The restoration/modification of Daisy.

For the last month or so Daisy has done nothing but drive to the dog park on Saturday & Sunday mornings, about a 5mi round trip. That frustrates me, so I just ordered a set of Windstar fans... I've been told several times by several people to try them and not to give up on electric fans just yet so for $85 from rockauto.com I figured it was worth a shot. I guess I need to hit a junkyard to find a windstar to cut the connectors out of. I also grabbed a rear door latch (my door button has been missing for 15years or so) and a pair of window motors, my front ones are slow as hell.

It's ****in hot outside, Ive had zero motivation to work on the Suburban and I'm going stir crazy without it. It's time to do something, regardless of the weather...

Interested to see how those fans work for you. I can tell you they keep my BBC cool in 100+ degree heat with a GM 4 core radiator.

Hope those fans do what you need. You deserve a break on this.

Was warm here - only got to 107, but was in the 30's for humidity. Not humid like the deep south but enough to make it uncomfortable.

Know how you feel about not working on the truck. Was too hot the last couple of weekends and I felt antsy not working on it.

I have both Windstar fans activated by thermal switches. The first comes on at 190, the larger fan. The smaller fan at 210. I noticed in the summer trail runs and at Blazer Bash the truck would heat right up to 210, the second fan would kick on and cool it down until it turned off then it would heat right back up to 210 and do it all over again.

This summer I put in a manual switch so I could turn the second fan on all the time for trail running. Now it's perfect for the trail and holds about 190.

I was thinking if I ever get AC in this truck I would be interested in having that second fan setup to come on with the AC.

Also one downside for me is the Windstar fans are a couple inches wider than the Griffin radiator I'm running. I wonder if my cooling system would be better with a radiator the same width as the fans.

As long as you sealed the edges to the rad it should still pull the same amt of air.

pretty much how mine is on my 72 K5, the main fan is thermally activated and the secondary fan is on a switch.

I didn't get a windstar plug for mine, I just used the shielded female spade connectors, I am sure the plug would look better but I have not had any issue with the spade connectors

I don't think I've read about anyone not liking the Windstar setup here...

I think I read your entire build. It's awesome! I saw you have rear spacer/adapters. How thick are they and did you use any on the front? I'm trying to find some h2 wheels myself and I want to get them about even with the fender.

I don't think you'll be upset with the windstar set up. Mine pulls a ton of air. It's not 100% sealed but it'll suck a leaf to the oil cooler (and hold it) from a foot away. It also cools better at highway speeds with them on. People say it's not supposed to, but it does 5-7 degrees cooler in my case. These and the parallel flow condenser are the best hot weather mods I did.

Is it suppose to be hot?

It was only 107 or so today, not too bad.

Thanks man, I hope something in there was helpful. I'm running a 1.5" spacer on the rear and nothing on the front. Honestly I did it solely for cosmetic reasons. Though I did notice a slight difference in the feel of the truck, slightly more stable.
I think I'll be happy with the windstar setup. The fan assembly is much beefier than I expected. I spent a couple hours trimming the shroud today, I need to get some aluminum sheet metal to build a couple of mounting brackets and some rubber to seal things up. So far so good.

Not sure how much I'll get done tomorrow, going to shoot my first USPSA pistol competition. I might try to replace my rear door latch, the button has been missing for 15 years or so, you have to open it with a screw driver or tent stake. It's weird how you get used to something and just put up with it. Haha

With heat like that, it's hard to get going unless you start early. I figure we have 5 or 6 weeks until there's a break?

I like those fans. Looks like there's not a square inch of real estate wasted.

Yep. The semi-permanent-temporary fix. Very familiar with that.

So here's my progress so far. I've trimmed down the Windstar shroud as you saw in my last post and I've figured out a fairly simple way of mounting it to the radiator. I bought a cheap sheet metal brake at harbor freight and bent (or attempted to anyway) a couple pieces of aluminum left over from a previous fan shroud. The brake didn't work all that well and I had to do a lot of "hand forming" on the bottom piece. The top one turned out super clean, the bottom looks like I did it with my teeth.

Stay tuned for more details.
