Made a trip from la to Havasu yesterday. I left @1 pm ambient temp @ 100.
Last week I removed my grill mounted stacked plate w/ 8" pusher fan. Installed a remote mount Derale 13870, plate and fin cooler, w/ 10" puller fan. Derale claims this cooler to worth 62k BTU.
I was towing an enclosed trailer,
Unweighed. I am guessing @ 3k lb. Truck had a bunch of crap in it too. All together at least at gvwr of 10k, if not a bit over.
all was good sat on line at Costco for gas. Heavy traffic on I10 thanks to construction. I15n start climbing gradually. Trans temps no higher than 180. Get to Glenn Hellen parkway, gets steeper here temp has crept up to 200. Truck by pass and off I15 use the old road, less speed and gentle grade. Get back on I15 for 1 mile temps still above 200. Engine coolant temp @ 190, oil pressure is @60psi. For info trans is not using radiator, and I have an oil cooler.
Use 138 to go back way into Apple Valley, by the time I crest the only real hill trans is up to 230. That was the hotest I saw.
As soon as I get a down hill or level cools down to @ 180 or less.
I stop at my brother's take a nap wait for temps to cool down.
9pm after topping off hit I15n ac on 55mph+ up hill to Barstow trans temps stayed in the 180 range. Hit I40 east, supper bitchen lighting show in front of me. Trans temps are good, ambient is @ mid 80's shut ac off.
Fierce head wind and rain. Wind so bad I was 3/4 throttle going down hill and only able to do 61 mph.
Estimate @ 50 miles in 3rd gear of 218 mile leg.
Now I ask you am I being realistic to want under 200 degree trans temp towing in hot ambient temperature?
During the whole 218 miles run after 9pm only crested 180 degree a couple times. There are 3 decent summits to crest and bunch of little ups and downs.
Almost wish I had never put a temp gauge on the trans, ignorance is bliss
Installed under bed at an angle, hoses on the high end
