1973 K10 : Chloe

1973 K10 offroad build
Finished the fuel tank by mounting the fuel filler neck/ hose. I had to get an adapter to get the hose to fit on the tank as tanks inlet ID is 1-13/16 and the filler neck hose I got from pick-n-pull is 50mm, no one makes an adapter for that, so I improvised. 1-7/8ths adapter to 2 inches , then hose clamp really tight. It solid.

Built the rear taillight harness today, got it installed from my junction box, with and additional wire set for a trailer plug, and the reverse light, with ground wire.
Plus installed my new to me(read: used purchased from @kennyw , the resident CK5 chop shop owner.) tail lights.
Also had Melinda step outside and push on the brake pedal. We have brake lights!

No pictures, but, my fuel gauge wasn’t reading correctly.
So, I wired in a “Fuel Bridge”, which made the gauge read correctly.
Auto meter gauges with an Auto meter fuel bridge. Follow the programming instructions to a “T”. The gauge reads dead on.
Very happy with it.
As soon as I can get some exhaust pipe on the back of the headers, we’ll be ready to start it for the first time.
I have a 5 gallon gas can full just waiting. Hopefully, this weekend.

“A grinder and paint make
me the welder I ain’t…”
I got the exhaust collector and “S” pipe welded together, then, bolted them to the headers.
No mufflers. Someone convince me why I can’t straight pipe the 496?!

If it's long enough I don't see why not.
It will be loud but you probably would like that

So, I had the engine running, sounded OK , very loud with straight pipes. It had 45 PSI oil pressure, idled at 850 rpm. All good, or so I thought…

I turned it off, ran inside for a bottle of water. Came back out, fired her up again, thinking I’ll let it warm up this time.
It ran for about 30 seconds, maybe 45 seconds, then a loud thump, and stopped cold, wouldn’t turn over just clicked.
Oil drizzling out the left side of the lower block, and stray chunks of aluminum, I thought “That isn’t good!”

My own fault. I bought as a basket case. Guy I bought it from bought it that way too.
I gave it quick once over, just looking, couldn’t see anything obvious, threw head gaskets, cam, timing chain, oil pump. On it, and sealed it up, hoping (hope, is never a good plan) that the bottom end would be OK. Well, it wasn’t.
#6 con rod and wrist pin left the chat.

The engine was a total loss. Crank all beat up. As deep as the gouges are, I’m sure it’s not repairable.
I beat the con rod with a 2 pound sledge. Looked up in the hole in the pan and could see space to move it so it would turn and come out. So, that’s what I did.

I have a line on a 2003 Silverado 3500 that a tree fell on it. Engine runs well, just cab an bed are crushed.
Hopefully, I can pick it up in the next couple of days, and get all my mods and changes done to it, then install it over the weekend.
