The Shop Truck

1971 Chevy C20 with a custom flat bed.
It was pretty busy, lots of hot rods. We're at the brewery on the island, then we'll head back to the room. Looking forward to getting in the lake tonight.

At least 1 event sometimes 2 or 3 happening in Havasu every weekend. Sunday swap meet started last Sunday.
Is to bad power tour didn't use the golf course at London bridge resort, where The Run to the Sun car show will be next weekend.

I'll start with pictures. The first one is the mess from turning down all the high misalignment spacers for the rear 4 link. The Speedway rod ends were 2 7/8" wide and the heims with spacers were 3". The little harbor freight lathe did great.

Here's the trip report from driving to Havasu after all that work. On the way there we cruised between 75 and 85 most of the way. Water temps stayed reasonable, the drivers side sat right at 220 most of the time (it was over 100 ambient for the whole drive), passenger side stayed right around 210. When we got on slower roads, it cooled down a bit and would stay right about where the fans kick on (215). The power steering system worked flawlessly the whole time, however the pump is pissed off. I thought it was a fresh rebuild that I had as a spare for the S-10, but when we put it in I realized we had used it in the S-10 at some point, it's a whiny bitch now so I'll need to replace it. The reservoir we put on is supposed to be vented, but it doesn't seem like it is, so that may be part of the problem.

Thursday was honestly lame, it was HOT in the parking lot, we got there right at 11 and stayed until 1:30 when people started leaving (there wasn't really much to do but look at the cars and we had already walked through 3 times). We came back at around 3 to see what was going on and it was a ghost town so we didn't hang out very long. I never did see any of the "celebs" or their cars, I don't think they bothered to take them out of the transport.

Friday we got up early and went to the starting point, there was nobody there, we sat there and ate our breakfast we picked up on the way, talked to a couple people that were looking for the group too and headed out a bit before 8.

We caught up with some of the other cars on and cruised with them for a while until we got to Wickenburg and stopped for fuel.

We stopped at the first gas station to top off the tank and stretch our legs (and pee), then got back on the road. The rest of the trip was uneventful, we passed quite a few people in Wiickenburg that were stopped at various gas stations and should have waited with them to cruise with them, but we didn't :(.
We got to Firebird around 11:30 and parked, we wandered around to figure out where autocross was, then quickly went back to the truck and got lined up to run. "Autocross" was run on one of the Bradford Racing School tracks, you started at the start/finish line, made your lap and stopped in a stop box at the end, I'm not sure how fast I got going, but I know some people were hitting 100+.

They were taking 6 cars, taking them around the track once to see the racing line, then letting each car take 3 runs. I got in line twice for a total of 6 runs, on the second set Amber borrowed a helmet and rode along. I have a few videos that I'll post here in a bit, but the truck handled way better than I expected, I was the fastest one in my second group beating out a Porche Cayman. I'll get the videos posted up shortly.

The first video is "Big Ugly" on the autocross course, it was neat to see him throw that big thing around the track.

I think this was my 2nd or 3rd run before Amber got in the truck with me.

This was my 4th run, I drove poorly and almost spun several times, but it was still my second best run. We need to remember to clean the windshield and take things off the dash, the camera keeps focusing on the bug splats.

This was my last and best run.

We did take a few pictures of the show, but other than KJ Jones I didn't see any of the "celebs". KJ came up to us while we were autocrossing to talk about my truck, he really liked it, but thought I needed to hide the nitrous and make it a true sleeper. All the celebs cars were there, but I think they just got moved from place to place in the transport truck. They didn't even bother to take them out in Havasu.

I loved this K30, but I can't imagine how slow it was with just an SBC in it.

We talked with these guys quite a bit, I think their car has been on almost all of the Power Tours.

From talking to other people that came to do this from the east coast, PTW is nothing like the regular PT. We may have to make the trip to do the real one, although I think I'd rather do Drag Week, but we'll see.

I saw that ramp truck driving to Phoenix, on the opposite side of the highway I thought it was you for a second.

Run it down the firewall wrapped in electrical tape and then up from the frame rail underneath?

He recommended putting the solenoids on the inside of the firewall and running the hoses somewhere more discreet. At that point I'd want bigger injectors so I wouldn't have to run the fuel solenoid or lines though.

That would only do me good if I was gambling while racing, not something I'm interested in.

I'm just building a fun truck that does a lot of things pretty decently. Anybody that looks in the window and sees the Holley pro dash or the airbag controller is going to know I spent money on the truck, not to mention the 4 link out back and the QA1 logos on the front suspension. I love the reactions I get when it outperforms everyone's expectations, but other than that I'm not caring about the "sleeper" aspect.
