What do you guys think?

Ah. Yes. That's right, Quads on all 98s. engine split on .5 right

No 97 has quad doors. You'll have to find a holy grail truck for a quad 12v stick truck. Or Ppump a 24v.

yeah, i knew 94 -97 are only extended... not as good as quad, but better than single for me...

but I am trying to keep an open mind as I'll more than likely be "settling" for less in one area or another...

98 quad 3500 dually 5 spd would be ideal, but not likely...

Ppumping a 24v is a better choice. Imo. Tjeres no settling. the interiors are nicer. And a Ppumped 24v is superior to a 12v. Imo.

but also the newer the truck the pricier they get... but I'll keep that in mind in my shopping...

I'm buying that white '99 3500 quad nv4500 truck for $3k. No deck.

wow, the 2000, 01's start getting pricey.. what's that 6 spd I see?

nv5600 '01.5 & 02 got disk brake rears as well. And interiors of the '98 up trucks is so much better than the 12v.

the 5600 does ok if it's overfilled a bit right? I'll definitely keep 99's in mind... how hard is the p-pump job? I've done big diesel pumps before.. I guess the question is more, what's a good p-pump cost?

Not hard exactly. Change some hard parts, add some custom parts. Swap gearcase and pump is the biggest part of it. Sucks cause you have to pull the cam to swap gearcase. That's a pain. But perfect time to upgrade cam, and stick one in that has the mechanical lift pump lobe. So you can feed the ppump with the stout OEM piston style transfer pump. Custom lines and injector pop pressures reset for new pump. Rig up, throttle cable. Were talking zero electronics.

You can do it from scratch if you have the parts. Or a few places like scheids diesel makes conversion kits with pumps, For some bucks.

Nv5600 is ok. Yes keep it overfilled a quart through the shift tower. Keep the output bearing wet. Strong enough. Way way better gear separation for cummins power band. But parts are hard to find now. Production run was short for it. They suck to overhaul, cause they're a frontloader tranny that weights about 500lbs. The G56 in the newer ones is the best 6spd for a cummins.

cool, great great info Luke, thanks.. I had read up some last week on cam swap's on the 12v's....

I figure I could get it done in a long weekend if need be... one thing that I'm not used to, is the part prices on the diesel stuff on a personal level.. feel like i'm looking up parts for the dizzle boats!

the amount of coin you can dump into turbo's alone, is one I've always managed to avoid.. till now! :haha:

Time to get in with BOTH feet! It's a sickness I've has since I was a wee lad.

Though I rarely buy anything new. Except cams, and bearings and such. All Hotrod parts can be had used for cheap.

And there really isn't anything wrong with the vp44 on the 24v, just expect it to be a wear item like a water pump or oil pump. Not a problem, you can change one out in an hour or two.

I've definitely had my dose of diesels at work.. but it'll be the first I've owned! :woot:

so for a 24v with a NV4500, that would be 99 and 00? when's the NV 5600 swapover?

this would be just fine, thank you.... :haha:

gotta have the stick... tube bed ending right behind the tires..... I'm thinking that mod, shortening the back, will be simple with no tank back there...

How much does a cam help on a 12v?

A place down the street does cams so it would be easy to regrind it

Don't give up on looking but maybe start looking a different way. When I was in the market for a diesel tow rig/dd I just laughed at what guys wanted for HIGH mileage 12v's and the '98+ 24v's were even worse price wise. For what some guys were asking I would just spend a couple grand more and get a newer body style common rail.
Anyways back to my point... most guys who post online know what they have and that they're desirable. The trick is to find the truck through the "grapevine". I have a friend that is out and about all day for work (he's a meter reader) and he always finds good stuff.
He found my '94 12v 5 speed 4x4. The body and interior were a little rough but it had 4 new tires and EVERYTHING worked, even the AC blows ice cold and I got it for $2,200. I'm into it for about $4k total now and couldn't be happier.
Start asking around, you might be surprised what you find once word of mouth gets out that you're looking.

actually, I do have a couple guys I should call to get the word out more... and one to call back about a clean one he knew about.. I'd like to think I could find what I'm looking for in some sort of reasonable shape for 6 to 7.... even if a grand of that is shipping..

So can you tighten up what you have in mind.

What year body?
Definatly a cummings.
Definatly a 5 speed three pedal.
Dually?
Crew or extended cab?
Any mods (bumpers, chip, lift, tires)?
Cost you want to spend and cost willing to ship?
Due date for when you want to buy by?
Mileage acceptible?
What if it already has a flatbed? Starting point for modification or do you want to have the box?

I know you have put a lot of thought and research into what you are seeking, and as you said there are a lot of what you are looking for coming out of Montana and Wyoming. I am here and travel a lot of the state for work. If you are putting the word on the street then make sure its a big street. I can get eyes on what you may have intrest in or give you a heads up if I see something. I already know a couple people that have what you seek. Your call. I can probablly get you pics and info.
