1986 GMC 3+3 dually build.- cummins swap.. Round 2, 2024 update.

Dr. Steve's transmission clinic in Manchester, NH is where I had mine rebuilt. I believe it was $1500. They did a good job but I'm sure there's someone closer to you that can do it.

That's not awful and a good excuse for a drive up north.

Talking with my brother about this. I am thinking about going to a married transfer case so a rebuild, then 550 dollar AA adapter, a 32 spline np205 and new driveshafts. What is everyones thoughts on married vs divorced transfer case? Do I just rebuild it n stuff it back in or change things up?

The 4x4 transmissions have a much better 5th gear retention than the 2wd do. Its that aftermarket splined collar that slips over the nut.
Just that can get you away from the small 2wd shaft you already broke and then the small input of the 205 which would probably be next.
If it were me where you are, I'd put the diesel output shaft in it and just change the slip yoke.

Looks like my plan is having it rebuilt locally with bigger diesel output and yeah, toss it back in. I got the tcase rebuilt already.

Can't remember your driveshaft setup, but the only downside to a mated case would be having to go back to a 2 piece driveshaft. A buddy of mine had a one piece aluminum shaft made for his swap, but he has an NV5600, which is a little longer, and it cost a pretty penny

Yeah, its a 76inch long steel shaft to the divorced tcase, then a 13inch midshaft to the trans. Ill stick with that, the max length i think even for aluminum is 86 and I think they are over 1000 bucks.

No update on the trans yet, probably bringing it to a shop this week but looks like the motor is coming out as well. I want to re-do my engine cross member/motor mount and a few other things i havent been super happy with since I built this. I figure this is the time to do it so.. "might as well" Its going to be a slow process I hope not too slow, just very planned out time periods of when I can get after it. Ill try to keep you posted with pictures. Thanks all.

Well, been plugging away at it for an hour or so few times a week, trans is just sitting there, waiting on parts then ill bring it to the shop. I have been tearing apart the front clip and just took it off tonight. I ordered up a new engine cross member to put in when I yank the motor. I plan on cleaning up the firewall a little with AC delete box. (trans took all my AC money anyways) so the turbo will have more room when it goes back in. I am going to correct a bunch of little stuff that has bothered me since putting it in 10years ago.

10 years ago after thrashing in a hot driveway for 3months straight some of the stuff I did at the end of the build looks like trash so going to fix that, cross members, brake line things etc.

I took the front clip off alone tonight, was pretty happy with that. Maybe motor will come out in the next day or 2. We shall see! Then lots of pressure washing and scrubbing.

BTW, such a pain to upload pictures on here from the phone then go on the computer to write this up.

transmission shop called to tell me the tailhousing of my nv4500 does not fit the 31spline. Anyone have any clue where the heck I can track down a 2wd tailhousing for a 31spline dodge? seems very tricky to find.

Found a cone, in Cali, and its not cheap but its gotta be part of this game. While I've had a lot of time to think and rebuild/clean grease I am thinking about lowering the truck to a more stockish height with 35's. Right now the truck has old 6 " superlift springs that were under a friends wheeling suburban 15years ago, then 10 under my cummins. What type of springs would you guys recommend for say a 2" lift to drop it down a little but not 1000 dollar customs. Just tossing ideas out there now, its been a while since ive bought springs.

I'm not sure if ORD sells Tuff Country any more (if they do, by all means go through them, I do not want to take any business away from them) but I can get you a quote on a 2" Tuff Country HD setup. What would be new springs front and rear. Let me know.

These are procomp 2.5 springs. I think they are 525 pound springs. Very not bad especially for the cost.

Is that on the crew cab?
I had some stiff 2.5" aftermarket springs on the front of my k5 with the Perkins turbo diesel, at 1200lbs it made the ride decent.
I don't know what engine he has but your Cummins would be the same like my truck.
If this is your k5 then I will shut up. :pimp:

Lol this is my crew cab. I do wheel the 6" procomps on the blazer though.
