about 6 inches of snow on the ground and it was pretty nippy out. I had a great time, and I was actually really impressed with how my truck did. I only got stuck once, and that was because I started to slide and wound up in a ditch lol. Anyways I had a great time and it was good to get out and actually use my truck.

Anyways, I've realized that I need some things.
The 10 bolt rear has to go. I was a little nervous today in some of the spots about blowing it up because a lot of momentum was needed and it was a little hairy. My plan is to get a SF14 bolt and just swap that in. I don't need a FF14 or a D60, so I am not gonna waste my time and money to try and find one.

That's really the only major thing I can think of, besides a taller jack :whistle:

Thanks again if you read this Brian, I had an awesome time today.

Good stuff buddy. What gears do you have? If you still got 3.73s it may be worth finding a set of axles with 4.10s, but I can't remember whatcha gots

I didn't get any photos, but we had a Go-Pro camera so I'll see if I can get the videos. It was definitely nice to get out and do something not related to school or work.

I have 3.73's Adam. That's the plan.

Sorry to hear about the rust, its a noice looking truck otherwise though, hard to believe it can have a body that looks that good but have floors rotted that bad. Oh the joys of living in the rust belt :doah:

Yeah, it definitely sucks. I'm gonna get some practice in welding hopefully soon and then tear it apart this summer. Thanks though!

And then your gonna bring it to my house so we can fix ur mistakes:D just messin lol. Gotta get ya a bumper made too:pimp:

I wish haha. This is all pending if I go home to Jersey for the summer and decide not to stay in Providence. Maybe I'll take a month off and bug out lol
