who is still running 6 lugs...on purpose?

I just havent gone thru the hassles of doing the 14bff swap, partly due to money, time and having to pay someone to do the fab work.

What fab work??? It is a direct bolt in. The only thing you have to change is a conversion u-joint, and I would hardly call installing a u-joint fab work.

What's the difference? When it comes down to it they are both semi floater axles with C-clips.

Size, the 14bsf is a beast compared to a 12 bolt. axle tubes, ring gear, carrier, bearings, axles, brakes, all bigger on a 14bsf.

The c-clips are what bother me about it though. Its not so much having to deal with the tire falling off because you dont have to worry about breaking an axle so much but the fact that the axle is the inner race for the wheel bearing.

Well I ran my K5 with D44 front and 12b rear with lockers front and rear, with 35" tires SM465/205 and a healthy turbo diesel 5.9
Ran it for 6 years and the only time I had an axle failiure was when I unlocked one side and didn't the other and was rolling down a hill and hit a root, the axle ujoint spit out the cap and the cap hit the ball joint and sheered off.
Otherwise I never had problems.
I did find out later that my rear axle shafts where after market, but don't think they were chromoly.
Fronts where stock and I still have them.

Ya bigger/longer wheel studs here and they make a huge difference. Before my lug nuts would hardly grip the factory short/tiny studs. I measured the knurl and ordered a set for the front and rear. They came out to be 3" long with the quick thread head on them. :pimp:

Why to change tires? Sell the old rims and order new rims! :p its easy! :D
Well 15" tires are the cheap ones, and to run 15" tires on 1 tons is not easy, 15" wheels are rare and will need clearancing the calipers which I don't like.:pimp:

Buy 15x10 2.5 BS 72$ each from summit ! No need to do anything! :D

if i had to do again,i would still go with the 14ff and 8 lug conversion 44 front.i blew 3 12 bolts and kept breaking studs on the front 1/2 ton 44.i like the fact that i have 9/16 bolts now and a rear that will never blow with the 35 inch tires i run.i have a 465 trans and had 3.73 gears with the 35 inch tires.it lagged in 3rd gear.i put in the 4.10s and it runs much better.i didnt want to get rid of the rims i had either, but with as many times as i broke the 1/2 ton stuff i couldnt see spending more on something that would still have issues.if you stay with 33 inch tires on 2.5 inch lift like you want you will not have a problem.

I have a 6 bolt k10 with 33s only broke one front ujoint. On the other hand I have a K30 and beat it like a rented mule (like truck pull it with a turboed 454) and I have yet to wreck anything but a drive shaft.

I upgraded to 1/2" studs on my axles after I broke a couple of studs. never had a problem after that.
I am building a rig now with 6 lug axles, but I am making a rear D60 full floater into 6 lug.:thumb:

Exactly. I am aware that it is bigger. It just doesn't seem like an improvement to me, you still have an inferior semi floater axle.

so to upgrade to the 1/2 or 9/16 wheel studs, do the rotors and axles have to be drilled out larger as well?

i looked into the rear 60 on here and it gets totally baged on and suposedly the axles aren't any stronger than a 10 or 12 bolt. seems odd to me, but i have no first hand knowlage of that. still a full floater with a bigger ring gear...

however, isn't it as much work/money to 6 lug a rear 60 it is to do it to a 14BFF?

funny, a few years ago i saw a early 70s burb in the grocery story parking lot that had a 44/60 8 lug set up. i'm sure it could have been swapped in, but it looked all factory to me, wasn't lifted, just a clean ol burb. was the rear 60 offered in the square bodys? i thought they were pre 73 :dunno:

and are you guys like me, peak under other people's rigs in the parking lot to see what they're runnin? :haha: I do it a lot, haven't been yelled at yet.

its not as awesome as the 14FF, but from what i've read on here the SF14 is one tuff axle both in 6 or 8 lug variety.

I kept with my 6 lug 12 bolt rear and just upgraded my axles. I've got a eaton posi and so far it has been fine. D44 front open. Mostly run dunes or fast desert pre-runner style so a quick roll and away I go. I like the fact the wheels are steel and take the abuse and the look is sweet as-well. I run over 500HP like I said with no problems

what year burb had the 60 rear? early 72' and prior trucks had 60 rears. Not all had the Eaton.

A 60 in the rear isn't that tuff. 30 spline shafts
And 9.75" ring gear isn't very big when you add 40" tires on a 6000lb truck, well.....you know what happens. Bang!
