What the Scout

1964-ish Scout 800/80 hot mess Scout. The only redeaming qualities of the truck are the rust free body and frame. Everything else look like a crack head had a good idea and went half way with it. Swapping a GM drivetrain.
Lol yeah pb has one tons, lockers and 40s.
I bet 44s lockers and 35s is close ;) (only way to clear 37s would require a bunch of cutting on these)

I always like to overbuild so i have a feeling this will go that route if leah is gane for the work and funding.

I still vote for a Toyota rear.

If you wan to narrowing a Dana 44 is not a huge deal. Just have to be careful

Yup. We want this setup correctly and spring over to provide maximum clearance for whatever engine we stick in it.

@blazinzuk you seem to be an expert on this stuff. Think throwing gm 10bolts or gm d44 under this would be easier? Shes cool with some wheel poke....

Im reading "just narrow the axles" if that's easier/cheaper why not just narrow 1 tons?

It wouldn't be a bad idea to do so.

The scout axles have almost no caster. They will wander because if it.

If you take 4" off the long side of a Chevy 44 you can fit long side wagoneer axleshafts in. Plus it's a springover. That's still a decent amount wider than than the factory axles.

The scout axles have external hubs small tubes and zero caster. I'm not a fan. But you can mix and match parts put gm outers on em. Get custom shafts, truss em, cut and turn knuckles ( which most of us should be doing anyway) mix and match some parts and it's a lovely setup.

But might not be a bad idea to investigate custom housings.

One reason to just remain Dana 44s is tire size. Narrowed tons would be awesome but the reality is they give up ground clearance. I'd want to see 38s at least on tons.

The rear end I'm fine with out of a scoutII still small tubes but perfectly fine.

I guess my understanding of caster is wrong. I thought since we would be cutting and mounting new spring plates on top i could set the caster thats needed and weld on the perches.

I will call you before we pull the trigger.

It's metal so it could be anything!
But this is destined to be the new front crossmember.

Hopefully chopping the old one out soon.
(Once the entire house is no longer sick)

Yours too? Kristle left work sick, Bailey will likely stay home tomorrow. Sawyer seems to be getting over it

So I'm gonna ask. I assume your planning on reversing the shackle?

Eventually,
Right now we are focusing on clearing out the engine bay including relocating the steering gear box (at that point we will just gt a power steering box that attaches to the outside of the frame) and the front crossmember thats welded between the frame rails.
From what i read the way to do that is to weld in the new crossmember in the farthest forward position on the frame then cut out the old one.
I think its funny that the PO torched the top half of the crossmember off... he should have just removed it and moved the engine 4-6" forward like your supposed to.

We have scout 2 dana 44s now.... and.... some mudders off a parts truck i had and we picked up DIRT cheap rusty spray painted black wagon wheels that i gave the old polishing a turd treatment. We also scored a scout 2 power steering gear box.
We will now have matching wheels and tires that hold air. Will be good for rolling it around and honestly could be used after the rig is running.

Progress.... a little progress each week.
(Not bad considering we have the plague)

The plan with the front axle is either run it as is sping under as is or look into a ford or chevy 44 and narrowing it. We can use some parts from the scout axle in either of those.
With an ls swap finding a ford d44 with driver drop may make life much easier...

Thanks for the advice @blazinzuk

Too bad you don’t live closer. We have a driver side 44 and a 60 rear in our yard. It’s actually a frame with axles. I didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to it but I think it’s a 79 extended cab F150. It could be 8 lug stuff but it seems like it’s just 5x5.5 which IIRC is the same bolt pattern as the scout isn’t it? Either way it’s leaf sprung in the front. If this is something you’re interested in I can probably trade my boss some scrap for it. Not sure what the best way to get them to you would be but I wouldn’t want anything more than I had into it and I could throw it on a pallet if you cover shipping.

Anyway I just thought I’d throw that out there. If it’s something you’re interested in let me know and I’ll go get you some pics on Monday.

Go buy the axles wheels and tires from @TreeFarm and you will be done if you were to build a set that would be the set you build. As well as the stuff that you would put in them.
