Swettysblazer's 1991 K5 Trazer: ONE TONS!

Yeah, for how long? Not to mention unless you get beadlocks there isn't much airing down. There's a lot of tire makers that have scaled back on 16.5's over the last decade or so and more are continuing. Most tire makers don't even offer their tires in 16.5 any more. Just no profit margin in them.

16.5's are dying. For a reason.

Eventually the surplus military tires will dry up. When the HMMWV goes the way of the Jeep they'll surplus those tires out and then...? The M-ATV and any other vehicle that replaces it sure as hell won't run 16.5" wheels.

Not to mention unless you get some of the new Goodyear MT/R's or BFG Baja tires you're dealing with 5-10 year old surplus junk.

Meh. You can buy a set of stock steel 16.5" wheels for $20. How is that a waste of money? A case of beer costs the same, and you just piss that on the ground.

Not everywhere. When I needed a spare for Big Ugly in 2006 I ended up having to have someone mail me one from across the country. I spent that much in postage. Not all of us live where farmers just park their trucks in the field when they are done.

Brian, just a few thoughts I have and a few questions

Do you plan to stick with 35's for a while ? If you do then I really don't see the point in swapping to an 8 lug semi float setup, I get it that the set you found has the gears you want but here's a thought.....pick up the set you found, beat him up on the price as much as possible, then swap the ends from your front axle onto the other 10 bolt keeping it 6 lug but with 4.10's and giving you an 8 lug 10 bolt w/ 3.73's to sell. Pick up that low mile 6 lug 14 I found for you and swap the carriers so you'll have 4.10's in a 6 lugger and another rear you can re sell.

I guess my point is if you are going to go 8 lug why mess with a semi float when FF 14/ 10 bolt combo's are plentiful and about the same price but with the rear being much beefier and easier to do a disc swap on. Granted a FF14 may be overkill for your current setup but if you do decide to go bigger on tires the FF14 is ready but will need more gear ( honestly with a 700 trans I would go higher then 4.10's, I had a 85 K5 on 35's with 4.56's and a 700 trans and loved that combo)

Just a few things to think about :waytogo:

I like everything you just said, but only if Brian can get them real cheap.

I am with you 150% here. Basically what you said is what I am planning on. However, that axle deal I posted was kinda beat. Didn't look as good as the pictures showed. So, keep your eyes peeled for a six lugger  I don't think I will ever go bigger than 37's, just due to the fact that I want to keep the truck semi-road worthy (famous last words).

I agree, this thing is a budget build for sure.

I am well aware of that, because I live somewhere where that doesn't happen. I can only imagine how many parts I would have if I lived further South.

Pulled the t-case out today, and re sealed it. Hopefully that fixes my leak. GOing wheeling in a week with the CK5 crew again, so just doing some little things here and there.

Brian,'
the next time your in MD let me know, you can come by my place and pick up the 8 lug SF 14 bolt I have for free, bring a friend as its a heavy MF and i dont have my shop crane there

I think you can use the housing and install 6 lug shafts:dunno:, its needs new drums and brakes i know that

I remember chevy 305 saying that the 6 lug swap wasn't worth it. :dunno:

Nick, I'll be sure to do that. We will talk this weekend at Rausch :waytogo:

I think I remember him saying that too, right now IDK which way I wanna go yet so I am thinking whatever falls into my lap

It could be worth it, depending on what deals you get on the axles and the parts to do it. But in most cases, just get a 6 lugger and move the perches and shock mounts.
