Are you concerned about being able to see if the cable is spooling on correctly?

No. Reason being, when you're really stuck, it's goes where it wants anyway, even if you can see it.
Always respool it afterwards

I am thinking that the electron flow is not going to be happy and you may have confused the hell out of them!
If you would have used laminated wood, it could have given some orientation for the electrons to follow. .
