I’m going to have several hard to find 8.1 liter parts for sale here in the coming weeks. Most of the stuff on the outside of the long block on this one will NOT be used on my build. I kept everything off my previous engine. Hopefully, it all will transfer straight onto this one.

Installed the new Cloyes Timing chain. A dab of red loctite in the cam gear bolts, just for piece of mind.

Then spent a couple of hours re-tapping almost every threaded hole on the outside of the engine. Just to make sure I didn’t have any trouble mounting anything.
While doing that, I broke out the MAP gas torch and PB Blaster, went to town removing rusted exhaust studs. I got almost every one out in one piece. Only had 1 that broke. It left about 3/8ths inch stub sticking out.
I went to work with the map gas and a pair of vice-grips. It finally gave up and came out too.
Also, had to heat up a threaded in plug on each cylinder head to get them out, so, I could install my temperature sensors, one for the dash gauge, on the right head, and the Coolant Temp Sensor in the left head. I’m glad I did those with the engine out of the truck.
They both put up a good fight.

Installed new Cam and Crank Position Sensors. Just cuz! Then the new fitting for the manual oil gauge. Because a real oil pressure reading makes me happy.

I just found out my new oil pan is delivered at the house. So YAY!

On a lesser note: I have a sneaking suspicion that this engine may have a blown head gasket. I was disposing of the oil I drained out of it. One of the gallon jugs of used oil from it the bottom quart of it was vanilla milkshake. Not a good sign…

I’ve decided to cap off the upper radiator hose outlet, then attach a bicycle inner tube to the water pump outlet, then fill the engine with tap water, then hose clamp the other end of the inner tube to the heater hose outlet.
Then I can inflate the inner tube using the schrader valve, with the oil pan off, I should be able to see any leakage, if any, with the air pressure pushing the water.
We shall see…

My new Silverado 8.1 liter oil pan showed up. Yay.
Got a couple of bicycle inner tubes showing up tomorrow to use as a headgasket leak detection system.
So fawking upset about this!
It better be OK,…like I said earlier ”NOT FAWKING HAPPY!”

Hopefully that was just condensation, or pressure washing intrusion.
I would like to think that’s what it is. Unfortunately, “If it weren’t for shit luck, I’d have none!”
I never thought about it, but, yeah, the engine is pretty clean, so, maybe it is pressure washing intrusion. The oil cap was not on it when I got it, so…

All the spark plugs had a bit of grey ash on them, very uniformly also, I saw that and felt a bit better about it.
All the rod and main bearings look almost new. So, I’m really just waiting on my diagnosis tomorrow for the head gasket.

I’m calling it a win! No blown head gasket.
As you can see by the two halves of the bicycle inner tube, it was working right up until it didn’t. The tube popped! With no water(I have 1.5 gallons in the engine at present.)
It held until the tube popped. No leakage at all. I’m installing this engine.

I pulled out the old Oil pickup tube, then installed the new 8 inch pickup tube.
Getting the old one out and the new one back in was a holy PITA!
I’m assuming that since it went back in so hard, it’s in correctly?! Had to pound it in with a dead blow hammer
The new oil pan wouldn’t even come close to bolting up with the old pick up tube installed.
New oil pan is bolted on.
