The Shop Truck

1971 Chevy C20 with a custom flat bed.
A new cam and throttle body have been ordered. We're camping next weekend, but I'll likely start working on it after we get back.

Curious...
Since your getting a new one, what were the specs of the old one.
Don't think I seen them mentioned when I read through it.

It's got the exact same specs as this BTR cam, although it's made by Smeding.
These are the specs for the new cam I ordered.
  • .618”/.615” Valve Lift w/ 1.7 Rocker
  • 233/250 Duration @ .050”
  • 113LSA + 5* Advance

Yeah that was a big cam... Too big for a 2600 stall at least.
I'm running a 2800 stall with a cam only in the 230's and my burb was still a pooch on take off.

We've gone back and forth on what power adder we're going to end up with on the shop truck, at this point I think it's going to be twin turbo. The Icon throttle bodies have some nice adapters for that sort of thing, so we went with that.

Some minor/major updates. Firebird put 2 more dates up for run what you brung along with a private test and tune in July (not sure they're going to get any takers for that). Unfortunately the first one is next Friday, I'm not sure we'll be ready for that as we're doing a 3 day camping trip this weekend. The second one is on the 30th, if we go, Amber will have to drive as I'm having my shoulder reassembled on the 17th.
The MRI shows I completely tore the subscapularis tendon off, major damage and the supraspinatus tendon is hanging on by a thread and I dislocated my bicep tendon. Fortunately they think that I will make a full recovery, finger's crossed.
They also released the Hot Rod Power Tour West dates and schedule today. It's in December, which will be nice, but it's only 3 days. Drag racing at Fomoso on Friday, no-prep drags at Street Legal Dragway on Saturday, autocross and road coarse at Willow Springs on Sunday. I'm super stoked about all of that. I've been dying to get the shop truck back on a road course, having events that I want to do all 3 days, and it's not going to be 115°F out.

Well, we've got the engine out and are working on the cam swap. Something I didn't catch when we swapped the oil pump is that there's no tensioner or damper for the timing chain. I know some LS engines didn't come with one, but everything I'm reading online says you should definitely use one on a high performance engine.

Thoughts? I've asked Smeding, but I'll likely not hear back from them until tomorrow.

I've seen both ways. Nobody seems to have a RIGHT answer.
But the way I think of it, it would prevent long term stretch better from high RPM. Like the weight of the chain over the top of the cam gear slinging at 7k wouldn't have as much room to deflect..... :dunno:

We didn't find one in the '04 LQ9, but I don't know what the higher power car engines have.

Does GM spec one for any engines with the supercharger?
My lq4 doesn’t have one.
It's my understanding that the early LS engines didn't even have the bolt holes to mount one. I know the LS2,3 and 7 had them and I think all newer models do as well.
I have the bolt holes for the LS7 style one, so I'm going to run one.

Old cam -vs- new cam. I was apparently right on my guess of the cam, it's actually the cam I thought it was, not a Smeding clone.

It doesn't show up real well in the picture, but in person the difference between the two cam lobes is significant. It's going back together now though, new damper installed.

A couple other updates on issues I've had. With the oil pan off I measured crank sensor clearance and it's within spec. I'm not sure why I was having so much trouble with my crank signal, but it's def between .020 and .040" clearance.
2 of my new Ton's plug wires came apart when we pulled them off this time. I ordered a set of FireCore and I sent my old wires back to Ton's. They're going to remake them for me as 10" wires and try to crimp them better.
