The 2wd burb thread. Fixed!!!!

2wd big block burb tow rig
Soooo. My gas tank is still getting pressure.

Vent line from the tank to the charcoal cannister is good. Shot air through it both ways. Blew air through the charcoal cannister. Seems clear.

It only does it on long drives. 2+ hours.

My current theory, the exhaust is leaking and cut off right behind the catalytic converter. I'm thinking it's creating heat where there shouldn't be any. It's on the opposite frame rail from the fuel lines but still. It is seriously hot under the rig after driving.

The tank is trying to vent through the charcoal cannister, I popped the hose off after pulling in the driveway. There's pressure there for sure just not much.

Going to get a new gas cap. Just in case.

In the worst cases the tank will vent through the filler neck for 4 minutes. With enough pressure to prevent you from filling it up with fuel. Today it vented in 15 seconds.

So to review. Gas tank is getting pressurized under heavy load or very long distance driving. You can smell gas fumes when this happens with the windows down. It causes the burb to stumble and have a hard time starting.

Once vented all is well.

Once again GO.

Oh stock TBI 454 in an 89 R2500 burb

Is that air coming out or going in? It looked like the little flapper went in when it started whistling.

Out. With a fair bit of pressure and heat, and noxious fumes. The fumes are bad.

Also I'm getting 10 to 11 mpg in this. And have for most of the time. But when it happened on a very long trip ( 600+ miles) the fuel milage did drop somewhat. But I was towing do that might not have been the cause

I'd say leave the cap loose when your driving for now. You don't want to rupture the tank going down the road

When you leave the cap loose it will still do it. It's just nuts. I'm gonna drop the tank as soon as it's empty and take a look see.

I had this happen on my Blazer with no tailpipe once. Had a slight turndown after the muffler, but exhaust basically hit the forward edge of the tank skid. Drove it for months and months and never had an issue. Pulled a small pop up trailer on vacation once and same thing happen after a couple hours pulling a trailer.

Eric,

That is some crazy stuff. Are you sure a neighborhood hooligan didn't stuff one of these down your fill neck?
