I spent a boat load of time researching fuel filtering, pumps, and regulators in 2010 when we put the new 6.0 LQ4 into the race car.

In short fuel injectors like clean fuel, 10 micron was generally accepted at that time as a good long term filter size. But since fuel pumps don't like to pull fuel that size filter needed to go after the pump, problem arises that pumps want somewhat clean fuel too. It was generally accepted that a 100 micron filter was course enough to allow the pump to pull fuel through it as well as fine enough to catch pump hurting debris.

The Bosch 044 pump was also considered to be a great mid line pump with good fuel supply and not killer in cost. It can be used as an internal tank pump as well. A quality regulator should be placed after the 10 micron filter but could be used after the fuel rails or before in a dead head situation.

If a pump is used as an external pump it really should be mounted below the level of the fuel tank so that it can use the siphon effect to get fuel supply without pulling to hard. I know people that have gotten by with years of use on a pump mounted to the top of the tank and I also know people that kill pumps regularly with the same setup. Very few people talk about killing pumps when they are external and under the level of the fuel tank.

Stepping into 2019 and potential for higher fuel pressures and better injector tip technology I could see the need to filter to a smaller micron size in a gas engine, however I doubt the aftermarket world is to that point today. Diesel injection is a whole other animal and 2 microns is the standard for modern engines at this time.

I'm a fan of filters with more media area so that they last longer. Funny thing is though that a partially clogged filter is a really good filter as it's catching all the small stuff but it could be causing too much restriction too.

I’ll be looking into this Brandon. Currently using the in tank pump that has the awesome sock on it

I would just look at putting a 10 micron on the frame rail someplace and call it done with that setup. In theory you may not even need a second filter. We have an 06' 6.0 at the ranch that doesn't have an external filter on it just a sock in the tank I would assume.

Most newer gas engine trucks do not have serviceable fuel filters any more. They are built into the fuel pump module in the tank.

Pretty much any gm gasser after 05/06 went away from the external fuel filter. And as much as I was shocked by that we really haven't seen any ill effects at the dealership for cars or trucks having an issue from it. Pumps fail, we replace the assembly that comes with a new sock/strainer and move on. I will say this the later model stuff with pumps incased in the fuel module do have a bit more than the sock for entry filtration than the TBI based pumps we are accustomed to on these trucks.

I'd rather have a filter on mine, but gm must have figured it out.

I like my Vette filter/regulator combo. Works but the pressure is fixed @58 IIRC. Not sure if that helps but I had AN fittings/adapters on my '68 LS

Napa filter head and a 10 micron spin on filter after the pump.

100 micron prefilter a cheap screen type serviceable unit is just fine, pump, 10 micron post filter. A 1pt 10 micron filter is probably good for several years of use before it clogs. No more dirty fuel issues.
I keep coming back to this and looking for a place on the firewall

Happen to know which filter you guys are using?
I ran backwards on 10 micron and found Wix 24006 or 33386

A carquest 86406 is a 10 micron diesel fuel/water separator which fits 1"-14 filter heads but it's like 9.5" tall the 86407 is the same filter but 7 7/16" tall. Your 24006 is 1"-12 threads and 12 micron for the carquest 89006 version and the 33386 is 3/4"-16 threads and 12 micron for a 86386. Those both seem pretty short. I'd nail down a filter head first maybe.

I have the part number for the filter heads. Dave and I were just discussing the merits of having this under pressure instead of suction and if the media would tolerate ethanol

I would not like to have the fuel filter under pressure around the ignition system. Just my preference. So I wouldn't want a large filter and housing in the engine bay. And down under the truck doesn't work for clearance.

I lean toward keeping it simple with a later model & readily available filter off a Tahoe/Silverado.

Hmmm good points there. What about marine application gasoline filter setups? They are rated to be in an engine compartment I bet.

This is where I wanna be. If not a spin on filter, I’ll get adapters to add the inline for 6AN

Just wanna make sure I can get it in Moab or at Walmart for $20. Always looking at that possibility of a highway service situation

I’ll have to stop by ORD and take a look under the buggy to see what NAPA part number that filter is. Our setup has been through hell and back a few times with zero issues. I wouldn’t hesitate to put the filter under the hood.

I just pulled the trigger on the Speeday 2.5" builder kit in mild steel. I am going with the Evil Energy 3" V bands at the Collectors and a couple of 2.5" V bands father back. Dual 2.5" into 3" Collector with a cat and then a Thrush muffler and a 3" tailpipe. Not sure on layout yet, but driver side obviously because of clocked flat 205. Probably dump in front of the rear tire. I went with the Stainless Evil Energy clamps because they have a machined lip for the tube to sit in. Seems like it will make welding easier.

I also bought a spool of Blue Demon gasless stainless mig wire.

I didn't buy a flex pipe anywhere and not sure if I will. With the engine cage, crossmembers, full internal cage I doubt flex will be too bad, but if I need to I can add a couple 3" flex joints at the collectors.

Don’t go out of your way for me. I just like doing the math.
Thanks for the input on the real world use

I’ll probably go with aluminized just because. I also have the longest flex pipe they make. It’s all sitting in the Jegs cart waiting for me to stop doing fuel filter math :haha:

My shipment should be in tomorrow. I haven't tried the stainless wire yet, but originally I was going to do all 304 stuff, but you get 1/3 of the aluminized kit, and I have spent enough money on fancy stuff for my wheeler LOL
