1966 Chevy C20

I don't disagree, I think white wheels might be better.

One of these would match the look of that truck with some nice oversized but kinda period correct wheels. Steelies would be good but oversized so they look factory but they aren't really. Fatties out back and some skinnies up front. :thumb:

That's more the plan for the 73 C10. It needs better wheels and tires in the near future. The 66 will wait a while. Really my next big focus is getting it back to the original color.

I am trying to keep it mostly original. I will have to make some concessions. The big one is going to be the rear axle. For as much as I'd like to drive this truck, it really needs to have higher gears and you can't get those for the HO72. I'm hoping to at least find a Dana 60 rear end that would be a little closer to original. So I feel like the wheels we're talking about above are the right mix of vintage and custom.

Plus I have done things like the LED headlights and electronic ignition. But I plan to leave the SM420, drum brakes, and carburetor. I guess my big thing is that it's a driver and I'm not worried about driving it down a gravel road.

In regards to wheels, there was this pair of 66 C20's at the big car show. They are both camper specials and they have original 19.5" wheels.

His signs said those are original wheels but I didn't know they did 19.5's. I kinda think it would be cool to run those.
I have a d60 rear ff from a 70 c20.
It's now minus brakes.
It had 4.10 gears and I have 3 axle shafts for it.
I had plans to make it 6 lug but now everything I have is 8 lug and I have plenty of 14bff so you can have it.

Wow, that's very cool! Maybe I can figure out how to bring it home when we come out for the Rubicon June 2019.

We'll have to figure something earlier.
My offer is because I don't want to store it for another year :doah:

While I wait for the Sniper to come back from Holley so I can do anything with the crew cab, I decided to do some exhaust work on the 66. Put in @blazinzuk burb type exhaust only not coming all the way out from the under the bed.

Those are just temporary tips I had cut from some old exhaust pieces I had.

I chose Flowmaster 50 series mufflers and they are not loud in the cab at all. I really like the sound of chambered mufflers better. I had strayed away from them after having bad droning experience with my old K5 and super 40s, but after having good luck with the 50 series big block muffler I decided to give the regular 50 series a shot. I really like them. Quiet on the road especially considering I'm turning 3000RPM to do 60mph. But there's a nice growl under acceleration but it's pretty subdued.

Here's why I did the swap.

It just sounded bad with all those holes in the exhaust. Like the exhaust was blowing on loose paper. Now it sounds nice and tight.

I had also noticed a lot of trucks of this vintage with the exhaust exiting before the rear tires. After looking at all the bends required to run the tailpipes over and around the trailing arm suspension, I understand why. You either have to be real good at making your own exhaust or pay a lot of money for someone else to do it. This stuff I pulled out wasn't original and it had clearance dents where it was too close to the trailing arm and hit a crossmember in another spot.

I am getting ready to put a temporary exhaust on my 70 c10 with trailing arm suspension and I kind of was thinking about it I will just get them out before the axle.
I just need to have a muffler so I can tune it.

I was worried about sound level but it's no different than what it was with the rusty pipes.

Did some internet searching but didn't have much luck finding info on swapping out the SM420 in favor of a SM465. Anyone here know much about it?

My hope would be to keep the bell housing on the motor now.

Why? There is basically no difference in the two for gearing. In fact the 420 has a lower first. Better for burnouts :burnout:

420: 7.05:1
465: 6.55:1

The rest of the gears match. Why bother?:dunno:

Here's a helpful page. Maybe.

I've often thought a gear vendors OD would be perfect for this truck to keep it mostly stock like I want. I figure the odds of finding one for an SM420 are near astronomical, and the odds of me ever being able to buy one new may be even longer odds.
