White Phoenix

Building for Rubicon
I wouldn't be scared of it really, I'm just saying to watch it closely. Farm equipment is usually used for short periods of time, worked on and used again. It's a very different scenario than a traditional truck engine which is designed to just go and go.
That engine was in a bus with the sm465.
They also are very popular in pleasure boats where they run continuously but water doesn't put that much stress on it

This looks like some gov issue burb.. awesome.
I vote 454 just because it’s less work, prob will do decent mpg if ya tune it right and get the cruise rpm down.. and still have enough balls to do whatever you need anytime you want..

This was Rob's suburban, I got it from after his brain surgery.

Yeah, it's a reincarnation of a 74 in an 89 body :)
So trying to figure everything out and get the parts that I don't already have so when I have time I can blow thru it.
I would like to have a locker in the front, and I am used to having a lockrite, but I now have a little more money so I want something nicer.
A true trac would be the simplest and not too expensive but a selectable would be nicer.
I don't like the air locker (arb, ox...) I like the idea of the e locker but I read something about a weakness in the design.
I am not a rock humper or basher, I will not go bigger than 38" tires, I have never wheeled with bigger than 35" tires and will only use 38 because the suburban is long and I already own the tires.
I would prefer 37".
Having said that anyone think the d60 e locker will give me trouble?
Also the the 454 and 4l80e are running used set, should just plug them in and hope for the best or should I at least open them up and inspect them and freshen them up.
I will not do a full rebuild if it doesn't look like I need to.
I am hoping to get this going for the summer.

I have installed and like zip lockers. My biggest problem with ARBs is getting parts, although the ARB when installed correct are very reliable.

Ox locker can be cable or air actuated or electric although I think the electric is a custom deal.

Now onto the e locker. Not a fan. Have seen the carriers break . Also have seen it just quit working. Though I think they have improved the design somewhat.

Why the dislike for air actuated lockers Issam?

I deal with air systems all day long, my diff lock, air ride, air brake, even the cab and seats are air suspended.
I constantly deal with leaks, shaffing of hoses...
I don't want to deal with it when I am having fun.:)

It's a much less complicated system and with your knowledge of air systems I doubt you would ever have a problem with leaks. Even with the stock plastic lines. I'm putting a zip in a Dana 60 tomorrow. If you want pics of it

So you are saying even with my gentle driving and modest size tires, it's still a week design?

Looked at the ox, I knew the used to be cable actuated but all I found for the d60 was air, or was that vacuum?

So you are saying eve38n with my gentle driving and modest size tires, it's still a week design?

Three I had lots of experience with. One in s sas F250 running 37s another in a YJ in tons running 38s and one in a rear 60 in a ramcharger on 38s

The guy with the Ford couldn't get them to last more than 8 months. They would fail to engage. The YJ guy crunched the internals in about 18 months, the ramcharger guy broke the case.

I've seen ARBs leak but never fail. Zip lockers I haven't seen any internal leaks but they are much newer than ARBs.

The nice thing with the ox locker is you can manually engage it. The cable requires some careful adjustment and routing but is pretty reliable.

So yah if I found a screaming deal on an e locker I'd buy it in hopes to sell it for more than I bought it for.

They can be cable or air or electric. When you buy an ox you have to buy either a cable the air conversion or the electric conversion

Yeah I just found more info on that, you also get the diff cover.
$779 from filthy motorsports with I think free shipping. Not bad

By the way how is your schedule these days?
If I can have a week to work on it can I fly you out here for a couple of days?
I wouldn't keep you away from your family top long, 2-3 days?

So looked at the zip locker, it defaults to lock, disengages when air is aplied?
Like air brakes in big rigs?

My schedule is the same. Just have to find babysitters for the kids. Which fortunately is not a big deal. So absolutely I would be willing to come down and wrench with ya.

There are 2 zips competition and normal. Competition zips are locked until you apply air then they unlock. Normal zips require air to lock. In a normal zip if you lose air you will lose the ability to lock the diff

Oh ok, it did say competition.
I thought it was the only option.
