1973 C10 "The Purple Truck"

Basic build
Anyone have an idea on the interchangeability of exhaust manifolds? The driver side manifold in the 73 is cracked.

I have exhaust manifolds off an 89 350 we could use. My concern is if the AC compressor bracket will still work.

You can see the crack above the flange for the exhaust pipe.

Other thing I saw while I was looking at the exhaust was this thing on the carburetor.

Was thinking maybe cruise control? Or is it to kick up the idle when the AC is running?

The only time they messed with with CK thing was 89-91, right? When they threw the V and R in there for the square bodies?

I did find it interesting searching for vehicles to see what people use for model designation, ie C10 or C1500. I found 70's trucks listed as C1500 I figure because that's the way they are classified now. I also found a few 4x4's listed as "C" trucks.

Actually every time there is a change in design, as in a major change like what you listed they screw around with the model numbers. If GM just made a clean break from one design to the new it wouldn't require a change. But like your example the GMT400 trucks hit in 88 and the continued to build squares as we know to 91. Then when the GMT800 trucks came on in 99 to replace the GMT400's they kept building them for a couple more years as the "classic" in both 1/2 ton and 3500hd's. Again they did it when they brought in the GMT900's and built the GMT800's for the beginning of the year due to the late intro of the new body. They just keep doing it. 2014 brought out the K2XX generation trucks in the 1/2 ton variety and continued with the GMT900 HD trucks until the K2XX HD's came out in 15.

It really don't mean much except for the guys behind the parts counter. Tell them you need something for a truck on any one of those cross-over years and they will be asking more questions. Mainly VIN, but they want to make sure which generation truck you are working with. Funny thing is the last time the General made a clean break between old/new models in trucks was when the Squares came on in 73.

Thus ends your unnecessary look into useless GM facts.

This photo is actually quite helpful for those out there that have purchases a rig with the AC stuff all removed! When i was looking into reinstalling all the AC stuff, I searched like crazy to see how the original AC brackets all mounted to the engine and eventually gave up and went with a Sanden compressor and custom brackets. This photo is great!

Also, that idle solenoid, depending on how its wired, can either be for bumping up the idle when ac is on (though it doesn't have enough strength to actually push the throttle on its own it's just strong enough to hold it at a certain point when you let off the gas) or it can be an anti-dieseling solenoid that releases to close the carb when you turn off the key (which is how mine is set up). If it's still operational, I'll take that off your hands! They're pretty hard to find;)

I'm glad the picture helped. I don't know if the solenoid works but I'll let you know if we don't need it.

My Dad's '72 with A/C had that solenoid as the anti-dieseling application. Turn the key on and just touch the gas pedal to get the throttle to idle position.

Subscribed to see what ya do!!

Hopefully doing more this spring. Waiting to put collector plates on it after Christmas is done.

We did get a Tuffy Console from @Shawn. The kid wants bucket seats and the Tuffy will make a good spot for the stereo so we don't have to butcher the dash.

Is it wrong of me to decide that I may turn this into my company vehicle.....

My current company vehicle, 2000 Tundra, would become a personal vehicle and that's what my son would drive.....

If the kid paid for it with his own money than no.

Now if you bought it, it's yours to do as you please. Kid still has wheels either way.

So the factory hub caps are growing on me. I still dislike the stance it has now, particularly how far inset the wheels/tires are. I'm thinking about getting 15"x8" front and 15"x10" rear OE type wheels and running the hub caps. Am I crazy?

No you’re not
The factory tires look like doughnuts

Maybe 15/8 with wider tires. Less 80s looking

Aside from the paint

Not much I can do about the paint. It actually seems like a pretty decent paint job. I am going to make a factory type white panel down the middle with some custom touches to break up the color a little.

I also plan to drop the rear 2" or 3"; whatever is standard using the longer rear shackle.

this has been one of my ideas as well for Sancho. I've also been looking for some mags in 15x8 or staggered 8's and 10's.
