1986 K30 - Rapid Learning

Get 'er cleaned up and solid.
Hey Drew, at least if it falls off of the jack it isn't going to hurt anything. All of the brake parts are off and out of the way...

I thought about rolling the nose of the truck, but wasn't sure what it would look like. I suppose I can give it a try. Throw the rear wheels back on, put two floor jacks on the front axle - one on each end, then carefully try rolling it inward so that I can get the axle shaft out. Makes sense in theory just sounds a little sketchy I guess.
Honestly, what's the worst that can happen? If you jack it up just enough to be off the ground and it falls off that jack, you're not doing any worse damage to the bottom of the axle than I've done to mine on the rocks. You might put a chip in the concrete. I would put or keep the bottom king pins on the knuckle. So don't get carried away with removing the one until the truck is moved. You could also remove the grease zirks on the bottom of the lower king pin to make sure if it falls you don't break that off.

Just don't lift the front any higher than it needs to be and don't put your toes under the axle.

Dana 60 vs garage floor? I feel sorry for the floor....
It will be fine. I move my crap with two floor jacks pretty regularly.

Cut a hole in the wall. :haha:

I did this once when I thought I blew the G80 up, swapped in a open carrier and had to leave a axle out. I left the trans in park and jacked the rear up and pushed it. When I sat the truck down on the slipped driveway the truck kept rolling because the shaft was out... :haha:

have you tried turning the steering wheel so it comes out an an angle instead of straight into the wall?

Oh man, I have not... that is a solid idea. I will give that a go before trying the rolling strategy!

You won't gain much, but it might be just enough...

Great progress so far! Way to take advantage of the time off.

for the kingpins, are you planning on doing any upgrades while you’re in there? I’ve been looking into the bronze bushings and springless caps. Curious about your thoughts.

Thank you! I am learning a lot with this thing. Never gotten this deep into an axle before.

I had not thought of upgrading anything with the kingpins. Those upgrades you mentioned (bronze bushings, springless caps), would they be beneficial for my use case? I hadn't planned on wheeling with this thing, just wanted to use it for camping / snowboarding trips. I'll do some reading!

@shima

where’s your casters? Roll the nose of the truck over!

I could come over this weekend and give you a hand if it would help.

That would be awesome Ron!

I am crossing my fingers that I can do the steering wheel thing, which hopefully wouldn't take long... but it would be great to just hang out in general and shoot the breeze. I've got beers in the fridge and about a million questions... ha!

For what I think you have planned for this K30, I would just stick with the stock king pin stuff. I tried the springless setup and I didn't like it much. I do have bronze bushings but that's because I know my truck is going to get knocked around a lot. Those are upgrades to make if you're going to run 40's and a locker, IMO.

i didn’t think the bronze bushings were compatible with the stock spring setup? Or did I read your post wrong?

stockish use you dont need bronze bushing unless you NEVER wana do it again .

and go with stock king pin stuff but spring eliminator kit from CRANE https://craneaxle.com/default/dana-60-king-pin-spring-eliminator.html

i used a set of these in a 60 front with 46" tires and it was perfect and no problems. i tried a shim per side at first but the turning force was WAY to tight for street use . so i ran just the kit no shims.
