OMG, vindication. I AM NOT A TOTAL IDIOT. I'm preparing to reassemble this engine and spun it around a few times. The cam appears to be cut backyards on the timing chain side. I am definitely on the compression stroke, TDC #1, and the cam gear is upside down. Might not be that important to y'all, but I didn't think I was that stupid.
Cut backyards like mowing the lawn?

So I believe that you mean that it is 180* out, backwards could mean something different. I believe that I understand both of you guys. I think that puts me in a DIFFERENT world!

I have heard of timing sets where the dots go both at the top.
Just take your time and verify what you are seeing.
And remember that bent72 likes to mess with all of us!!!!

You shush

Also, family drama (her's, not mine) lead me to only get 1 cylinder head reinstalled. That's it. 17 bolts in 9 hours. What a day.

Hope that gets better, makes for long days for sure

Did you tap the steering box when it was off?

So I'm thinking with a frame pump after the factory solenoid, it won't blow the valve open

So for about 100 bucks for a gasket kit, 100 bucks for a pump, and maybe a 100 bucks on miscellaneous stuff, the other engine goes in... but with no VSS. Or I sell my 205 as it sits and pull another 241 and get a SYE. Which could be a wash, IDK. And I could bed mount the Suburban tank. No longer need a pump but maybe .... ish .... 50 bucks to mount the tank.

You could vss at the speedometer. Otherwise it's best to program it out.

Not sure on cost of the SYE. Might be good route to avoid using a doubler. Not sure if enough gear though.

I mounted my k5 tank in bed, hated it there. Single tank under would my suggestion

Doubler is going to cost me big no matter what. Don't even have one yet...

I am unaware that

Something else to think and research on.

Last I checked, 245 ish +shipping on a 241 SYE.

My 205 has a brand new twinstick + rails, and all new seals, all from ORD. Could be worth 400. Plus the brand new adapter to the 700R4.

I never should have sold the 241 I had with that 'Burb.

Given those parameters, I'd find a 241 and just use the planetary in front of the 205. I think ORD calls that the magnum. Not thinking you will get much of your money back selling the 205, not many break and few people build from scratch with them that aren't already attached to a tranny

@6872xtc , what years speedos are vss at the dash?
There is also an aftermarket vss signal generator.

If you opt to loose the vss, doesn't matter what engine you use then because you have to burn a chip anyway

I believe that the VSS at the speedometer head was '87, '88 and '89.
I have had some people tell me that using VSS helps with fuel and timing since the ECM can tell more of what you are doing with the truck.
But I will tell you that I don't see much wrong with how the '72 K5 is without VSS.

I would go with a Magnum box from ORD. Being able to disengage the front axle in low range can make a difference sometimes.
Northwest Fab has a DIY kit for their box. I hate to point that out since ORD is so good to deal with.
