The Toyotas

I belong to a couple of Tundra forums but have found a similar mindset. They’re good for the odd technical tidbit when I’m working on something but I definitely have to do a direct search for the topic.

Sometimes I like to poke the bear and ask about LS swapping a 2nd-gen Tundra…

It’s really fun when they start bashing other brands and then you bring up the hood bulges flying off, flex fuel issues, no trans coolers, lack of grab handles, crap mileage, lack of payload. You can almost see the beehive come to life.

I will say that yotatech is pretty good on tech stuff at least for the earlier generations. Not real busy on the later stuff.

There are a few Toyota tech groups on Facebook. But it's primarily directed to techs, at dealerships. A fair amount of information.

How many people are ranting and raving about silly defects, real or just perceived, and then trying to Lemon Law their vehicles?

Maybe that’s just a Silverado thing.

The gmtrucks forum is a joke of that. The tundra forums not so much but there is an open recall for machining debris left in the new motor that has no fix yet and recently someone had a dealer deny them trading their truck in for it.

"THIS MINOR ISSUE IS BS AND I'M SICK OF HAVING TO DEAL WITH IT TWICE SO I'M GOING TO LEMON LAW MY VEHICLE LIKE THE LAST THREE!"

Wait...you've Lemon Law'd three vehicles already? Shit...I think you're the problem.

This was not the road trip I had planned for the day.

I started out early driving the Toyota south to pick up a transmission near Vancouver, WA. 1.5 hours into a 4 hour trip, the engine went into limp mode, lost power, and stumbled as i pulled over to the shoulder. Nothing sounded bad and it was still running enough, so I limped it off the freeway to an Orielly's parking lot and checked codes.

It came back with a likely bad coil so I called the wife to bring me the dually with the trailer. She made it down a couple hours later and we loaded the Toyota and continued down to pick up the transmission. Then another 4 hours home.

Chevy to the rescue!
That would be great if its just a coil and not something internal for sure. I saw a toyota truck like yours on the side if the freeway a couple weeks ago with the hood up. I said, you dont see that very often…

Is this common on Toyotas? I know VW/Audi coils start degrading every 50k miles or so. The owners manual even recommends spark plugs every 40k so for cheap insurance you replace the coils at the same time usually.

I’m at 75k on OE plugs and coils with no issues on my tundra.
It doesn't mean anything.
My Honda Civic 2003 was supposed to have spark plugs replaced every 100k and timing belt as well, i ended up changing them for the first time at 245k and they looked fine. Others might fail before 100k.
We're just lucky

I dig Toyota always have. I'm on my third Tacoma, now with a 3rd Gen Sport. Has spacer and block lift now. It came that way. First week of December it goes into to get the Bilstein 6112/5160 shock set up with new JBA high castor UCA's.. down the road the rear blocks will go and I'll get new leaf springs set up for the lift.

Stoked on the truck. I should have never sold my last one but... 3 kids with two in car seats was tight in that rear seat.

I do enjoy lurking here:

My new daily, got it first week of October.

I hope these 3RD Gens aren’t having items go out so early - mines got 108K with just oil changes and one set of brake pads so far.
Time for a set of plugs though.

It’s not a truck-truck but I’m enjoying this RAV4 Hybrid AWD so far:IMG_5136.jpeg
Bilstein is about to release a 1.5” lift and I just confirmed the speedo reads fast. Already told the wife bigger tires would fix that.

I drove a 2011 rav4 for over a decade. Reliable car for sure.

I loved my ‘19 Silverado but when an exhaust lifter shit the bed at 118,000 miles and 5 years old I was a bit disappointed. $1400 later it was fixed but what was next?

Also the RAV4 gets 36mpg or so highway and 40 something city. The Silverado with a cylinder deactivating 5.3 and 8 speed trans got 17ish. I drive on average 1400 miles each month to work and back and then on my days off I’m shuttle bussing the kids around each day.

The money we’re saving is crazy.

Now to start saving for a future K5.

Hahah.. I sacrificed gas mileage for the Tacoma. I figured Im spending so much time in my car driving my kids all over I want to enjoy what I'm driving... I've been missing my old Tacoma since I traded it in. Now that only one kid needs a booster seat. I'm getting my Tacoma back.m, which I enjoy driving.

Now instead of groaning when they need to be all over I'm like, yes I'll take you. Plus this Tacoma has all the Bluetooth fun, so my phone has all my music right there. My 2011 rav I had to keep a handful of cds in the car for music hahahahaha..

Having all the tunes from your phone plugged into the truck speakers is awesome - I haven’t listened to the actual radio in years.
